Btw Suburbia Overture has more motifs. The very start has the I/me/myself "do-wop ba do-wop ba". In the "Home is where the heart is you ain't homeless but you're heartless" part the cord progression is the same as in "memento mori" and "Well, better than the alternative...". Lastly, i remember something involving Marsha at the very start of Merybell, but i'm not sure. And "Suburbia" is mentioned in the unreleased song "I will never amount to anything".

Some fun facts from someone who has been tracking down and keeping a personal archive of a lot of Will's music. The main melody of "The Main Character" is in a lot of Will's live only songs/early versions of songs that were only on pateron! Also the "the future must know where you've been..." lyric and many other melodies and lyrics from self-ish are lifted from older songs that were released(as you might have suspected) under the william sunshine name. If I remember I might come update this comment to be better when its not 11:50.

In Against the Kitchen Floor there's a moment after the first chorus that always reminds me of the beginning of I/Me/Myself with how it does the kinda doo-wop but with a small trumpet section instead Also, that Skeleton Appreciation Day / Chemical Overreaction bit is done really well when listening to the live versions off of The Real Will Wood, especially with how they transition into eachother

And "Suburbia" is mentioned in the unreleased song "I will never amount to anything".

my absolute favorite leitmotif in will's songs are the floorboards one from misanthropologist and 2econd 2ight 2eer. firstly i love that it's a reference to "tell tale heart" which is my favorite edgar allen poem story but also those lines happen to be my favorite parts of their respective songs. musically and lyrically they are such beautiful lines
I'm not sure anybody else has pointed this one out but in memento mori, the part that says "well one day you'll be not even a faint memory" until "Your legacy's not yours to see nor is your eulogy and you'll never know what it all means" you can literally perfectly sing front street's chorus
I love a well Will Wood connects the songs in an album. It’s one of the reasons I’m such a big fan of him
Im pretty sure suburbia has references to all the other songs on tna, which is probably fairly known but its honestly so cool and makes it the perfect 'overture' and the first song on the record
there’s also a bit of ‘self-‘/‘-ish’ in the love me normally music video :D
The arpeggio in the middle of The Song With Five Names (right before the Hebrew) is the exact same as the one at the beginning of 2econd 2ight 2eer and is similar to the "everybody's all up in my business" part in Suburbia... and i swear I've heard it in more songs

Will seems to like doing a lot of chord buildups in his music which is something I've noticed! Its also in the instrumental of Cotard's Solution, Dr.Sunshine is Dead(the "Till my fears come to fruition I’m not scared" lyric), and also the backing vocals during Red Moon. There's absolutey more than just that, but those are a few that I can remember off the top of my head without going through his entire discography lmao. I've listened to so much of his music and I absolutely love finding and identifying patterns in music. :D

In the desc he says that its not a leitmotif but just a similar chromatic walkdown, honestly Id disagree though, it seems out of place in vampire reference (not in a bad way) and its used a lot in 6up 5oh, plus the same album has callbacks to older albums so I don't see why this wouldn't be one.

If I remember I might come update this comment to be better when its not 11:50.

yes!! “I’ll never amount to anything” has a piano solo that went into the main character, and there’s a cover of puttin’ on the ritz that will did that I’m pretty sure has parts of 6up 5oh in its instrumental
I love the little transition between two of them at 3:50
damn, suddenly I wanna hear the full 12 hours of the discography of will wood on shuffle to laugh and cry at the same time! thanks a lot!
Also there's the little kazoo part that plays during: -6up 5oh when he's saying those random words during the instrumental, the "da da da da da daa oh wooh wooh" thing -Dr Sunshine is dead during the start, it's the same rythm but in a bass not a kazoo, and then with a kazoo when he says "If we could see each other then there's no more use for hiding..." -Laplace's angel when he says "It doesn't take a killer to murder, it only takes a reason to kill"
i love leitmotifs
idk if anyone has pointed this out already but from the normal album documentary: the background during the talking part of blackboxwarrior is a distorted audio of will whistling the melody to vampire culture! two cross references to the same two songs
In my opinion, "hold my hands, we'll dance on the 12-step on my grave" (vampire reference) sounds a lot like it but oH wElL i gUeSs nOt (that's meant to be passive aggressive in a joking way) also will wood has at least two maybe three vampire songs? hello? oh and the reason I love the SELF-iSH album so much is because there are callbacks everywhere to different songs and its just...woah

