Lyrics:
We've all seen a man at the liquor store beggin' for your change
The hair on his face is dirty, dread-locked, and full of mange
He asks a man for what he could spare, with shame in his eyes
"Get a job you fu**in' slob," is all he replies
God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in his shoes
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to sing the blues
(Hook)
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Mary got pregnant from a kid named Tom that said he was in love
He said, "don't worry about a thing, baby doll I'm the man you've been dreaming of."
But three months later he say he won't date her or return her calls
And she swear, "goddamn, if I find that man I'm cuttin' off his balls"
And then she heads for the clinic and she gets some static walking through the door.
They call her a killer, and they call her a sinner and they call her a whore
God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in her shoes
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to have to choose
(Hook)
I've seen a rich man beg I've seen a good man sin
I've seen a tough man cry
I've seen a loser win and a sad man grin
I heard an honest man lie
I've seen the good side of bad and the downside of up
And everything between
I licked the silver spoon drank from the golden cup
And smoked the finest green
I stroked the fattest dimes at least a couple of times
Before I broke their heart
You know where it ends, yo, it usually depends on where you start
I knew this kid named Max who used to get fat stacks out on the corner with drugs
He liked to hang out late he liked to get shit-faced and keep the pace with thugs
Until late one night there was a big gun fight and max lost his head
He pulled out his chrome .45, talked some shit, and wound up dead
Now his wife and his kids are caught in the midst of all of this pain
You know it comes that way at least that's what they say when you play the game
God forbid you ever had to wake up to hear the news
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to have to lose
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like to have to lose

There used be a woman I knew back when I was 20 years old. I liked her alot. She used to hang out with my friends and I but I was super shy. So I found out one night that she loved this song. I also loved this song. Over the weeks I would play this song whenever she was around to get her to come and ask who was controlling the music/who owned the ipod. Eventually we started connecting. 11 years later we are still married and happier than ever. I owe almost everything great in my life to this song. EDIT: 2 years later we are still married and so happy together. This comment thread is honestly my greatest internet memory. Everytime yall comment it reminds of this awesome memory I have. Cheers! EDIT EDIT: TREAT YOUR WOMAN LIKE A QUEEN! Edit 27 March 2024: 500 replies. Can't reply anymore. Glad everybody enjoys my mushy love story about my wonderful wife haha. We are still together for sure and I dont see it ending at any point in the future.

I remember listening to this song with my dad in the early 2000s. He passed away sadly due to an accidental overdose while I was in a treatment center for opiates. I remember leaving the service and sitting down with some roommates of mine breaking down crying. Out of nowhere my house manager comes into the room, picks up the guitar, and starts playing this song. This is the only song I would ever tie to my father especially on an acoustic guitar. It took me back instantly to riding in my fathers truck and him showing me all of his favorite songs. I never believed in any sort of afterlife or anything spiritual until after that moment. I knew that was my fathers way of saying everything will be alright and I will never forget it. I love and miss you so much papa and I hope you're looking down at me proud....

I've heard this song on the radio countless times, but I never listened to what he is saying until just now. This song is actually an amazing way of getting across the point that you should never label someone, or a group of people based on what you think you know about them, You need to try to view things from their perspective, and understand you do not have the full picture of that person's life which has lead them to the state you see them in.

That's very interesting to me, because I always thought he was referencing that statement to his relationship experience... You know...-like if you start a relationship with a gorgeous cheater, after "helping" them cheat on their lover... In the future they are definitely going to cheat on you. Or you on them. Or both. Or the relationship will just end because you can never fully trust each other. But now that I've lived a little longer, I've met couples who started, "dirty" ... And are still together to this day. So, who really knows. But it's beautiful how these lyrics stir the souls of everyone here enough to type about it. 🙂

The dude was the first artist for ice t to sign and promote with his 'rap syndicate' label and not just the first 'white' rqpper chosen had a lot to do with helping a lot of other dudes get there respect due. Eminem has aged like some clown shit and evalast is just getting more iconic and legendary. That real slim shady track from icp, necro, evalast etc, was fuckin funny as and is only g9nna come from real artists and independent labels who don't give a fuck about the profit margins, the same way 5hey care about their product or integrity and yw can't not respect that. He is in la coca nostra, with dudes like ill bill and vinny paz which is just one example of the many independent and real productions hes been a part of and still is. Dude obviously aims doing it for the money when it doesn't exist and the albums just bring scrutiny and problems for himself. Thats someone we should all look up to

@@vaskylark I think a song, a piece of literature, a movie or whatever, can present or open a person up to a new perspective. After all, some art is supposed to have meaning, not just blind entertainment. However, one song shouldn't be shaping you entirely as a person. I'm pretty sure the OP was exaggerating for the sake of showing their love for the song. That's the context I take it in anyway

I dont need to say who I am...I all know..just food for thoughts.. Many can say I'm wrong for the things I say or do, can you all go through all I have in the last 3 yrs and still be alive and well? Im no different than any of you.. I bleed the same as any of you. Im not saying that I haven't thought wrong or did wrong. If I could get what money I had coming to me before I went to prison. I could easily forget the past and move on... I'm, just not willing to walk away from money that I had owed for 19 yrs..child support, stocks, bonds, shares in companies + more...im broke my health is shitty and for the first time in my life I wanted a decent life to live and relax..How is that so damn wrong?
