    I really like this from genius: "In the midwest, the subject of the song, winters are particularly dreary. To say the “cloud coverage matched [the narrator’s] outfit” draws a similarity between his clothing and the weather. The “cloud coverage” is dark and gloomy, and so he is dressed similarly: dark and gloomy. “To a knife” is similar to a more commonly used phrase, “to a T” which describes two things nearly identical. The word “knife” may be used as opposed to the more common idiom to add a darker edge to the line, which would circle back well to the reference of “cloud coverage”.

    Oldies station is just too good lyrically. It's about getting older and more mature but I also think it could be an ode to his late grandma mentioned in navigating. Tyler reflects on how he learned from his elders on how to prioritize what matters in new seasons.

    Yeah, Tyler said in the livestream that this song is kind of an update for the fans on how he's doing. So he's describing in third person the struggles and breakthroughs he's had since we last heard from him. In that context, the line "You've got it down, that old fight for survival" makes me feel very proud of him. Also "you're in the crowd at her first dance recital" talking about his daughter is just adorable 🥰.

    I can't help but wonder if the Vignette line is a call back to Heavydirtysoul. "Its a tribute to zombies, of which I've become. Where do I go from here!?" "Mindless zombies walking around with a limp and a hunch, saying stuff like 'you only live once'." Feels like maybe he's recognizing that he's allowed himself to become a mindless zombie and he wants to get freed from that way of thinking/living.

    I always interpreted Midwest Indigo as describing depression. It's a sadness that is deeper than "having the blues", and a color deeper than blue is indigo. He is describing difficulties that living in the Midwest brings, such as frost on windshields or counselors canceling. In my experience, doctors, therapists, and other medical specialists are very busy because it's not like big metropolises where there are dozens of options in every field, so if you are, for example, late to an appointment, they might cancel on you and not let you have your appointment in order to accommodate the dozens of other tightly scheduled appointments. He has a sadness that is deeper than Midwest Blues, thus Midwest Indigo.

    Next Semester and Midwest Indigo are two of my absolute favorites, too. As a Midwesterner myself, Midwest Indigo hits me right in the heartstrings; I love how the color of a dreary winter sky is equated to feeling "blue", and the cold winter temperatures compared to coldness in a relationship that's gone sour. Next Semester gets me choked up with how powerful the message is, of reaching absolute rock bottom, but deciding to keep fighting anyway. And they're both absolute bangers to boot! Navigating would probably be in my top 3, as well, as I can feel the bass and drums, as well as the thought that "Everybody leaves" deep in my soul. Wanting the people you love to stay so badly, but ending up pushing them away as you get lost in the tide of your struggles. The whole album is an absolute masterpiece, but let's be real: TOP never misses!

Frankly, the fact that people go out of their way to rag on Ohio proves it is more memorable than places like...Indiana. When was the last time someone thought to make fun of Indiana? (Sorry neighbors) Tyler is wise to stay in Columbus, and Josh decided to move back from California. Columbus is a pretty good city, one of the few Ohio cities to grow in population and economy, has 10+ colleges and universities, holds the national headquarters of multiple companies, and most of all, the people are nice and respectful as a whole. It's not a flashy city and is certainly not utopia, but is a good place to live and to raise a family especially.

    I'm going to rank including both "The Craving"s: 14. The Craving (Jenna's Version) | 81 | This is a great song as well, but after hearing the single version first, the simplicity of this song is just too simple for me. 13. Snap Back | 85 | I love every song on this album. This ranking is incredibly different because I feel like Tyler and Josh (and Paul) did a great job at making every song different. Sometimes I'm just not in the mood for how slow-paced this song feels. 12. Backslide | 86 | This ranks above Snap Back simply from the "I don't mind if it's lonely, I don't mind if it's fair" refrain that's so dang catchy. 11. Lavish | 88 | So freaking catchy. Fun song. I love the satirical bite. Just not as emotionally satisfying as the next 9. 10. At The Risk Of Feeling Dumb | 89 | Yes, the clown instrument part makes sense as a complaint. The last minute or so of this song makes up for a lot of it. I also felt like this was the most blatant callback to Blurryface in terms of sound, because it has a little bit of that Reggae feel. 9. Vignette | 90 | The falsetto takes a little bit to get used to, and it sounds like Bittersweet Symphony in the beginning. 8. Routines In The Night | 93 | Just a banger. So much fun in the car. The rest of the songs just have such an emotional punch that set them above. 7. Overcompensate | 94 | I remember when this came out and it was ALL WE HAD from Clancy. How much I had this on repeat. That intro that lasts forever. That awesome transition from into the main section of the song. Just an awesome piece of songwriting. 6. The Craving (Single Version) | 96 | The extra instrumentation and the 'mmmhmmm mmmmhmms' seem to fit the themes and lyrics of this song so well. I just feel like the way that this version of the song is structured is so much better than Jenna's version and they should have just left this on the album as the only one, in my opinion. I understand the rawness of Jenna's version being an appeal, but the single version just fits the lyrical progression so much better. 5. Midwest Indigo | 97 | I agree with everything he explains in this video on why it's great. The lyricism is just so strong, and I love the way we go from being anxious to relaxed in just a few minutes. 4. Navigating | 98 | Just a perfect pop/rock song. Josh on the drums in between the verses and chorus make you fly into the sky. 3. Next Semester | 99 | Everything about this song is so great. So hopeful. So much about second chances and trying again despite your failures. The chorus is just so easy to sing along to that you can't help but believe it! 2. Oldies Station | 99.99999999 | Push on through. This freaking song. This song is LIFE in a song. The way the beat moves as if you're just going through the motions and then turns into going through the RIGHT motions. The more I hear this song, the more it makes me appreciate everything in life. I believe that the ending of this song is all the way to being someone who is elderly, and what it's like to live a life trusting God and being someone who has virtually no anxiety as a result. 1. Paladin Strait | 100 | This song is just so perfect. I can't believe how much I connect to this song because it's so much about believing in something despite whatever looks difficult in front of you. In this case, I believe Tyler means God on the other shoreline, and no matter how rough the waters in your life ahead look, God is always with you and knows that you can make it through. Just such a work of art. So much emotion and the culmination of the ending tracks of the last few albums. Especially Goner and Leave The City.

