Official Statement from the Queens Swan Sanctuary.. ““There has been a great deal of press coverage in recent months regarding the ‘Ban the Bread’ campaign which is confusing many members of the public who like to feed swans. Supporters of the campaign claim that bread should not be fed to swans on the grounds that it is bad for them. This is not correct. Swans have been fed bread for many hundreds of years without causing any ill effects. While bread may not be the best dietary option for swans compared to their natural food such as river weed, it has become a very important source of energy for them, supplementing their natural diet and helping them to survive when vegetation is very scarce. There is no good reason not to feed bread to swans, provided it is not mouldy. Most households have surplus bread and children have always enjoyed feeding swans with their parents. The ‘Ban the Bread’ campaign is already having a deleterious impact upon the swan population; I am receiving reports of underweight cygnets and adult birds, and a number of swans from large flocks have begun to wander into roads in search of food. This poses the further risk of swans being hit by vehicles. Malnutrition also increases their vulnerability to fatal diseases like avian-flu which has caused the deaths of many mute swans and other waterfowl in the past. Furthermore, there have been statements made in the media claiming that feeding bread causes angel-wing in swans. Angel-wing is a condition where a cygnet develops a deformed wing. Professor Christopher Perrins, LVO, FRS of the Department of Zoology at Oxford University stated, ‘There is no evidence of a connection between feeding bread and angel-wing; at least some cygnets develop this condition without ever having seen any bread’. I therefore encourage members of the public to continue feeding swans to help improve their chances of survival”. i will link the article in the description.

yes there are many signs here at lakes and rivers to not feed them period. even arguably more nutritious than bread. i think the logic is if they lose the ability to fend for themselves they will just rely on humans. if the humans fail to show for their feeding entertainment then they will starve. same with every life form i suppose.

thanks so much Chris. i had to check to make sure, like you i was hugely annoyed when the controversy started. lets not make waves, bread is as harmful to humans as it swans, it contains carbs and sugars aplenty which are not nutritious and yet at the same time absolutely delicious. i eat bread on special occasions, birthdays, Christmas eves and on holiday. other than that not. it is my absolute favourite thing on the planet to eat. not feeding bread to swans is causing more harm than good.as the article states they are walking into roads and going places looking for food that they should not and getting killed! lets grab a loaf and feed those swans! lucky swans ♥️ 🦢

My favourite thing about Scarbados is the beach/coastline but it's good to know there's stuff to do on a rainy day. The museum and art gallery looked great! Reasonably priced too! The swans looked a bit dangerous! Awesome views from the castle! Great budget tour!

thats great to know Matt, we are planning a Yorkshires top hidden beaches video at some point. even at the height of the season i can find a dozen secluded beaches on this coastline. £3 a year is a great price and naughtily ive now a years access to two very centrally located toilets! if i use them 7 times in the following year i shall start saving money! have an awesome weekend! 👍

There's so much to see and do in Scarborough! Being a small town it certainly has a lot with an art gallery, a museum and a castle! That's a 'Big 3" for any city! The nature part was well covered too, I think Scarborough needs to go on my list of places to see in a future visit.

Hi Nick and Jill, well you visited so many places that day, there is so much to do. The gallery was lovely and had so many beautiful paintings. The Mere was a peaceful place to visit and loved seeing the swans even though they nearly bit your fingers off. The look around the castle was great the views out to sea were amazing. sshh. took us two days, dont tell anyone! 😂 to be fair we could have filmed it in one but its rained so much its hard to get out when the sun is shining. although we did film a walking tour on one of those days if we need to beef up the hours. that swan really went for me. ive been bitten by swans before, they never hurt, i must be getting old, that one did! don’t get bit by a goose though they will take a finger.. all our love xx

It was actually WW1 Alessa. A sneaky German submarine that, legend has it came up to listen to the Spa Orchestra every night, bombarded our Castle in 1914. Before that the keep was pretty much intact! Xx

