Even with insurance, woman hit with $40,000 in medical bills

When Molly McKenna went to a clinic in agonizing pain, doctors told her it was an emergency. Weeks later, she was told much of her treatment was out-of-network and she owed more than $40,000. Anna Werner reports.

My bill was near $2M in 1996. I had been struck by a car after exiting a school bus as a nine year old. Suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and lived at hospital for about eight months--couple of months in ICU and the remaining in recovery/therapy. Had it not been for my Dad's employer covering the costs, I don't know where I would've ended up. The healthcare system here is ridiculous! There was a story of a girl who got stabbed who chose to call Uber to drive her to hospital rather than an ambulance.

Out-of-Network should be illegal, All doctors & hospitals should be required to be In-Network, period. What's the purpose of having health insurance if nobody will take it. If I tell you what insurance I have & you use an out-of-network doctor to perform the surgery, the hospital should be penalized or sued.

I have 2 100% block and other 6 block that are 70-80% block. They don't know why I am still alive maybe because I am a young guy. My family has heart problem. 😢 They do a stent, but it fails, and I got discharged. My insurance is trying denied claim even thought it was innet work. My bill was 110k and I am not even fix because I can still die at time since my block are still there. All they gave me was BP med and Aspirin.

@@skdoinit Your credit score will tank and your wages might be garnished. Tell the hospital you cannot pay $40k. They have a pot of money that is used to cover patients who are broke. But keep in mind that this allowance is refilled at the beginning of the year, it's probably gone by now. The hospital is going to ask "what can you pay?" when you call. Give them a very small number, or nothing at all. If you say: "I could pay $10k if I drastically changed my lifestyle" then they'll reduce your bill to $20k. If you say: "I'm a single-parent on government checks" then that bill will be entirely covered. Try to avoid lying though. That could get you in legal trouble.

Please read what I am going to tell you. Hospitals and anything medical related , they will do as many tests and do anything to add to your bill. And heaven forbid you end up in the emergency room! This country has a problem. Every year I keep waiting on a huge depression coming because one illness , one accident and even if you have insurance,,,, it will ruin your life and any generational wealth you wanted to pass down to your children. I work in the dental field. Dental offices look for any reason to prep a tooth. A filling is $100. A crown is $1200. Which one do you think an office will choose for you? And this is dentistry! This goes beyond teeth! I don't pretend to know the answers. I have been to Cuba and socialism is definitely not the answer. Not when you walked the streets down there and really seen what I have seen I don't know, but something has to be done.
