Every dave meltzer five star match ranked from worst to best
@Wurzelknecht
3 жыл бұрын
That would be interesting, but also a long-ass list. Some of the 5-stars Meltzer gave out in the 80s were just confusing to me, and at times it seemed he threw a fiver at a match just for being chaotic and super violent and gory because of the novelty factor. Two matches that come to mind is the Sheepherders vs Fantastics, which in my memory just looked like your average ECW garbage brawl with lots of blood, and the other is the famous first 5-star match of Tiger Mask vs. Dynamite Kid from 83, which IMO is not their best match, and could be summed up as both of them spamming and no-selling Tombstones and Dynamite threatening to kill TM with a broken bottle out of frustration.

My parents got cable in 1997 when I was 9 years old. I'll never forget stumbling upon RAW is WAR on Monday nights on the USA Channel. I instantly became obsessed with Taker, Kane, DX, Austin, the Hart Foundation, Pillman, The Patriot, Shamrock, etc. I found out about WCW shortly after and never understood how anybody thought it was anywhere close to being as good as WWF until just recently lol.

It’s really great, I recently rewatched all the Raw’s and PPVs from 97, it’s really great, the only thing that brings it down is the post-Montreal malaise. I knew Canadian Stampede would be the #1 pick, especially after watching the In Your House rankings. I remember watching that live. Austin had serious heat. The pop the Hart Foundation got, gave me and still gives me chills. As far as wrestling pops go, it is in my top five.
The tides turned for the WWF in 1997, so it was a very important year for them, but 1998 was my favorite year for the Attitude Era overall.

HBK vs. Undertaker is a fantastic brawl and deserves so much more credit than it gets for being how a grudge match should play out. And while a non-finish is usually groan-inducing, for this match it made sense and gave logic to the need for the Hell in a Cell structure.

It wasn't even a real no finish, ended with pinfall. I mean yeah, distraction, but it is even more significant considering that Brock Lesnar attacked both Reigns and Strowman at HIAC 2018, and the match was called off. At Bad Blood, HBK was bleeding for God sake, yet he won via pinfall.

1997 The Dawn of the Attitude Era!!!
Possibly the greatest year in WWE history in terms of storytelling. The midcard was mostly shit, but there were some stars on the rise that were destined for greatness like Triple H, Mankind and The Rock, as well as a stacked main event roster who each seemed to have at least two feuds at once, and all were somehow interlinked with each other or led into the next feud. Bret feuded with Austin and HBK, the first leading to USA vs. Canada and Austin vs. Owen, and the feud between HBK/Bret led to HBK feuding with Taker, who at the same time was feuding with Paul Bearer and Mankind, which led to the Taker/Kane feud, which also resulted in a split between Bearer and Mankind, and so on and so forth. And despite all that went down in real life with HBK and Bret fighting backstage, Austin getting injured, the Montreal Screwjob and all that chaos, I don't think I have ever seen another year in wrestling where ALL the pieces fell into each other so perfectly. Well apart from gang warfare and the Junior-heavyweight division. That was shit. But hey, at least it introduced me to Taka Michinoku and Great Sasuke back then. Business-wise and in terms of the overall cards, 97 wasn't a strong year on first glance. But man oh man did it leave it's mark on history!
I was about to comment on how you didn't mention the steel cage match at Summerslam 97... but you mentioned it last hahaha absolute classic match for me, that whole event I had on a fucked up vhs tape held together with tape, it had a consistent outline of white noise around the screen, and had the word "battle royal" scribbled on it in byro, not sure why? But it is to this day one of the most memorable objects of my childhood... the other being the BB bullet I lodged in my earhole
If they do WCW by year they need to roll 2001 in to 2000
Half of the PPVs I missed during the VHS era of rental stores. Surprised watching this list, I only saw the bottom half of PPVs. One of my goals to watch on the Network 😊
Wait wait wait... so Austin won the Rumble in 97, Bret won the WWE title before Mania, Austin eliminated Bret controversially to win the Rumble, yet they somehow turned the Mania title match into Sid v Taker?? How did Vince not see that easy booking opportunity back then? I could understand 2020 Vince doing something like that, but back then? Austin v Bret at Mania was epic, but imagine how much more special it would’ve been had the title been on the line. Just doesn’t make any sense to me
Ironic that number 4 is The Final Four
Austin didn’t retain the IC title at summerslam he won it
We going way back! XD
good video
1. WrestleMania 13 (entirely due to Bret vs Austin) 2. Badd Blood 3. SummerSlam 4. Canadian Stampede 5. One Night Only 6. Final Four 7. Royal Rumble 8. Ground Zero 9. King of the Ring 10. Survivor Series 11. A Cold Day in Hell 12. Revenge of the Taker 13. DeGeneration X
I think Survivor Series is the start of the Attitude Era. It is the first time we ever see the WWF scratch logo, the first time we get a WWF Attitude commercial (which ironically included Bret Hart), and the first time we ever hear the D-Generation X music (which was used to promote the December PPV). It’s also the last time we see Bret Hart, the man who is the most synonymous with the New Generation Era, and he gets screwed for real on his way out the door. That’s as Attitude as it gets.
I have a feeling that the D-Generation X PPV should've be named Disqualification-X.
Lol did you just call Paul Bearer Undertaker's Dad?😂😂🤣🤣
Bearer isn’t Undertakers dad. He’s Kane’s dad. They have the same mother, but different fathers.
Is there ever going to be a WCW equivalent to this series I'd love to see that from the good old days to even the most interesting days in the company's final years
13. Survivor Series 12. D-Generation X 11. Ground Zero 10. Bad Blood 9. King of the Ring 8. Royal Rumble 7. Wrestlemania 13 6. A Cold Day in Hell 5. Revenge of the Taker 4. Final Four 3. One Night Only 2. Summerslam 1. Canadian Stampede

