As a Chinese, it is a painful thing to consider buying a car recently. At the beginning of the year, I liked the Leap C11, and then last month, I saw the Zeeker X, which is even better-looking, with stronger functions and performance, and the price is about the same, both under 200000 yuan. And when I was researching the Zeeker X, I also saw that BYD is about to release the Song L, equipped with BYD's three-electric system and the latest chassis technology, and the most important thing is expected to be around 200000 yuan. The competition among car companies is too fierce, and consumers can't keep up.😂😂😂

@@InsideChinaAuto LinkCo / Zeekr managed to have a very distinct yet cohesive design as a brand, that's not easy to do for sure. Even interiors are hard, I saw how many you have shown that had the exact same basic look. The Zeekr has some very interesting tricks that makes its interior very unique and features you just don't see in its segment. This is extremely exciting. You raise a very interesting question: how to appear fresh and innovative when you are a 100 years old brand ? I also wonder how many 9f these brands will still be around in 10 years... Also, could you make a video about ev charging infrastructure in China? So curious about that, too.
@InsideChinaAuto
Жыл бұрын
Sometimes to stay fresh you have to forget what you've learned. In our interview with the GAC designer, he said legacy brands are burdened with their history and memory of how a car should be whereas Chinese in general, without that long history in cars, have different ideas of how a car should be. Design is always subjective though. What I might love you might hate, and vice versa. Neither is right or wrong. Glad you enjoyed the video. I'll see what I can do about charging infrastructure and how to make it as interesting as possible.

Great coverage thanks. I try and follow this space but even I'm amazed at the competition, now I understand why Tesla cut their prices and i wonder what you think they need to do to compete in China?
@InsideChinaAuto
Жыл бұрын
You're very welcome. The competition is fierce as hell here, but China are still in a good place in my opinion. They are still the best selling electric cars in China, they have a strong following and good sentiment, but they do need to keep developing their product and keep them fresh. Their range is getting old, they haven't updated FSD here for about 2 years I hear, and it doesn't seem like anything is on the way from them. China's car companies change it up at crazy speed, see the updated NIO ET7 for example just one year after launch, and Tesla's lead won't last long if they don't keep up. Their biggest advantage is that people don't think of them like other legacy OEMs since they never were.
Thank you very much for this extensive coverage! I'm surprised to see so much interest in Xpeng after so many months of poor sales. The BMW concept cars looked like some ugly toys, holy...

Chances are you can trust most of them now, especially if they get a 5-star Euro NCAP rating because then they've put the work in. Personally I really like the fit and finish of all the Geely brands and SEA is a great chassis. BYD I'm not sure are quite at the same level in that area but they're really good cars, top safety ratings, and they've done Europe before so they learned what they need to succeed. Both XPeng and NIO aren't exactly making profits yet so you can never say they're safe, but I do really like the G6 and G9, and all the NIOs above the ET5 are really good cars. Not sure I can cover all 100+ brands for you though. Haha. Aiways I think will be gone fairly soon so maybe avoid them for now.

The Chevrolet Seeker that was passed off as boring is a new hit debut in the US as the Chevrolet Trax. Can the Chinese afford the cars at these shows? American shows are filled with cars that no one can afford, which is all cars pretty much.

I'm not much of a fan of SUVs unless they offer something really special. No surprise it's doing well in the US though. But yeah, many Chinese can afford these cars, they're far more advanced and better off than you might believe from the outside.

Baojun and Wuling don't tend to show at car shows, certainly not the bigger ones. They are barely profitable cars so they don't waste time on expensive shows, they build hype on social media and it works just fine for them.

@@InsideChinaAuto All right! Thank you very much for answering me so quickly! 👍👍👍
HORCH was a German automobile brand of the upper class 1904-1945 (1958) and belonged like Audi (Audi was founded in 1910 by the former owner of Horch - August Horch - audi means horch in Latin) since 1932 to the AUTO UNION (symbolized by the 4 rings) . The trademark rights for both brands are owned by Volkswagen, Horch is used in China for the most luxurious limousine, similar to Maybach at Mercedes Benz.