    Vignette, Routines in the Night and ATROFD are all in my top 5. Which to me shows how TØP make a little something for everyone. You and I probably have very different taste in music. What I like most about TØP is the way they fuse a dark hip-hop style with an alternative funky indie style, so songs with that present in them speak to me.

    I really don’t think the line about the proctologist is saying “get screwed.” I can’t see how it would mean that. A proctologist is supposed to help diagnose and promote health, but in this case, it’s being used completely inappropriately. He says “I see what your problem is” which I think means he’s pointing out how a lot of people living that lavished lifestyle don’t get confronted with their problems, instead they’re able to take advantage of each situation, and pretty commonly, have very broken and inappropriate sexual relationships

  • @Legend-in-Pyjamas
    @Legend-in-Pyjamas4 күн бұрын

    #13: Lavish Love the proctoligist line and the music video. The genre of music isn't one that would appeal to Tøp fans, but is something that a non-tøp fan could stumble across and enjoy. Glad it's on the album even if it's not my taste in music and wish it got a better reception. #12: Routines in the Night (sorry Josh) Beautiful imagery and a good melody. Feels predictable and perhaps lacks variety in the melody. The type of music you could play with friends. #11: At the Risk of Feeling Dumb I love that it's direct and to the point. A message that ought to be said directly and to the point. Everything from the verse to the chorus also sounds great. On another day I could put this at #5 and honestly I'm surprised I've kept it so low. #10: Next Semester Feels so repetitive. The melody is phenomenal but I feel it's let down by the lack of variety in the lyrics. I was never able to get into it and feel that this could've been the song that would go on to become a hit but didn't. Glad it's well received by the fans though. #9: Backslide When it first released I'd said that this would be my favourite song on the album. While I don't listen to it as much any more I appreciate the lyrics and is definitely something worth listening to when you're down. A bit of positivity is shown in the music video (shifting the cycle) but another song that feels like it has less hope when compared to previous Tøp songs (for ex the way guns for hands, not today or lovely promise a way out (each in their own way)) {again this may just be me} #8: Oldies Station Stressed out talked about the fear of getting older. In oldies station we deal with the consequences of it (growing older) and what it entails (ex losing close friends). Your eyes adjust to the darkness as you push on though. Surprisingly (imo) lacks positivity or hope for a tøp song. #7: Navigating If Migrane was describing the emotions you feel, Navigating would highlight the effects of these emotions. Catchy tune and sounds phenomenonal. I love the use of time like in Midwest Indigo. If any song were to break beyond the fan base it should be this. #6: The Craving Both versions offer a different sound that what is seen on other Clancy songs. Raw and genuine. The single version can also be a nice reminder of how hard it is to please fans and deal with your emotions when a song isn't perceived well. #5: Vignette I like the concept of being swallowed by a vignette. Another song that can be interpreted either in a lore way or as is (addiction). Catchy musically. May drop down as I listen to it more. #4: Overcompensate The reimagined version of bandito symblolizing how it's time to tear apart this world is nice. Personally don't relate much to the lyrics but the song is musically satisfying and the ideal opening track. #3: Midwest Indigo For every reason you stated. #2: Paladin Strait A song that can be interpreted differently depending on whether or not you care for the lore for ex. the hurling storm and angry waves could represent how difficult and can be to gain courage to face our demons and fight for control (lore) or represent our emotional turbulence (no lore). Very lyrically rich, relatable and calming. Love that it emphasises the importance of relationships. #1: Snap Back Imagery and lyrics that reach out. Relatable themes

