Ever Seen a Katana Flying in the Air?

Спорт

Not only the Kama sickle technique introduced in the opening video, but there are many other techniques with other weapons too that can blast the opponent’s katana.
So today, Seki sensei, the 22nd headmaster of Kobudo Asayama Ichiden Ryu with 400 years of history, will introduce 4 Kata with different weapons blasting the opponent’s katana. Since most Ryuha do not have such intense techniques with so many weapons, this video will surely be very valuable.
By the way, tickets for the 3-day training camp in Japan held by Seki Sensei and Let's ask Shogo are now on sale! Check out our Patreon page for more information!

    A lot of these fall in line with one of my instructor's favorite questions: "Who wins a grapple in a swordfight?" Answer: "The first person who realizes you are no longer in a swordfight." The number of times she has disarmed or outright thrown people is comical.

    That final kata, the Jo techniques, those really stood out to me. They're so simple, but the simplicity is the secret to the effectiveness - and it's an easy one to adapt to my HEMA sparring as well. The unarmed kata in the first situation is very useful for modern situations as well, it seems - it would have to be adjusted to account for the much shorter blade and handle of a knife compared to a sword, but it could very effectively restrain and potentially disarm an attacker in a pinch. Thank you Sensei!

    I noticed a few kama attacks are similar to axe fighting techniques, very interesting to see. Perhaps give Seki sensei a axe to fight with, see what he comes up with, I expect kama style techniques to show, but he could surprise me. And yes, I am from Viking decent, which is also how I noticed the similarities. 5:28 This specific move, if he would release the weapon with his left hand, wouldn't it strike harder and there for do more damage to the opponent? Attacking the shins as hard as possible could potentially incapacitate or floor your enemy as well depending on the opponent's stance and the power you use to swing the staff. A mere stick can do incredible damage if used properly.

    It's been nearly a year since you started this channel. I'd be very interested to know the thoughts of both Shogo san and Seki sensei regarding the value of the online training opportunities. Have any participants been inspired to visit Seki sensei's dojo in Japan or to attend or organize any seminars, etc.? There's a very commonly repeated maxim that "you can't learn a martial art over the Internet." Do you think you have compelling evidence yet to refute this view?

    I think its important to understand the distinction between combat on a battle field and combat for survival, self-defense by another word. In a warzone, in a battle you have mates, and Allies and you have back-up and support teams. Your training and fighting acumen needs to reflect that. So you train to be a unit less so a warrior. Your tactics are shoulder-to-shoulder and back-to-back and circle-up. Everyone needs to be on the same page and making the same moves and implying the same restrictions to maintain a cohesive power. A fighting force. Not just a rabble farce. Self-Defense? Survival Combat? Self-Alone Guerilla Battle? Any, and all, advantage or leverage or even cheat needs to be utilized. You need to be ready to fight with whatever is at hand. Like, sure. Moral Considerations, I'd never personally use poison to defend myself simply because if the offender leaves and the poison doesn't? I'm the asshole. I also take the first hit, or at least wait for the first strike to get mean. I'm not in a warzone so I have no one counting on me and I have no one to count on so, if I throw my boot or leave my knife in a ... tree limb, not a problem. I could throw my weapon -outright- and not a dang person but me has to regret it, you know? What's wrong with a little "b'Zerker Flaying" with a huge pole between enemies of convenience. Eh?

    As much as I love this and as cool as it seems, I just cant see the first 3 katas being effective in real time/real fight scenarios. I would LOVE Seki Sensei to prove me wrong, or to speak to my concerns. I'll make my points: Kata 1 (Kama): If the opponent draws without holding back, it's too risky to try to intercept the draw, not knowing if he will strike higher or mid body. If you miss the catch or are too late to intercept, it's over. The chance of success ratio doesn't make it seem worth trying. Kata 2 (Katana): I would trust this Kata more than the Kama Kata, but the opponent could grab your hilt with his free hand (scabbard hand), possible taking it or at least preventing the upward tilt of the blade for attack. What's the best approach should this happen? Kata 3 (Chain): I strongly believe it is possible to block the strike with the chain, but having time to wrap the chain around the blade and disarm doesn't seem possible in real time. Also, if the opponent follows through with the swing of the blade, it could overpower the tensile strength that your arms are applying to the chain and slip through the block, or even come down enough to hit your head or shoulder Kata 4 (Jo): This is the most plausible of all katas in my opinion, but I don't think it is easy to blast disarm a katana wielded by someone with a very firm grip. I do believe this is a very effective way of parrying though. Anyhow, thanks for entertaining my thoughts. I would love to see this in sparring speed with safety gear and no sense for holding back. Best Regards :)

    You are taking the kata too literally. It’s like doing boxing drills and expecting a fight to go the same way. It’s the principle knowledge that matters not the choreographed steps to get to that point. Learning these skills is not about replicating the kata. They are about seizing an opportunity if one presents itself for you to take. They will never look like the kata.

  • @AcesHighMedia

    @AcesHighMedia

    @@HeyyyJude Of course! Its repetition in motion. Of course I have to take them literally because they literally are literal. They were designed for what if not to defend yourself against an attacker? Just how Karate has katas that would prove useful, not as a whole but individually should the opportunity present itself, but if the opportunity presents itself, shouldn't it be proven to work? I'm not making these points or asking these questions to be malicious, this is a new realm of discovery for me outside of hand to hand combat and I truly want to know the answers.

  • @HeyyyJude

    @HeyyyJude

    @@AcesHighMedia for example, the first kata where the sword is drawn and seki-sensei stops the attack by stepping off line of a horizontal (into the path of the sword) attack and grabbing the arm then disarming. I agree that this is VERY unlikely to work. In my own kenjutsu, the kata are not to be taken entirely literally. They are safe, choreographed steps to practice a PARTICULAR concept (the actual disarming of the sword, not the walk forward and grab a moving hand from a distance). So in reality, you wouldn’t see a man walk forward on an enemy attacking from a distance. You are more likely to use this technique if you are already in close quarters. I can’t speak for seki-sensei’s school since I don’t study it but only offer what I’ve been taught. Kata teach concepts that you will need to figure out how to use in a live-scenario. It’s probably not the answer you were looking for. Koryu is a preservationist passion for martial arts and culture. You will have a hard time trying to learn how to actually use these concepts in this day and age because that style of fighting is gone. One last note: the kata are not omnipotent, game-ending skills/concepts. They are simply skills and knowing when to use them is just as important.