Boo! thanks Simon, yes particularly i the Rotunda Museum which is round! it was so busy in there, will have to revisit when its not the School holidays to get some more footage! going to try and stick with this “top things on a budget” series once a fortnight. mind you nobody had ever heard of Helmsley so ive learnt from that mistake, took a hit with the numbers that week! got some very different projects on the alternate weeks though including one ive been waiting months to do and am very excited about…

Wow What a great start to the video with Jill looking fab.u.lous ... I'm loving the hair. That mural behind her is also a great welcome to the town. I loved everything there is to offer about Scarborough although I do have a few favourites. Aww the puffin mosaic. The Mere was wonderful ... great info at the start regarding feeding the swans .. obviously partial to Warburtons 🤣 and in my experience fish n chips !! I had a rather uncomfortable few moments with a swan hammering on the car window with its beak trying to steal my fish n chip supper !! Had to beat a hasty retreat 🙃 Lovin the views of both bays from the castle and I'm sure folks will come from far & wide just to experience that. Oliver's mount, wonderful too and what a great place for a cafe, also as Jill says to end the day and reflect on what an awesome place Scarborough is with so much to do rain or shine ... awesome place and awesome video, well done another winner 😍

Hi Christine, Jill here thank you so much your comments are always wonderful and thank you for the kind compliment should make more effort people seem to like it 🤣 the Muriel’s are nice around the town but unfortunately they hide all the empty spaces which is a shame and a waste but they hide them well in certain areas! The puffin mosaic was lovely I’m a little keen in getting in touch with the artist for one for myself! Yeah we thought it important to mention the feeding of bread to swans as there has been a lot of controversy online! live your swan that likes a fish and chip supper 👍 hope your week is going well so far! Absolute treat to watch and great things to do with the tips and information 😁 beautiful art gallery and museum, well worth the visit. Love the collection for puffins, hope to see a real one someday 😂 it’s great to feed the swans, just be careful of your fingers! Castle was impressive too, never thought they had ice cream back in the day 🤣 but lovely views, especially from The Mount. Thanks for sharing an awesome list.

ive been there a million times, its a regular haunt, whilst they have photos and gates to close off sections to prevent fish, ive never seen one. my regular Otter expert says i should be going at first or last light to see them. i will catch them at some point. if they have a magenta hue i will be made up ♥️

Scarborough 🎶, who doesn't know the name - though plenty won't have ever been there. Certainly a destination worth visiting. Love the view from the top- and Jill, a chair was all you needed to have a good lick off the ice cream....Thanks for the train day trip. I'm hoping to go on one Wednesday...just love a day away. Thanks Alistair, yes the tourism board might be singing my praises at the moment. They will be cursing me in a few weeks when i do a video called “Boarded Up Scarborough, The Death of the High Street”, we have hardly any shops open in the town centre, its genuinely shocking, I will be pointing out that to get to any attraction from the train station you have to walk through those shameful streets. Not a great first impression! I suppose many high streets have been left to ruin too but when we did our research for this project last week i was amazed and appalled to see the true extent of the closures. And that is before Wilcos announced it is going into administration a couple of days ago. Thats one of our only shops.. the Olivers Mount racing is great fun albeit a bit noisy for us, we live right next to the Mount! Hope your having an awesome weekend and avoiding the crowds! ♥️ 🥾

Really enjoying watching your coastal videos. Loving your hair down Jill! Great seeing bits we usually miss. Some of the art in the gallery is awesome. The Mere is new to us too, I love that you can walk all around it. I will certainly need to rewatch your videos when we next get to do a trip to Yorkshire. I've seen and I think parked near the castle before, but never been in. The views are spectacular. The castle will be top of my list for a future visit to Scarborough. A bench with a view, perfect! thank you Nettie, yes that comment about the Mere was a real dig at Hornsea, video out next week, after watching several youtubers fail to get to the Mere we rang up Hornsea Tourism and they assured us you can access it. You can’t and we even spoke to some locals that said most of it is on private land! Ironically whilst filming this we met a lovely couple of Coventry that were on holiday following the itinerary we had suggested in our Brid and Scarborough videos, aside from the rain they were having a great time, was very nice to see! thanks for the great support, have an awesome weekend. I shall see you in Venice ♥️🇮🇹
