So happy for your latest accomplishment! BTW, if you find yourself back in the states and craving this special dish of Eva's, you might try using the chile manzano (aka peron) pepper. You may have to source it from a Mexican grocer, but it might just be a decent substitute for the Calabrian 'pipi' pepper. Buon appetito!

It is considered a very naive perspective to view the restaurant business in a simplistic and idealistic way. While your words hold great value and may uplift the place, it is imperative to recognize that merely serving delicious food and having creative ideas is insufficient. One of the primary reasons for numerous restaurant failures is the lack of strong foundations, diligent management, hard work, and a plethora of sacrifices, all of which are imperative to sustain and nourish the business.

My father was born and grew up in Dasa. He emigrated to Connecticut in the 1950s. As a young man, he painted those statutes that you showed in the video and that they parade around town at Easter. I have a picture of him painting one of them when he was in his teens.

I am not from Calabria. I was born in Naples, quartiere Stella. My family, on my father side, came from a small village in Molise. I know what life is like in such a place. The accent and dialect may be different, but everything else is the same. Thank you for reminding me of home.

This is what success is meant to be used for in my opinion: create a better world. No matter if you do a small or a huge thing, if that thing makes the world a better place it was worth doing it. Thanks for making the world (and my country) a better place Eva and Harper. Grazie di cuore ❤

Your story is so wholesome I'm MOVED. As an italian, a Southener, a small (not as small as Dasa, but anyway) city dweller, what you're doing is incredible. This is what social media should be able to bring if well used: two guys following their passion and sharing with a public, while helping a community develop. I am an Italian chef originally from the Bronx and have been in Tucson since 1966. I had a pizza store in the Bronx and was taught by my grandma (from Modena ) and my mother and aunts, I took classes in culinary and worked with Greek chefs (one my brother in law) and still love to cook. I volunteer to cook for large groups like the 4-H horse camps and the boy scout camps on Mt Lemmon here in Tucson. I saw your video and just loved it! I am going to Greece, Italy and France July 1st. I lived with my family in Milan in the 60's ( my cousin is Massimo D'Alema) I subscribed and look forward to learning many recipies. Your "restaurant looks like my families Sunday dinners and warmed my heart. Thanks.

Let's see if these people make it past a year. There's nothing special about what they are doing relative to what people are already making in that town. The only novelty seems to be that an American owns it, which sucks in itself. I hope these neg posts make these people do the right thing and not be a way to make $$$ and to generate shitty YT content. I hope you got you thinking, Harper.

It's great that you guys are giving back to the community something they actually desire, while respecting their way of life.

Maybe you two lost your minds, but only because the spirit rules you! So nice you do things like this! Keeps the community together and thriving.

The townsfolk are what make it. For sure. This is what most of humanity has lost and forgotten. How many people can say they even know one or two of their neighbors? How many can say they have get togethers and all cook, eat and have a great time together? Very very few. If I personally could live in a community like this, I would and leave my hometown in a heartbeat. What a great community. Thank you for sharing!

How lovely to watch this / at a time when there is so much fighting among people in general, so much disagreement - it is absolutely heart warming to see the spirit of this local community, the people, the sheer joy and appreciation for just the best and most simple food // made my day! True. But I see Dasà as the perfect place to picnic while reading or knitting or both (Audible). I’m not much of a people person, and dancing and singing get in the way of thinking and writing. Each to their own. But OMG, those humongous bowls of pasta!!! That beautiful restaurant - La Locanda? I didn’t catch the name, I was too busy drooling!

Ok this video made me cry. I visited Italy last year for the first time and fell IN LOVE with Italy and the people. When I got back (I live in Seattle) I started binge watching KZread videos on Italy and italian food. Thats when I found your channel I love Ava. She's spunky and smart and is an amazing cook!! And you help show us all the beautiful things about her including her hometown. Im so excited for your new adventure. It seems like the perfect place. I just got back from Itay a couple weeks ago. I plan to go every year and hopefully discover this town too!! Thanks for sharing Italy and the Italian people with us!

this made me tear up. im 48 years old. my grandfather is sicilian, from le cerra friddi. as a kid his cousins would visit usa, bklyn nyc. always tell my grandfather to come back and visit. he couldnt he was sick. so the invite was alwys to my mother, myself and others. i havent been there since i was 11 i think. exactly as you said. the small village, the olive trees, the air, the food. id love to go again one day.

I'm a 1st generation American. Both my parents are from the same village in Calabria, not far from Dasa. Calabria is absolutely beautiful. I try to go to Italy every couple years, but haven't been back to Calabria in a while. Hopefully next summer. Unfortunately, many of the small villages of Calabria are dying.

Imagine a plate of simple pasta with red sauce costing the equivalent of $20 USD in that town. THAT would be something to cry about. The townsfolk prolly can't afford that. Does this guy even know about health care and retirement savings for his employees? I doubt it. If you're serious about taking care of the people in that town, YOU MAKE IT INTO A CO-OP so that people who work there have a stake in it. That way, your restaurant can continue to operate instead of employees shitting on it when the American goes away.

This story nearly brought me to tears. It's everything that I think is most important -- food & community, and the transformation that happens at the intersection of them. Bless this endeavor!

I grew up in an italian American town in California. Wow that Resturant will be worth the drive. Once the locals pull put the instruments and start singing and dancing it's the most fun atmosphere you can have. Great food, freindly people, and a great time. BRAVO!

This is the coolest idea ever! More small communities worldwide could use this approach to rebuild the true sense of "Community". God bless all of you!!!!

I was happy too as a North African (Libyan) but for a different reason which was how close we are as humans. I noticed that some of the players were using Arabic musical instruments, probably because it's close to Sicily.

