That woman who had to turn back should look at it this way-there are a hell of a lot of people who are blinded by ambition who end up getting killed or killing others in the process, and the fact that she has the wisdom to put her obviously very strong desires on hold shows how strong she really is. What she did was not fail to make the journey. She triumphed in overcoming desire and ambition, and choosing to turn back got her closer to "enlightenment" than the people who get to the end of the trip.

@@PetraKann Serous mountain climbers know when to turn back and it is not cowardice, just good sense. There was no shame and defeat. As Ed Viesturs put it, going up is optional, coming down is not.

Lately I've watched and read a ton of stories about alpinism, climbing and mountaineering from Reinhold Messner to Alex Honnold, and all kinds of heroic feats of humanity. And yet, I gotta admit your "simple" story was a highlight for me and among the most captivating to follow. I guess, because you are regular hikers like the rest of us, and yet you pushed yourselves by having no help on this high altitude trip, you suffered and overcame difficult challenges and made your adventures very inspirational for everyone. I salute you, brothers!... THE YAKS ARE COMING!!!

Hi! This is a very nice compliment -- I really appreciate it. I think Free Solo, The Dawn Wall, Meru, are incredible films that everyone into adventure movies should watch. But, that said, I also agree that only so many of those kinds of movies can be made, and I think there's lots of other space for more subtle, normal-people stuff, and I glad you appreciated this for that reason. If you have any questions about how to plan this trip, let me know! -Hank

I did this trek in 2017 at the age of 60. I did it with intrepid travel with a group of 16. I had never done any hiking anywhere so didn’t really know what I was getting myself into. Everyone I asked just said it was great so I thought what the heck. From lukla and back we were allotted 13 days. Only 1 of our group did not complete the trek. I am happy to say that I did complete it. I won’t say I didn’t complain but the experience was like nothing else I had ever done in my life time and I’m really glad I did it. I love watching your video brings back great memories. Good on you guys doing it on your own.

This was my 2nd time watching this video and I enjoyed it this time as much now as I did the first time. I have watched numerous Everest base camp treks whose scenery was as good as this video but that had no narration. Without narration one is only getting part of the story. I liked the historical information that was given, I loved seeing the accommodations, the food, how the living conditions impacted their journey, and I really like how the trip was presented to the viewer. This may well be one of my very favorite Everest trekking videos. Thanks to the brothers for making it and for sharing it.

I liked your reflections as to the whys & wants of doing things like this - carpe diem. I'm ready to arrange EBC during the next few days for spring 2019. I share a lot of my experiences of bush craft living & canoe wild camping on my YT channel so it was really good to sit back & watch someone else for a change do their thing so thanks. You captured that by bringing other peoples stories of successes and fails which in turn, felt like we were on the journey with you. Also the bedroom scene was important as the conversation set up the daily challenges you (and we all ) face,it's very relatable and gain our empathy. Loved the accommodations and food segments, liked seeing someone not feeling well on a trip like this (unlike other EBC videos where nobody is shown getting sick). Note to all - Cipro is a miracle drug. Your video was entertaining , very enjoyable, and I like your sense of humor. I also like that you brought a game with you to use as an ice breaker. Thanks for the kind words, Chuck! Glad you liked the video! The bad news is that we did try taking broad-spectrum antibiotics while we were there to get better faster, but in the Khumbu Valley there were bugs with resistance to the antibiotics, so they didn't help. We felt way better on the way down though, probably partly due to the increase in oxygen and partly due to the stomach bug subsiding. If you like watching our disastrous trips, you must also like our Superstition Wilderness video... that one is also full of our incompetence. :)

Nice to hear your perspective of this amazing trekking. It reminds me my time there in 2014. feeling good most of the time, except the day we were suppose to get Everest base camp. I felt an amazing strong head ache ever. cried in pain. My guide was amazing to help me to get better, with his support and my desire to be there in the base camp I made it. Nice to see your brotherhood. All best travels to you... Just a small observation: Most of the time people don't have food poising. Remember your whole body system are exposed to altitude and that changes everything in your body, including the number and reaction of your own "good bacterias" that lived in your body forever. They are good friends of yo, by the way. Your whole intestine and stomach process changes in altitude. That's why, as well, some people get diarreia and nauseas. Of course, the conditions prevent us to have our own higiene as our body system are used too. That ,as well, can play a part on how we may feel there. Then we have the difference in spices, you may be allergic to some. plus, yes, in some occasion we can have, as anywhere in the world, food poising. We know that may happen, that why we go all prepared to that. The whole EXPERIENCE is what it counts. The contact with the Nepalese people, their culture it worth all, of course being there in those mountains make us really feel the presence of GOD. Our love and mind is there forever.

Great video. Interesting commentary, wonderful photography, and excellent audio. This is so much better than most of the other video logs I have viewed. You should (and will I'm sure) have 10 times the number of views in no time at all. I have thought about doing this myself, although I am 58. That's why I got a kick out of how amazed you were to find a 53 year old woman doing the hike.
