Eve of Destruction with Barry McGuire | Wrecking Crew Documentary Outtake

Фильм және анимация

Barry McGuire talks about how the Eve of Destruction became a hit. "Adler says 'let's do somethin' else. I had the words of Eve in my back pocket. I pulled them out and smoothed out the wrinkles, hung it on the music stand."

Barry is a dear friend of mine, that I have known for years. I'm a drummer, and I was blessed when I got to back him at a Christian concert that had a number of groups that were playing. When I first heard "Eve Of Destruction" back in the 60's I loved it, but never thought in a million years that Barry & I would become good friends later on in life!

Hi there Patrick. I am glad you posted about knowing Barry. He was saved by Jesus back in the 1970s I think and I have been wondering if he is still following Jesus. Does he have hymns and things like that somewhere online? message from Bruce in eastern Canada. I was saved in 1972.

The fact that this masterpiece of an anthemic tune was released publicly and went straight to #1 on the charts after only one take in the studio and then forever changed the Constitution of the United States of America with regards to the national voting age in the country speaks volumes!

It’s just as incredible as the original and Barry’s voice will knock you over TWICE. Older artists always lose the strength in their voice, but not him. I woke up in the middle of the night when I was seven and we were living in a hippie village in Northern California. That was the first time I heard Eve of Destruction.

I wrote that already in another chat...whatever! Can't say it often enough: I'm not from the U.S. and I'm a bit younger then these generation (Iam born after Vietnam), but I can feel each word in this song with all its power and emotions,.. so strong!!! AND I could scream it out so f* loud, right now. So in my opinion, if there is one thing which could rescue us from the current situation, then its this kinda music and its hearts which it needs to protest loud, and to shout out what we think, what we disagree with, and what we need to change. Never Give Up! Its never to late, also not in2020. Power, Love and Confidence from Germany, Peace!

Love the song, heard it played over Armed Forces Radio while aboard a Vietnam-bound troopship in mid-October, 1965 as we approached the island of Guam. That said, lowering the voting age to 18 is why we are in trouble. The 18-year-old mind is not developed enough or experienced enough to make sound voting decisions. I was a 19-year-old soldier on that troopship and I sure as hell had no business voting. "Youth is easily deceived because it is quick to hope.” ~ Aristotle

It took off because it told the truth as to what was going on in the world. With the 'Conflict' in Vietnam killing and wounding so many young Americans, 'Eve of Destruction' HAD to be played and listened to. My small town of less than 10,000 people suffered it's first death from the Vietnam War in 1965, the year this song was released. Things went downhill from there...

The song had initially been presented to The Byrds as a Dylanesque potential single, but they rejected it. The Turtles, another L.A. group which often recorded The Byrds' discarded or rejected material, recorded a version instead. Their version was issued as a track on their 1965 debut album It Ain't Me Babe, shortly before McGuire's version was cut; it was eventually released as a single and hit #100 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1970.

Hard for me to believe he did that on the fly . How did he have lyrics to it? How could he put those nuances on a dry read? I think they did a few run throughs...THEN on the first recorded take got it and stopped. Still impressive. You can count on one hand rock songs that mention serious topics of the day,and one finger that hit so many as Eve.

It's still a favorite. Prophetic as it gets and I'm glad it worked. But, lowering the voting age was a lousy idea and proof of that idiocy is apparent everywhere today and it's an inspiration for some states to lower it to 16. The voting age should be a minimum of 25 and it should be a requirement that a voter own real estate, or have a mortgage and pays State and Federal taxes. There are too many peeps who don't understand much more than rap lyrics and who live on government succor and are allowed to vote. A nation should be run and managed like a business and that means you don't let the unequipped and unskilled make any decisions beyond how many burgers they'll buy for lunch on any given day.

Oh yeah. I realize that. I was referring to the '60s. Eve Of Destruction was the only thing that did well on the secular charts. I had the good fortune of seeing him perform with Terry Talbot in Fresno back in 2014 at the Tower Theatre. Great show. By "powers that be" I meant the record companies and radio stations that blocked his efforts.
