~ Synopsis ~
Everlasting Sorrow is a dizi concerto composed in collaboration by the famous Chinese composer Yang Chun Lin and the renowned Singapore-based dizi virtuoso Zhan Yong Ming. Based on the
masterpiece Song of Everlasting Sorrow by the Tang dynasty poet Bai Juyi, the piece depicts the tragedy of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang and Yang Guifei during the Anshi Rebellion. The piece comprises of six sections, based on the events and lines of the poem:
I. Introduction and dizi cadenza
II. Each smile she casts charms a hundred hearts, the beauties of six palaces rendered pale
III. The dance in rainbow dresses and feathered gowns
IV. The war drums of Yuyang sound
- The final parting at Mawei
- The search for her spirit at an enchanted mountain floating upon the mist at sea
V. May we be lovebirds in the heavens, conjoined branches on the earth
VI. Heaven and earth shall pass, but this sorrow shall never end