there's threee afaik vampire reference, vampire culture, yes to err is human
Another one I found is the melody after the final chorus of Vampire Culture sounds like the melody after the opening of Outliars and Hyppocrates It's amazing how many songs from TNA that Suburbia Overture references Also, there’s this one small chord pattern that plays in Marsha, Thankk You’s solo that weirdly resembles a part of I / Me / Myself’s solo

It _IS_ an overture, is it not?
i feel like this is intentional tbh like hell, SELFiSH and The Normal Album have this in SPADES, it ltierally connects the whole album together, it makes sense In Case i Make It and In Case i Die also share motifs, they sort orlf ar elike... retrospectives? of eberything so far in a way
Also the beginning of Cotard’s Solution (Anatta, Dukkha, Anicca) sounds like the near end of Mr. Sunshine is Dead.
Could be overthinking but Welcome to CH&T Evening Announcements sounds like the beginning of The Song With 5 Names
Okay the Tomcat Disposables and Willard! one hit me like a fucking truck

@@via3600 Ukulele sounds so fun!!! I have trouble with my wrists when I play guitar, although that might be down to how I'm holding it and also might be something I can practice out; I would much prefer a smaller instrument that I can just have fun on and jam with though. I think I saw one at Music&Arts for $100, might go get one 👍
I played a bunch of songs from in case I make it on my guitar cause I was bored today, right after the other, and holy shit they are SO similar. theres a BUNCH of this: emmaj7 to em7 to em6, and a BUNCH of: g to gmaj7 to g7
Fun? Fact! 8:33 is a reference to the tell-tale heart, a short story by Edgar Allen Poe
I love this kind of stuff in songs, for example in Hamilton or Crazy Ex-Girlfriend or in Will Wood songs and I JUST FOUND IT ACTUALLY HAS A NAME THAT'S SO COOL, I was calling it something like lyrics/melody recycling ahah
you missed 2012, Cotard's Solution, and Dr. Sunshine sharing a similar chord progression!! the intro to 2012, and the "if dreams can come true..." part for the latter two, all start with Ab to Bb then diverge off into different progressions. it may seem like just two chords but its definitely intentional
In Outliers and hippocrates Will makes a reference in the verse "Too weird to love, too scared to die, too alien to take you home" to a song by A Verbal Equinox (a band he was in before he created Will Wood and the Tapeworms) called "He'll use me for his needle show" with the verse "I'm far too wierd to life, but ain't too rare to die, take a good hard look, you can see it in my bloodshot eyes" Curiously, Dr. Sunshine himself sings this song
I think the end of Cicada Days matches the beginning of Falling Up (And I think think Rumba of Death has a saxophone part that's the same as Laplace's Angel) sory leitmotifs are so cool
I think "Jimmy Mushroom's Last Drink" is also referenced in "Half-Decade Hangover" in these lines: Turns out anyone can eat out the trash Then wake up on the freeway mid-crash
4:17 is such a drastic change lol i love both albums tho
I feel like some of these are more of references than leitmotifs
Mr. Fregoli also has another leitmotif from one of Will's older songs, Nuburbatize
IS THAT A WILL WOOD REFERENCE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The “where do you get off” part is a bit of a stretch since it’s just a phrase
i once saw a live performance where will did 2012 and destroy to enjoy in the same song
6up 5oh copout chromatic thingy and the background vocals at the end of song w 5 names are pretty similar
it's funny how some of these songs later had transitions in the live album.
is it just me or does 0:50 onwards in 'good morning, campers!' from ch&t sound like willard? i swear theyre the same melody at times
WAIT, SELF- AND -ISH ARE RELATED?!?!?!
I'm so glad i found this video! just yesterday i was talking about these with my friend bc i find the musical similarities in songs really interesting and i noticed how much Will Wood does it. thank you so much for compiling all of these together!!!!!!
