A classic unbelieveable match. Still the best I've ever seen I think. Liverpool really should have won.. their goals were class strikes from a class forward line, but Everton had incredible resolve and refused to give up. Don't think Grobellar made a save all match!

Every time I watch a Liverpool game from the 80s or early 90s grobbellar makes a cock up,either coming for a catch or in a mix up with his defence and then blames them for it.. Made some brilliant saves I know cos I used to be him on the school playground when I was a kid...

I recall a different commentary (perhaps on a highlights reel) where commentator went “Beardsley, still Beardsley, oh what a goal. What a goal by Peter Beardsley”. Anyone recall this?

This is exactly why I watched this video, the commentator was the very iconic Barry Davies, the same man who was commentating on this match. I will find it, because Davies was as great a commentator as John Motson.

@@dukmo4216 I absolutely will, I remember it vividly from when it happened and I have just remembered that I have it on VHS! I was bought the Liverpool FC centenary book and I then bought the video (revealing my age now!) and it's on the video which I am unable to play because I haven't had a video player for years, but I will have a look at the matches!

I think the game was shown live on BSkyB, as it was, with this commentary and then the highlights were shown on Sportsnight {for those under 40, an iconic midweek BBC sports show} with Barry Davies commentary. I can remember I was renovating my first house and my fiancée decided to come over for the evening. She sat upstairs in a huff while I listened to the game on radio two, in the rubble of the half demolished downstairs. Managed to get her to go home in time for me to sit and watch the highlights.

I was at this and then also went to the replay which we lost 1 nil. :( Everton just wouldn't give up. The replay and the game before this at Anfield were shite but then again most games are compared to that night. The next day Kenny resigned. It's all been down hill ever since!!!!

+garrylucylfc Hi mate I'm a Blue who was at this game as a then 14 year old. It was pure madness, and at 2-3 and 3-4 down I didn't see us coming back. One of the great games of English football. A cup tie, a derby and under floodlights gave it an amazing atmosphere. The decline of LFC began that night as Dalglish quit on the Friday after the game,Souness came in a wrecked the place. You've never been the same since, and we've been nothing but mediocre since our 80s glory days.

It was just one of those games. Surely Dalglish did not decide to quit because of this one result? It was said that the board were unhappy with his transfer dealings and some players were unhappy with his team selections and tactics. Nevertheless, Liverpool were still the best team in the land. He must regret leaving.

Dalglish should have taken a sabbatical upto 2 years. Backroom staff Roy Evans, Ronnie Moran, etc run the team. Squad remains untouched, no souness clearance sale. Apart from ensuring Alan shearer and Roy Keane are signed. Then after 2 years Dalglish comes back.

@@chamkaur1160 Kenny never really had to "manage" the team. He just had to send them out. They could beat anybody , except Arsenal on one famous occasion. In his last two seasons in charge he began to alter a tried and tested formula tinkering with tactics and personnel. He upset some key players and favoured others who he would never drop regardless of how poorly they played. Then there was some of his signings like Hysen in particular also Rosenthal, Speedie, Aldridge, Carter and Tanner. None of those were real Liverpool players in the classic sense. They were signed just because they were available. There was a lack of character in the team , particularly in central defence. Hansen was getting old and Hysen tended to go missing when the pressure was on. This match and the loss to Crystal Palace in the 1990 cup semi final would have haunted Dalglish. These things simply never happened before. The real characters of that particular side were (say what you like about him) Brucie, Nicol, Mc Mahon, Houghton and Rush. The worst thing that could have happened to Liverpool happened when they appointed Souness. Singularly, the actions of that man caused the complete retardation of the football club from which it has taken over thirty years to fully recover. That's the end of my sermon for today. Thank you.😁😁
