This is a great video and as a Chinese I didn't realize how helpful this would be and how hard it is for westerners to get the background knowledge. Since Journey To The West is a well known story for almost every kids in China. Here are something I think worth sharing: 2:21 孫 is Goku and Gohan's familiy name, "Son" is a transliteration, BTW it means Grandson in Chinese, and it is also a common family name. Goku's family name It was originally comes From Journey To The West, where the Monkey-King given the family name by his first Sensei, 猢猻 is a kind of monkey. 12:56 Chiaotzu is not based on vampires, but Chinese zombies 13:17 Just some background adding for Ox-King. In Journey To The West, Ox-King and Monkey-King (孫悟空, whom Goku was based on) were sworn brothers before the monkey was punished by the Buddha. When the monkey became a monk 500 years later, they put on a fight for the Monkey tricking Ox-Queen for the Bansho Fan, which is used to put off the fire at Fire Mountain. The pig (whom Oolong was based on) is also part of that fight. 16:38 天 has nothing to do with he can fly. Tien Shinhan 天津飯 is a Japanese-Chinese food, where 天津 is a city/port in china bordering Beijing and 飯 literally means food/meal/rice, the same as Gohan's name. His third eye also based a Character in Journey To The West, Er Lang Shen Unrelated, Master Roshi(武天老師 むてんろうし Muten Roshi) is a bad translation IMO, since Roshi is the transliteration of 老師 which means teacher/Sensei. Master Muten is more appropriate. Also Kamehameha is the family name of the first ruler of the Kingdom of Hawaii, Toriyama's wife suggested this name when he was trying to accommodate "Kame" into this name of this technique. That happens to be Turtle Destruction Wave in Japanese

The real reason Super has Goku wearing that Whis symbol is because it’s easier and therefor cheaper to animate.

FT Deleted He and Vegeta also had their new outfits during the Universe 6 vs. 7 tournament. Unfortunately they were put back in their traditional outfits from the Goku Black arc forward, which is a shame imo.

Darrell Gardner GT has a giant fish monster who terrorizes a village with earthquakes only trying to get a virgin to be his bride and they find out he really only predicts the earthquakes he doesnt cause them. Kid Goku had a Kanji character on his gi before he met Master Roshi, that was given to him by Grandpa Gohan. That was literally the first Kanji that was ever shown.

Master Roshi's symbol is still the best. It's just iconic.

Any Dragon Ball kanji makes Goku to be such an anime icon to Japan and outside of the country

Good job you guys actually made a dragonball video that you didn't get wrong

You neglect to mention one very important aspect of these kanji. When they wear, is also important. For example the Z fighters wear certain kanji to represent their teacher. Goku wears the turtle symbol after he trains with Roshi. He then wears King Kai’s symbol next because King Kai was his next teacher. Who was Goku’s next teacher? Well it was Goku in 100 times normal gravity. Thus he wears the Goku symbol next while on Namek. As you mention Gohan wears Piccolos symbol. And later in the series Goku and Vegetable wear Whis’s symbol next so... there you have it. Most of the symbol represent who they are in the show and they also represent a badge of respect representing their teachers. Which is pretty cool!

Don’t forget the new Galactic Patrol symbol from the new arc.

1:40: "Go" byitself means satori, or "to realise". It is a verb. 2:20: "Son" by itself, means grandchild. It is referring solely to Goku's surname.

The 'go' in Goku's name reads satori or satoru, means to realise, but on a spiritual level. Which translate to Enlightment. Thats why when Goku first carry this symbol he could read Krillins mind without know how he learn that. And how he could dodge the the Ginyu Force without appear to be movin at all. First signs of Ultra Instinct, back on Namek.

4:39 That's not his kanji, or a kanji at all... It's hiragana for the sound "pi", which I'm guessing is a reference to his own name... like Bulma.

mercinari towel was such a badass he litterly flicked his sandle up in the air to slap a bullet away and proceeded to walk forward into his sandle and continue walking.

goku doesn't really seem to care what clothes he wears as long as they have good freedom of movement. there is a long established precedent throughout dragon ball of goku wearing out his clothes and his friends treating him to new ones. he'd probably wear anything he could fight in no matter what it said on it.

I bought a piccolo "doll" figure, cloth clothing. Back in 1998 1999 @ EB games people returned everyone i did too, i remember the clerks joking saying "we gotta get some senzus" lmfao! The dolls legs where ALWAYS broken. They retailed 20.00 and about 10inch tall. Irwin toys.

It's cool to know these things.

I think it makes more sense for the comfort/ease kanji, on Yamcha, to symbolize his goal of wanting to be comfortable around girls. It would also be a reference, and play on words, to his “cool-guy” attitude.

I found out about the kanji being a pun on sun wu kong cz i took a Goku jersey to work n she asked if i knew the story n shhe told me the story since it was from their childhood. Sounds waayyyyy coooler in person!!! Made love for the series!!

7:07 might have a double meaning as a reference to Hawaiian King Kamehameha.

Picculo's kanji is my favorite. I could really go for specialized merch, or at least a cap.

Which is weird, considering it's expected for Pilaf's name to be written in katakana instead. Toriyama puns or just style, I guess. (Although ピ looks kinda cool too)

Also I wish he brought back the orange and blue gi but the blue under shirt and the shoes with the wrist bands were weights

So that's why King Kai was smiling at the back of Goku's GI Top! That was his symbol and he secretly gave Goku a new one since he trained under him and Became one of his Finest students also. Man, What an Honor! Also for Beerus on DB Super, I've never seen him "Breakdance!" Breakdancing is Wayyyy Past Cool, and Sonic the Hedgehog can do this. Apparently, myself being a Mobian Badger from Sonic Boom, my Mobian form can breakdance. But my human form really can't. I'm too heavyset, and I'd probably Break my own neck doing that. Mobians were always Professionals at breakdancing Because they have very low Bodily Weight, and they're very small people.

7:05 except it's not exactly the case. Toriyama himself said that Kamehameha was not a Japanese pun/phrase or something, it's just a reference directly to the Hawaiian king Kamehameha. Not to mention that, Master Roshi himself often wears Hawaiian shirt and his island resembles one of Hawaiian islands.

I always wondered why Goku never had a symbol on his Gi in the Cell and buu saga. The symbols he wore were always like a representation of his character and it bothered me to see it gone. Glad they brought it back in Super.

I like Tien Symbol it goes with his personality besides piccalo time shows character growth and the wisdom to go on and share the wisdom he has learned.

You can find other Kanji Characters in the dragonball games. such as 怒, 必, 惑, 造. 怒 usually associated with Chichi because it means rage. 必 - usually associated with characters using special abilities like Kamehameha, can mean "hisatsu waza" or "Deadly technique". 惑 - usually associated with freeza and his men because they are space pirates, so likely the character has a meaning of "space". 造 - means build so it is associated with the Androids.

The word Pilaf in Albanian actually means rice dish. Thank you Akira for paying tribute.
