@@preamstrikbiz0 I have heard some people claim that but I have an Action Replay Plus, ST-Key, and a Pseudo Saturn cart; the last two have selector switches and all of them work just fine. The only issue I have seen is if I have a game set for 4MB and it needs 1MB that sometimes it will freak out with the graphics as shown in the video. The big thing as Joe mentioned is make sure the edges of your cart are beveled as the port is SUPER fragile. I wish 1UpCard made a Saturn cleaner just to get into there and help get it super clean and keep it that way, every bit helps.

Not really. The Neo Geo and even the Playstation 1 were actually better at doing 2D games. The Saturn wasn't even capable of doing a 1:1 version of Symphony of the Night. The only thing the Saturn had over the PS1 was more RAM in some cases. The bottom line is that if you're better at 3D, you're basically better at 2D, too.

That's not true Bob.... Back then the Saturn was made to focus on 2d games while the PS excelled at 3d due to how the systems was made. And the castlevina port did not receive the same care the ps1 version got. The Saturn version could have been technically possible but konomi dropped the ball. Unlike xmen vs street fighter was technically impossible due to the ps1 limited RAM pool.

That's the one thing I wish I would have got for my Saturn was the RAM cartridge. I know those fighting games especially had fantastic animation when the Ram cartridge was used. The only thing I have for my Saturn that uses the cartridge slot is the Netlink modem, and the Saturn gameshark. And I've only used the gameshark for it once, back in the 1990's or whenever it was when I first got it. I don't even know if there still coming out with new codes for it, I'll have to check sometime. I have a gameshark for my Dreamcast to but I have it stored away and haven't used it in forever too. I think the Dreamcast one was on a disk if I remember right.

What a fantastic string of games in this video from King of Fighters '95 through Metal Slug. You can even add Groove On Fight which is pretty good and was my first proper RAM cart game(I had Marvel Super Heroes before the cart). One neat feature of Groove on Fight is the ability to use the downed fighters as weapons. Metal Slug on Saturn was also my introduction to the series. I didn't know what to think for a while since I hadn't played a 2D action game like that in a while due to the 3D craze. The one-hit deaths were harsh too, but I got into it because it was impressive. I loved King of Fighters '97 and it was my favorite fighting game on the Saturn. I instantly fell in love with it seeing it in a comic shop, even though it was right next to a Street Fighter 3 cabinet. KOF just appealed to me more. The limited amount of music in KOF'97 is an issue and I point that out. Still, the rest of the presentation, including the sound effects are so strong that it was less of an issue than I expected. That was definitely one of the main improvements for KOF'98, though much of the gameplay carries over from 97 so they were almost there with that edition and I suspect it was just limited development time more than anything. I've been playing a combination of Marvel Super Heroes, Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, and X-Men vs. Street Fighter in recent weeks(just played some XMvsSF last night) and can appreciate them more now than I could in 1997 and 1998 for various reasons. I had never played MSHvsSF before. There were more changes to the game than I expected including many background updates. The game also feels a tad looser than XMvsSF, not in a bad way. It feels just a bit smoother in its control. XMvsSF feels slightly more intense as a result. I have issues with both rosters, but I think I prefer XMvsSF's roster. Great games though, both of them. Lastly, good observation regarding the flashing on KOF. I've noticed that it can bother me, at least some of the time. Capcom used flashing as well, though not red like SNK. Depending on other factors like sleep, it can be pretty bad for me. This reminded me to look up that infamous Pokemon episode to see when it aired(December 1997) because I noticed both Capcom and SNK added options to their fighting games to toggle the flashing and that started for their 1998 games(as I recall, KOF98, Last Blade 2, Marvel vs. Capcom are the ones I checked), so it does support my theory that it was due to the Pokemon episode.

No wonder fighting games no longer hold my attention. There were so many back in the 90's.

Falcom Classics on the Saturn are to this day my favourite versions of Ys I and II. I adore the visuals and music for that version, and the FMV was just gravy. The 8-way movement feels a lot better in my opinion, too. I actually tracked down those versions back when I first watched your original Ys video, Joe, so thank you for that!!!

Amazing Video!! Nice to learn some new things about my Saturn collection too - I had no idea a couple of my Japanese games were using the Video card OR that the Stereo on Metal Slug actually worked (by switching to mono and back). Cheers Joe! btw. The Rom cart for Kof'95 isn't region locked, so the Japanese cart works with the European version of the game and Vice Versa.

I wish ram and rom carts were also used for 3D (better texture details, enhanced framebuffer color depth, dithering removal and framerate) Saturn games (including lighting/full alpha blending transperiacies, maybe a rectangle sprite/triangle polygon support cach ram cart/action replay variants) and western 2D games. Also, more rom carts for action/fighting/arcade games. Great creation accessories sega ever made. With the 4MB saturn it rivals the n64 pak which is 4 MB. Only edge n64 has is its flexible unified ram. However, it is better utilize than the n64 expansion paks. Can you also do video on the pce cd ram cards especially arcade card?

The Gungriffon games were great! If they had at least double the resolution and draw-distances, they'd be awesome. In any case, they could really use an official re-release on modern platforms. 🙏

Amazing video Joe. Super helpful thank you. Watching this reminds me how awesome my Saturn is. Street Fighter Zero 3 and Xmen vs Streetfighter on Saturn are my favourite one on one fighters of all time on any system. They’re incredible. Wish Konami had used the RAM cards for Symphony of the Night - might have improved it?

There is a mistake in the video. Samurai Shodown 3 was released before SS4 on Saturn. I know because I bought all the SNK games when they released and I had it before number 4. A simple wiki search confirmed it. SS3 released on November 8th 1996 and SS4 on October 2nd 1997…
