Every jazz reference in "Game Night" on Tim Robinson's "I Think You Should Leave"

I think part of the brilliance of the sketch is that the condescending elitism of Howie’s character is convincing enough that people who are jazz fans can have a response like yours: we actually feel like we’re too “meat and potatoes,” and have been missing out on the obscure gems! The names are (for the most part) believable enough that even a hardcore fan has to wonder!

This is really great! My interpretation of the trumpet player with the freak lips was Dizzy Gillespie because of the way his cheeks puffed out when he played. Also, he played on a trumpet with the bell pointed upward because once he dropped his trumpet, it bent like that and he liked the look, so that might be the inspiration for the alto sax with a kink in it as well, but that ones more of a stretch

The alto with the kink in it is a reference to Dizzy’s modified trumpet. And Shorterly is a portmanteau or Wayne Shorter and Cannonball Adderley who both played in Miles’ band at different times. The freak lips could be Dizzy or Louie Armstrong, as both had crazy and famous mouths/cheeks, but not necessarily lips.

The man with the freak lips who can hit the high C's all night is more than likely Maynard Ferguson. He was notorious for playing the triple c on a trumpet and he could hang the trumpet from two strings on his ceiling, step up to it and play the triple c without using his hands (bad technique involved pressing the trumpet into your lips to force your armature to stretch, but he could pull it off the correct way.)

Tim Heidecker is an enthusiastic consumer of books (and documentaries) on music/pop culture history, and Robinson is also passionate about older stuff as well, especially that of Detroit, so this was a perfect match. But this is also a very accurate dig at "up-and-coming" (at best) GenX/Millennial comedians/nerdwriters in LA/NY who've stayed past the "sell-by" date for a proper career, got well into their '30s and staked a social claim in their "church of whichever Improv group" and tend to spend their days and nights hogging up space at their "Terribly Important" little "Algonquin Roundtables" at their local, or even huddled together in a corner at a private party they've been invited to, where they can't even genuinely engage with the host or anyone else there, trying to outdo each other with the Most Obscure Reference Ever. Not naming names, but It's really a bummer to witness in real time, and I've seen far too much of it. They did me proud-nailed it to the wall.

The Two Tims are my favourite comedians, but the whole gang, all the Erics, Dougpound and the poundhouse crew, Saul Goodman, Tobias Fünke, Greg Turkington (kind of a greghead, myself, but DEKKAR had some great hits), Neil Berger, Vic Hamburger, RIP Dick Dunn, Ron Auster and the beefhouse boys, hell, even those pesky birthday boys! Their jokes really bring tears to my eyes. Tears of joy, tears of absolute insanity, tears of pain mostly, because for some reason I have to make a bowel movement, every time I sit down at 6:00 pm for the Colgate Comedy Hour but I don't like missing a single moment of it, so I sit on it. By the time I get a chance to grace the bathroom with my godly presence, the feces has been resorbed into my body and into my bloodstream. It's a real problem and I should probably see a doctor about it but my priest told me I shouldn't listen to doctors or scientists of any kind and buy this miracle cure from him in his office in the back of the church there at like 30 bucks a box which is like 2 litres of miracle cure. I mean I could turn around and sell it on the street for double or triple the profit I got friends I know a couple guys who could move this stuff like it's bacon pancakes during a breakfast shortage. If you're interested in loaning me the 30 bucks we could get this stuff off the ground in no time. I'd be willing to go 60/40 on this, pal, now thats just plain old classic American value that you can't get outside of the walls of this beautiful country.

I feel like "the guy with the freak lips who can hit the high C all night long" is a reference to Maynard Ferguson. I also feel the "Alto sax with a kink to it," is referring to Dizzy Gillespie's curved bell trumpet.