Bret vs Taker at SummerSlam is the best wrestling match ever, and shows why you don't need to do 500 movez a minute to have a good match. Shawn Michaels plays the role of referee to perfection. Every single thing that happens in the match matters and makes sense. Bret gives Undertaker by far his best match of his first 15 years. And damn, that finish. Bret Hart in 97 is the best single year any wrestler ever had.
It was Dude Love Pillman was facing at Bad Blood.
Soldiers in Spandex should be a new stable version reminiscent of Misfits in Action.

Difference between marks and wrastlin fans is marks only care about a ppv's in ring work, wrastlin fans like all the build up before, during and after a ppv.
Montreal Screwjob = wrong actions but necessary. Bret is morally right but Vince did what was necessary and I will never blame him for that. Could other things have happened? Yes. But the fact is Shawn stuck to his heels and Bret insisted on entering Montreal and leaving the place as Champion.
How is One Night Only higher rated than Rumble '97 and Badd Blood???
If that's true imagine how undertaker felt giving that tombstone on sid
Not sure how Vince wasn't 100% in the right regarding Survivor Series '97...
I hate beating this horse, but eh whatevs. I fail to see how people can think Vince was in the wrong. He did what he had to do to protect his promotion. Yea, his own fuck up for not getting the belt off Bret before freeing him up, but that's neither here nor there. That's coming from someone who considers Bret his personal GOAT. My all time favorite, and even I'm saying Vince wasn't wrong. I hated it, it sucked beyond belief, but it was a necessary evil that had to happen. Special mention, the DX PPV has Russo's diarrhea all over it.
How Owen didn't become a main event mega face after the screw job boggles the mind... (looking at you HBK and HHH). 1997 royal rumble could of been awesome. Owen and British Bulldog only lasted like 7 minutes if they were 2 of the final competitors with Bret Taker Mankind Vader it would of made it a lot more anticlimactic. They were the biggest stars in that rumble other then those guys so idk why eliminate them so early
JOIN US
Even the worst ppv DX was good too me
To me One Night Only would of been in a different place. All because of the ending. The British Bulldog dedicated his match to his sister for fighting cancer. At the time he was supposed to go over. Somehow Shawn Michaels convinced Vince to let Shawn go over. Then he rubbed it in their faces. I was angry about the screw job already but I didn't have the facts. Same with the end of the One Night Only but I felt bad for the heels here. Of course British Bulldog wasn't a heel but the Hart's were. And it made Americans look bad. It made what Bret Hart said about America look true. But years later when I found out Shawn knew about the screw job. I was not much of a fan of his or Vince. But then I heard he begged to win the match that British Bulldog dedicated to his sister that was it. I didn't like Shawn Michaels until he and Bret made mends. I don't care who he wrestled I would fast forward because he made me sick. Now I have went back and watched some of his matches.
