    The comment about values/colour is so true, my painting teacher used to always say the colours don't matter if your values are right, it'll read and never cared that all my paintings of people were green (colourblind lol) she'd just be like "I love your green palette, it's very 'you'" as long as my values read well... but she didn't know I was colourblind so I wonder what she thought about colour decisions 😅

    Thank you for your kind words Tabbi ❤️ I will definitely keep sharing my work with you all! We all have our strengths and weaknesses, I can't paint a landscape to save my life 😅 but if you want to get better at portraits. I'd recommend getting a really cheap sketchbook (so that there is no pressure) and fill it up with quick portrait sketches with ballpoint pen or pencil. You could use the site Line of Action to get timed portrait references. I did something like this a few years ago and I found it really helped! No one has to see this sketchbook, it's just for you 😄

    Hi! A shot in the dark here since I don't even know if you use varnishes for your art - - but you're one of the few artists I can find who uses acrylic gouache and experiments with different mediums so I thought I'd ask. Have you ever tried varnishing acrylic gouache? I know it doesn't necessarily need varnish, but. I'm getting into making art dolls and I've been toying with the idea of painting them with acrylic gouache paints. Which, of course, are matte, which I do like... But I'd also like to try making them NOT matte. The thing is, I'd really like to add some glossy effects over some areas which naturally tend to shine - eyes, lips, nose, forehead. Some less, some more. I've read that acrylic varnish supposedly works either mixed with acrylic gouache or layered on acrylic gouache, but I'm struggling to find documented examples of this effect. So I'm wondering if you've ever tried this or seen it done?

  • @emhuesart

    @emhuesart

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi there! I haven't tried varnishing acrylic gouache myself, but I have seen others do it and have always wanted to give it a try. I have seen people use gouache-specific varnish on paintings, and the result is beautiful- almost looks like an oil painting! But that is for regular gouache. For acrylic gouache, you should be able to use an acrylic varnish. I haven't tried it though, so maybe do some tests before attempting it on a doll. But I think it's totally possible and would really make eyes and lips pop! 😄

  • @whatever9554

    @@emhuesart Yeah gouache is so beautiful, I definitely want to try either regular gouache or acrylic gouache, though not sure yet if I'll end up using it on dolls 🤔 I've been learning about all kinds of paints lately and honestly I'm tempted to buy ALL of them 😅 I find mediums and varnishes super interesting so I'll definitely experiment with those.

    I definitely like the first one the best. I think its the expression. And can I say how strange it is to see you making these square like blobs of paint on the portrait but yet later it actually turns out to be a really good picture of someone??!! Unsure how that happens! Also on the first pic it was confusing when you first put down a red color on the hair but then later you painted it black? So why put the red down first? Does the red show through the black? I am very new to painting so this is a tad perplexing! I started a bullet journal the other day and I drew 2 horse heads yesterday. Do those count as heads? 😂 🐴 later today I will try painting them.

  • @emhuesart

    @emhuesart

    Жыл бұрын

    Thank you so much! Yes, the first head had the best expression, I completely agree! The reason I put the reddish color down first is because I almost use it as a roadmap for where I will put my darker colors. Because this is Acryl gouache the red won't impact the other layers, but it does peek through in certain areas, when left unpainted! I really like the warmth this gives to a painting, though it is not necessary! ❤️

    I don't understand. What is the difference between this acrylic based gouache and regular acrylic paint? Regular gouache is an opaque watercolor that can be re-wet, like watercolor paints. If these acrylic based gouache paints cant be re-wet, why are they called gouache? They seem no different from regular acylic paint. Can someone help me understand?

    Acrylic gouache dries matte, whereas acrylics can dry quite shiny. I have used all three mediums (acrylics, acryl gouache, and traditional gouache) and I much prefer acryl gouache over acrylics, but that's just a preference! As for why they are called gouache, when they act more like acrylics... I have no idea 😅 could be something to do with the pigments or the flat/matte appearance when they are laid down.

    @@emhuesart Thanks for that. I think these acrylic based so called "gouache" should be referred to as matte acrylics. Gouache is an opaque watercolor that dries matte and can be re-wet. These are very unique properties that makes them distinctly different from regular watercolor, and regular acrylic paints. The manufacturers of these acrylic based "gouache" are just causing confusion and should stop referring to their product as a gouache and should just call them what they are, matte acrylic paints.
