Bread pudding is slightly dried bread cubes mixed into and baked in vanilla egg custard pudding. So the bread soaks up the pudding before it sets up firm. Some people like it with maple syrup and it tastes just like French toast! I like it with cinnamon. The customary topping is lemon curd, much like the lemon stuff inside a lemon pie. Thomas Jefferson going to Europe and realizing macaroni was a masterpiece that everyone had to try it back home is why I'm glad we live in this timeline. That alone was a hero move. People think of Jefferson as being a farmer since he would go on about how farming was the best and most important job anyone could have... but he was in fact quite uninterested in his own farm. What he was really fascinated by was the cuisine, what you could make from a farm's produce. He brought back more than macaroni and cheese from Europe, he also helped popularize ice cream and French fries. He was also one of the first Americans to spread the use of tomatoes, rutabaga, sesame oil, lima beans, okra, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and eggplant (among others), which were either rare or unheard of at the time Jefferson started planting them at Monticello.

There’s something so charming about hearing each president’s favorite foods. While I believe that public officials should be held at the highest level of scrutiny, I can’t help but think it’s so cute that Jefferson ate Mac n Cheese. Or when Biden said “I just love Ice Cream.” It’s so real and affirming that yes these are people! Of course we should still criticize our former and current heads of state, but just for a for moment, let’s all just appreciate this video for how it humanizes these figures in a way I’ve never seen explored before. Pizza with stuffed crust and Mac and cheese. I do love cabbage, broccoli is alright, carrots, apples, pears, blue berries and some other fruits and vegetables but, pineapple is good but, I don't like it on pizza. I mostly enjoy very flavorful ethnic soups and stews from around the world, though (such as Pho, Caldo de Res, Irish lamb stew, Thai coconut curry chicken soup with lemongrass, and so forth). I doubt that was what Millard Fillmore went for, however, if those sorts of recipes were even available and the ingredients accessible. (I would wager that such a wide variety of gourmet spices were harder to source and much more costly for Americans than they are today.)

As a big Garfield fan, I must defend the choice of squirrel. As stated, he couldn't really eat a lot of rich, fatty cooked foods. Actually one of the causes of his infections getting so bad was his doctors forcing him to eat food like bacon, which he threw up (and losing everything else he ate). So a lean meat like squirrel makes a lot of sense for this dietary condition! On top of that, he grew up poor on the frontier, where game was a more popular food choice.

Blanc mange is vanilla pudding. Hoppin' John is a southern thing and MUST be eaten every New Years for good luck. Blackeyed peas are simmered with smoked meat: bacon, ham, sausage, or all three, cut into small bite sized pieces. Most people added chopped onion and bell pepper, garlic and salt--with all that smoked meat you don't need much, and pepper. In Texas jalapenos, finely minced are added. Simmer until the peas are very soft, which doesn't take long, especially since fresh, not dried, peas are preferred. Serve over white rice topped with a spicy sauce of your choosing. Homemade or Tabasco are popular. Good stuff!

Once while doing a TV spot, Jill Biden introduced something to do with ice cream on that I actually used when hosting a Christmas dinner - we did a sundae bar for dessert but instead of having guests scoop their ice cream from the container, which is messy and takes forever, we used Jill’s technique: the day before, pre-scoop the ice cream and wrap individual scoops in plastic wrap. Then just before serving, unwrap each scoop and put them into a serving bowl (I chilled the bowl first to prevent early melting). Guests simply have to take a scoop or two from the serving bowl with tongs for an instant sundae. It worked out well.

I think it might have something to do with campaigning on the road. You have to have something you can stuff into your face quickly between stops on the campaign bus. I'm not sure that can explain Trump's penchant for chicken and burgers though, seeing as he was mostly on his own private jet.

Thanks to Jefferson for Mac n Cheese and Madison (well his wife, actually) for ice cream. I guess Coolidge’s food fusions were the precursor to Shaggy Rogers’ sandwiches. I can respect Cleveland for loving herring. I myself am one of the few in my family that loves nearly all kinds of seafood. Same for all the other presidents that loved seafood, I salute that. Not gonna lie: That six-course and dessert dinner for Teddy sounds really good. I agree with Truman… meatloaf is great as long as it doesn’t have onion. Obama has my respect for choosing the higher quality burgers. Side note: My late great-aunt used to eat… squirrel brains. You heard that right… the brain of a squirrel. Her parents and sister ate squirrel before I was born, but only she went that far. But I have known people who ate squirrel, not weird at all. Overall, while I may disagree with the actions of most presidents, I CAN appreciate their food choices.

Sorry dear, we need to make a bit of a correction, actually rather major correction, about your description of spoonbread..Spoonbread is not at all like a bread pudding. A bread pudding is basically bread soaked and baked in custard, and is a lovely sweet dessert. Often served with the addition of a Whiskey or Rum Sauce. Spoonbread, on the other hand, is basically a cornmeal souffle, lots of beaten eggs and milk, perhaps a bit of cheese, which would be an unsweetened side dish. Both lovely dishes, but nothing even remotely similar.