What an amazing thing you two have done! Many happy times ahead for you and the town you are helping. This video was very special. Congratulations.

I think that I have only once shared one of your videos with my friends, given the short attention span of people on social media, but I am going to share this. It is so cool that you took an old, abandoned restaurant and turned it essentially into a community center, and one that the community is using to spread their cooking and to bring money into the community.

Where you are is the real Italy, not the tourist traps. When I visit a place the best part is experiencing the culture there, learning the customs, eating the food, learn who the people are or were in ancient times. You guys did good! This is an awesome thing! I'd visit Italy again just to eat there!

What an evolution has this channel undergone. I remember the first video I've seen on this channel (grocery shopping during the pandemic) when you "only" had a few thousands of subscribers. I'm astonished what you achieved. Be proud of yourselves!!!!!

Eva Harper and my fellow grammarians. This spontaneous, cooperative, happy kind of 'destino' is the kind of thing that I just love to see and which often happens to me. When I was first contemplating retirement at the old age of 33, I was planning where to move etc but ultimately it all just fell into my lap and I hurried off to live in Mexico. I'm relatively new to Pasta Grammar but so pleased to have stumbled across your content. I'm first generation Italian-American and have had the pleasure of enjoying the hospitality of relatives in Puglia and Abruzzo. My roots in Italy are similar to Eva's....small towns where everyone knows everyone else's business. The warmth of the culture is lost, I think, today so I am more than pleased to see you Harper find value in it and to see Eva 'marinate' in the heritage of her hometown.....and YES! Food tastes better in Italy!

I think Regione Calabria should thank you and give you some kind of recognition for your work. It's a shame that they don't give a damn about this stuff. And I see it too with other content creators that try to bring attention to a wonderful, but abandoned region. For them, tourism in Calabria is only two months a year (july and august) and only on the beaches, and without a proper tourism board or even social media communications. THIS was by FAR the best video I have ever seen on this channel!!!!! BOTH of you look different. I've never seen Eva look so content and at peace.

You guys made what was Previouslys an abandoned restaurant, a building just waiting for the right time to come into relevance again into a Cultural heritage center that is bound to bring new life to the quiet town of Dasa. Its beautiful how so many people were able to contribute into making the place the way it is, not only will it act as a new place for gatherings and celebrations, but a place for learning about the intricate culture Dasa has always had but was never able to properly show. The Village Mill project is something i am greatly looking forward to seeing especially since it is literally centuries old and the people who have onced worked there is still alive, feels like a memorable videogame sidequest almost!

Excellent video guys - Harper I sincerely hope you apply for Italian citizenship because you and Eva seem to have become pillars of the local community!

My first Italian ride was all the way through Calabria. Of course I went through Rome, Naples and through Sicily and Sardinia. It was Calabria that most touched my heart. Calabria is not only the heart of Italy, it’s probably the heart of Europe. What you’re doing in Eva’s hometown is lovely. I hope more Calabrians return home and bringing back joy and vitality.

This is such a nice idea, and its these kind of things that can hopefully save and preserve towns like this in Southern Italy, that is turning into ghost towns. I do not know the story of Dasà in particular, but there are a lot of towns around that sadly are not as lucky, and with each generation its less and less people left as people don't have jobs there. So things like this + also hopefully more remote work could bring more life into those towns in Italy, and well also in other countries suffering from the same like Spain.

I have travelled a lot in Italy and Sicily. Some time ago I rented a small car and drove solo and serendipity throughout Calabria Puglia and Abruzzo and fell in love with the people landscape and of course the food. I lived 10 years in France and dreamed of doing what you are doing but in the south of France where many villages are in decline. I think its great to find a way to infuse youthful energy into Evas natal village. Calabrians are super cool people in my book!

I love this! It's such a wonderful concept/project/location that exemplifies community spirit in a way that many of us have never even imagined. In the U.S. possibly the Amish communities were similar in the sharing spirit, but that's not the standard perspective in most communities, at least in the western world. The 20th & 21st centuries have left that behind without looking back and that's somewhat culturally tragic. You both have created a unique and lovely new tradition. Everything old is new again! ❤

Absolutely love your (both of you) channel. I'm retired Navy and was stationed in Italy for almost 5 years. My wife and I chose to live in the community as opposed to living in the military housing. We have amazing memories of the people, the food, and the customs. You and your bride are truly blessed to be able to contribute to that amazing tapestry. I vividly remember the first Pasta Grammar episode we watched right after it started and, being from Maine, thinking "...what did this poor woman get herself into?!?!" and how it's evolved into one of my favorite channels with 2 of my favorite people who I'll finally get to meet in person in a few months. You've done Dasa proud and we can't wait to experience it! I'm also hoping Eva will have forgiven me for the, I think, quite original use of Quale in our Italian class... Brillant project and so right for Dasa! I think several small towns and villages around the World need projects like this to make their communities stronger. You've set a very good example.

I love this so much ! You two are amazing and the way you chose to give back to the community and everyone participation brings tears to my eyes . Its so good to see how such things are possible in other countries ...here in California the health department will stand in the way of anything that actually benefits the community ...i know , I have been a cafe owner in very rural california . I can't believe I could love you two more. I'm from Sinopoli, Reggio Calabria. Dasa is 2.3 km from Acquaro. Used to walk there with my Nonni to their properties. Moved to Canada as a little girl. Never forgot my Roots. Still have tons of family, a hop skip, and a jump from Eva's hometown. We almost speak the same dialect. As I will never be fortunate enough to travel to Italy, I have found this channel to be so much more than a 'cooking' channel. Informative and a fascinating view into a beautiful culture. Oddly enough, this particular video made me feel very connected somehow, and for that I thank you.