    Uff. If I hadn't seen that bottom 3 I would've said it's a solid top 5. It's def one I haven't seen. Not that originality counts for sth as it's your personal top but I just liked to point it out. I for sure disagree with the bottom 3. I love Vignette musically. Routines for me it's one of the most straight forward songs on the album: a full on introspective banger. And then Overcompensate is just fun. I get that it may be a little wild musically, and even Vignette as well but idk I like em. Speciallly the 1st 2 cause they're in my top 5. But yk what else is on there? Navigating and Next Semester. So I can't hate on your list. I do agree that Navigating just slaps and the music compliments the lyrics very well, even though there's not much going on there. I knew you were gonna have Next Semester high knowing what seemed to be your prefference when it came to the album tracks. I love this song. It's such an anthem. I wasn't really into the bridge at 1st as it sounded a bit generic but I now I see it as the climax of the song. The lyrics do hit hard. Love the punk vibes, it gave me a lot of nostalgia as in that mid-2000's alternative like The Killers and early Arctic Monkeys. My fav out the entire album. I could see already that you'd gravitate towards The Craving. It's not my fav from the ones he dedicated to Jenna (Tear In My Heart) but it for sure is the best one at getting the sentiment across. Her version is more intimate and that's why I preffer it but the single one is on that level, too. Idk which one you preffer. And it's the 1st time I see someone putting Midwest Indigo 1st on their list. I do like it though. It barely misses my top 5 but I'm not even sure how it's totally shaped. I just have my top 3 locked in and I see 2 in your top 5 and 1 at the bottom 3. 2/3 it's a W in my books. Great video. Glad to see you back and analysing the lyrics from Clancy. I do feel as well that it's a return to form for the band and I'm not mad at all for them not being super lore heavy on here, even if Trench is my fav album, cause that's why I fell in love with them in the 1st place. Takes me back to the Vessel era with that thought in mind, but keeping that wildness of Trench in the musical standpoint. Love the album and the video

    Lavish is genuinely the only TØP song I hate. Which is frustrating because, excluding Lavish, Clancy is a contender for my favorite TØP album. The proctologist line really took me off guard, grossed me out, and completely soured my experience listening to the album for the first time. Even more frustrating is that I haven't seen ANYONE else agree with me about this, so it makes me feel like I'm crazy or something. (But if I'm being honest, sexual innuendo has always been something that ruins music for me. That's why I can't get into a lot of rap/hip-hop stuff.)

    That line in Lavish is uncomfortable, but I actually think it's a clever way to describe the way the music industry can screw musicians over. It's a strong visual without being blatantly obscene. It's walking a fine line where it gets the point across, but if I play it in front of my kids, it will go over their heads.

    My rankings of Clancy 1. Paladin strait. For me it’s about God. I think it could and hope it is about God for Tyler, or at least about God and or anyone else he’s making his way toward. It’s so emotional and builds up so much. The music video was amazing, but I knew this was my favourite the first time I listened starting at the picture of Tyler looking across the ocean. I don’t understand how that picture can mean anything other than him singing to God. 2. Backslide. The lyrics and chorus build are great. The production is very headphony which I like. 3. Overcompensate. The lyrics aren’t my favourite in terms of depth and I agree with u about it being over lore heavy. But the intro 2 minutes is some of my favourite bit of music they’ve ever made. The beat, drums, switches, the bandito sample are all so hype. If this song only had the main section that starts with the “earned my stripes line”, it would probably be as low as 9 or 10. 4. Next semester. Deep song. Keeps it moving with the beat. Nice punky song which I’ve been more into lately. 5. At the risk of feeling dumb. It definitely sounded weird for me first few listens, but the beat drop at the bridge is too good for me to have it lower. 6. Vignette. I wish I screamed the chorus the second time through. It would have added so much. I don’t know why he did it. I think the song has some deep meanings we haven’t unlocked yet. 7. Navigating. It’s a little formulaic for me but it’s still good. 8. Midwest indigo. I really like it but a little too punchy and the vocal production isn’t my favourite. 9. Oldies station. A little boring musically and a little shallow lyrically. It has a good message but doesn’t climax. What I mean is he says push on through and all that but doesn’t give any ultimate reason why we humans should push on through. 10. Routines in the night. It’s low for the same reason the Outside is low. It’s super catchy and the one everyone likes the most at the beginning, but there’s not enough musical variety in it to be considered at the top. 11. The craving. I think the lyrics are perfect, but the single version is too poppy and the Jenna’s version only has ukulele which is kind of disappointing. It communicates the emotion but I appreciate more production going into the tracks on any given album. 12. Snap back. It’s not my favourite musically. It hasn’t clicked. The spoken word doesn’t sound good to me. 13. Lavish. It’s too weird. Some songs aren’t bad but just too weird to take seriously

Lavish 7/10 The line in Midwest Indigo is "I'm a bit too old to runaway." I like that line in Lavish because it's a clever way to say you're getting f&$&%@ (though I don't mind cursing at all but I appreciate Tyler using creative lyrics instead. Cliff and I were in agreement that Morph was the best song on Trench, but we're pretty far apart on Clancy. Backslide was my favorite. Paladin Strait is a close 2nd...the melody has flavors of Simon & Garfunkel. Navigating was a bit too 80's for my taste, and Lavash may be my least favorite TOP song of all time. I just didn't get it.
