This video was posted in 2012, so it was recorded some time before then, and Barry thought it was more relevant at that time than when it was recorded in 1965. As I write this comment, we're just beginning 2024, and the song is even more relevant today.

The eastern world, it is explodin', Violence flarin', bullets loadin', You're old enough to kill but not for votin', You don't believe in war, but what's that gun you're totin', And even the Jordan river has bodies floatin', But you tell me over and over and over again my friend, Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction. Don't you understand, what I'm trying to say? And can't you feel the fears I'm feeling today? If the button is pushed, there's no running away, There'll be no one to save with the world in a grave, Take a look around you, boy, it's bound to scare you, boy, And you tell me over and over and over again my friend, Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction. Yeah, my blood's so mad, feels like coagulatin', I'm sittin' here, just contemplatin', I can't twist the truth, it knows no regulation, Handful of Senators don't pass legislation, And marches alone can't bring integration, When human respect is disintegratin', This whole crazy world is just too frustratin', And you tell me over and over and over again my friend, Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction. Think of all the hate there is in Red China! Then take a look around to Selma, Alabama! Ah, you may leave here, for four days in space, But when your return, it's the same old place, The poundin' of the drums, the pride and disgrace, You can bury your dead, but don't leave a trace, Hate your next door neighbor, but don't forget to say grace, And you tell me over and over and over and over again my friend, You don't believe we're on the eve of destruction. No, no, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction. Songwriters: P. F. Sloan

This was the first cover song I learned with my new guitar - a Harmony - in 1966. I lived in Paris then, and played this song often on a favorite corner in the Latin Quarter, in a weekly coffee house show at ""The Catacombs", and at the Christmas party of a NY bank on the Champs Elysees. I write a lot of my own protest songs now (as a 74-year old "submerging artist") and haven't played this one in a long, long time. I might just bring it back into my repertoire, with the updated lyrics that Barry McGuire wrote. A great song, and very much in sync with my guiding mantra: "The pen is mightier than the sword, and a song is mightier still". Thanks, Barry, for reviving this song!

F. Sloan
All the young people should listen to the words, it’s very relevant for today’s world.

I am watching this on the morning of Xmas eve. So, so powerful; Barry is still a master. I was a big fan when this when it was a radio hit in the mid 60's. Thank you for uploading; I will subscribe to your channel, right now.

I saw Barry do this years ago on PBS and I thought it is true not much has changed.... I was a teen when he first sang it and now I am an old lady 😢
And I STILL have my 45rpm record and it plays well! Just like him!
PF Sloan wrote this song at 19 years ols. Barry did make it famous though. You should check out Sloans version too..
The maniacs will destroy Us all so they can retain their power. "An evil enemy will destroy its own country, to rule over the ashes"- Sun Tsu.
