EV Roadtrip: Everything Electric Sydney to Kangaroo Island - Part 1

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The latest EV roadtrip for my Poliestar 2 Model Year 2024 Long-range Single-motor RWD.
I head from the 2024 Everything Electric Sydney show back home to Kangaroo Island - a round trip of 3200km.
In this 800km leg we leave the Sydney Olympic Park Pullman Hotel and travel to the AmpCharge station at Phesants Nest for breakfast and a top up. Then we go to the Yass Tesla Supercharger, followed by the Albury Tesla V4 Supercharger.
Finally we arrive at the Central Deborah Hotel in Bendigo, Victoria for an overnight charge, followed by a short ASMR walk around the beautiful downtown.
Stay tuned for the Part 2 and the second leg to South Australia and Kangaroo Island.
Not sponsored by anyone, but did receive the CB UHF radio to review.

Google maps in the Polestar 2 is your bible regarding destination SOC. Yes, it's conservative and you should generally always arrive with higher SOC than predicted, but it will factor in driving efficiency, speed limits and terrain etc of the route planned. Driver display simply applies your recent driving efficiency to the remaining charge and is indicative only. Happy and safe travels! 😃

Yes, having Google integrated makes doing roadtrips and finding chargers easy! I can’t imagine not having proper route planning in a car anymore. I do use PlugShare to double check things and plan my trips initially on A Better Route Planner. Thanks heaps and thanks for following along!

Awesome vid. Did a road trip in a rented Polestar 2 in the UK last year so know it well. Awesome car, so nice to drive, decent range and planted on the road. UK charging network however... meh

Thanks and thanks for watching and commenting - really appreciated! Yes the Polestar is a lovely drive. The network is pretty good here in Australia, I’ve never had any real issues and it’s getting better.

You do not need to wait for the car to say done before disconnecting the cable. Also dont need to press the unlock cable on the screen if you don't want to, you can just use the button just beside the charging port to both stop the charge and unlock the cable. Just press it once and wait a second or two.

Yes - thanks for the tip. For some reason I like to stop it charging on the infotainment screen and not just push the button at the charger - it's a weird karma thing! lol - thanks for watching and commenting!

Hi, always cool to see your Polestar again and again. It's really beautiful. What incredible weather, it's still winter here in Europe haha. Enjoy the sun. In fact, what are you doing, a huge road-trip across the country, or are you doing stages each time from home? I'm sure you've answered the question, but I only watch a few clips/snippets of your videos each time. Extended channel surfing haha

Thank you very much! And thanks very much for watching my friend! I am based and work on Kangaroo Island but have just done three long roadtrips on the mainland since getting the car. I am lucky to have some leave from work and also can work from the road.

In comparison to what you were paying for gas and the MPG you got vs. cost of charging and how far you can go on a KW(I think thats the right term) what is the cost?

I got asked how much compared to petrol it cost to drive my Polestar RWD from Kangaroo Island to the Everything Electric Sydney show. Depends what car, but according to Gemini AI, the estimated cost of driving a 2024 Corolla for 3200 kilometers on the highway with petrol at $2 per liter would be: 2.0L: $366 Hybrid: $326 For interest’s sake, a Mazda BT-50 would cost $598. My Polestar trip cost $267, but could have been closer to $200 using cheaper, slower 50kw chargers.

I feel that everything over 10% at a charging stop is a misscalculating by me on the previous charger. 😅 Except if it's winter and risk of bad weather, then I aim at around 20% to be safe if there is an accident or a closed road.

@@volvodashcam yes I should probably aim for 10 per cent, particularly at an overnight stay where I know the charger will work. At the moment I am trying to arrive with 20 per cent generally as a safety margin but my car is just so efficient I always seem to arrive with 30 per cent.

I don't think I have ever gone below 15 per cent - ever! I would love to see my car take 200kw but need to be brave and drain it first!

@@Stan-at-KangarooIslandTV Maybe you can aim for lower percentage if you also check what charger is the last one before the one you aim at. And if the car hasn't change the predicted percentage to lower you can keep going to that charger. Like having a backup plan if the car consumed more than predicted. I mean, if there is a charger before that you pass with 30% and only have like 50km left to the one you aim for you are totally good, but if you are down to 15% it might be good to stop even if you probably would make 50km on 15% in the new Polestar. ;) Also in some Norwegian test last week a P2 did go 84km after it hit 0%! I think it was somewhat downhill but still that is a lot. So there are a bit of margin below 0% as well. ;)