Horch was a leading German luxury brand and is one of the predecessors of Audi, it has a simlar relation with Audi as Maybach has with Mercedes-Benz now, although the latter brand was simply bought. The latin translation of the imperative form verb "horch" (or "höre" e.g. "listen") is "Audi".

@@InsideChinaAuto I am not aware of any Audi other model that wears that name extension. I think the idea is similar to the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class or EQS 680 SUV, to revive an old luxury brand name and merge it with the core brand Audi / Mercedes-Benz to achieve more recognition and attention than the last standalone Maybach achieved. Horch used to sell more cars than Mercedes-Benz and Maybach, but today it is only known by people who have studied the history of Audi came to be as a company. Maybach is much more well known in Germany, because Daimler, now Mercedes-Benz, revived the Maybach name already in 2002 with standalone models.

@@InsideChinaAuto It is not a big risk, because Audi uses the name as a name extension. The car is supposed to be a direct answer to the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class. Audi learned from Mercedes that it is difficult to promote and reestablish an old luxury brand name compared to internationally well known brands like Rolls-Royce or Bentley. The desire to revive these brands probably came from the wish to have a comparable offering, that is seen as equal in terms of perceived level of luxury, and the opinion that Horch and Maybach stand for this "old style luxury", the kind of luxury that you think about when you watch old movies when the cars had these extremely long hoods etc.. Modern Audi and Mercedes brands have a much wider range of models in different price categories than they used to have. So they simply use that name to signal that this is the top of the line model out of the entire portfolio.

Are these booths/stands paid for by the brands or they're in fact invited?
@InsideChinaAuto
Жыл бұрын
I believe they pay for their booth but I'm not sure on the invite part because I heard something about Tesla not being invited, but then they didn't have anything new to show so might have chosen themselves not to come. But Shanghai is the major show that brands come to as a company, whereas smaller shows tend to be the local dealer groups organising I believe, something like that.
I bet you needed a lie down after that! It's an incredible show. But I don't know how you, or Chinese car buyers, keep track of all these brands and models when they seem in many ways so similar to each other. It looks like if you want to set up a new car company in China you just think of a brand name, choose a letter nobody else already uses, call your various models the J5 or K6 or L7 or M8 or whatever, do a variation on a styling theme, slap a couple of touch screens on the dashboard and hope for the best. Surely so many of these companies are going to disappear without trace. Hats off to BYD for bucking the trend and thinking up actual names - perhaps that's why they are so successful. I wish cars and their interiors in Europe were so colourful. I'm sick of grey cars with black interiors.

It was a long week, that's for sure, I was there a few times. And absolutely, there's just so many brands. You'd think they'd die off but when the market is so big, even a niche is big enough. To be fair, some will die, some already are. Weltmeister, Niutron, Evergrande, Enovate to name a few. I'm with you on names, I prefer real names, but the danger is that it's so easy for it to be offensive in another language so many are careful of that. Zeekr means something else in Arabic for example, so I heard. Truth is there was a lot of incentives to make electric cars, there still are in many areas, and that led to a boom that's still going, I mean just see Yangwang, iCar, NIO's upcoming mainstream brand, Xiaomi entering the space, the gold rush isn't over yet. But Chinese brands are fearless it seems, they just go at it, fail fast and move on, they're not afraid of cocking up. Chances are, the consolidation that eventually comes will likely just be bigger brands rolling up some of their sub-brands into product lines (see how Geometry is now a product line under Geely, not a separate brand as it was), and everyone will be happy. Still a long way to go in this game.

Electric vehicles accounted for about 40% of China's auto exports. Not impressed with any of the new cars; someone ought to show the designers a 1957 Citroen DS as an example of REAL CLASSY design. As for huge screens - too much information; hidden door handles? How do the rescue services force them open in a crash caused by looking at the huge screen? All those electrical controls must shorten battery life on the move so when the power goes does anything still work? As for those huge 'bridges' separating the two front seats... impossible to slide across to the passenger door in a crash or to access safely on the pavement side. No it's all too complicated. I like bench front seats, keys to start and open a car and a real pull up handbrake for starters. Dacia have got in right but even they are going too high tech for me!!!!
