Kangaroo Island TV

Kangaroo Island TV

This channel is the life Kangaroo Island resident and journalist, Stan Gorton, who enjoys getting around Australia in his long-range Polestar 2 electric car showing how easy and nice it is to go on EV road trips.

Kangaroo Island or “KI” as locals know it is located just south of Adelaide in South Australia. My early videos are from the Far South Coast NSW, Narooma and Bermagui area.

There is lots more planned for Kangaroo Island TV with a view to expanding viewership. Aiming to get to 1,000 subscribers soon. Please join me on this journey and comment as to how I can improve the videos.

You know I asked SeaLink that exact question five years ago when they announced the 2 new boats, which are being made in Indonesia with “efficient” diesel engines, but they said electric ferries did fit their model of quick turn arounds, but I’m sure there’s a solution out there. They just needed a faster charger lol. I spoke to the owner of the Bentley, from memory it was about 10 years old so virtually a classic, he drove it from his farm near Melbourne to celebrate his 80th birthday on KI.

@@Stan-at-KangarooIslandTV Interesting as I took my new Kona EV across on the Spirit to Tassie after picking it up at the dealer in Melbourne and they didn't do that to me and I was mixed in with other cars the only thing they did was put a EV sticker type thing on my car which luckily came off very easily. If it's worry about Lithium batteries then what about all the phones and laptops that are onboard every trip. But also what happens when say the first Sodium-Ion batteries appear the owners of those have a case and can say sorry this isn't a Lithium battery.

Hey! Yes it seems pointless but I have been assured the temp checks and special parking won't apply on the new ferries coming next year. SeaLink does actually make you declare lithium ion scooters and bikes now too, but not laptops. Glad you are enjoying your new Kona. Coincidently I have a loaner while my Polestar is being serviced/repaired and I just picked up a brand new Kona this morning with only 500km on it. Cowell to adelaide via the ferry, the total trip time is the same as if you drove the whole way, and its about $200+ more expensive than driving a petrol car the entire way. according to the website, the fare is $200 per car, plus $44 per adult, one way. Add in a $25 car clean and for 2 adults thats a bit more than $300. it says that it takes 2.5 hours duration. Wallaroo to adelaide is about 2 hrs and 161km. so cowell to adelaide via ferry total trip time about 5 hrs including wait times. if u did the trip in a petrol car, then the cost of the driving part would be (assuming 10lt/100km) about $25..so the total would be about $335. in an eletric vehicle itd be somewhere between $310 and $335. if you were to drive from cowell to adelaide on petrol alone, thats approx 500km and 5 hrs..so roughly the same number of hours for the trip, but itll cost you 500km on the odometer and in fuel, and you wont need to clean the salt off the car. but you do risk an accident and you are required to be concentrating the whole time. at 10lt/100km, that fuel cost would be about $85..the odometer cost is debatable- lets say its $50. So the total would be about $135. Cowell to Wallaroo is 4 hrs drive time, and 380km. so itll cost you 380km on the odometer, and about 40 litres of fuel - about $70 worth. So you get a 1-1.5 hr trip duration benefit, at a cost of $250 or so. i guess that the argument is: what is the 'effort' of driving for 2.5 hours versus relaxing on a ferry for 2.5 hours, worth?..is it $200-$250?. for public use it feels like a real line ball decision to me but might be worth it if its ferrying industrial equipment that cant travel at the road speed limits.

@@timn4481 hey Tim! Wow great comprehensive summary. You are all correct and the cost would have been even loss for me in an EV. I guess you only do it for the novelty or maybe like you say for some heavy transport practical reasons. Now that I have ticked it off the bucket list, I won’t do it again. One ferry that does makes sense and that I would use again is the Queenscliffe to Sorrento ferry that cuts out Melbourne. That one I found well worth it! Thanks for watching and commenting!

It’s an interesting question and I think having windows down when driving slow but up when going fast is the best strategy for fuel efficiency. Have you stayed in any of the campgrounds which have a 'ensuite' type situation where you have your own private bathroom as part of the fee? Charles(Charles on Charge FB) stayed in them on his sojourn over to the AEVA event last year in in Perth. That little fridge looks very cool, no pun intended. Not talking to yourself, talking to your audience or thinking out loud whichever you prefer...considering we have Tiktok as well as KZread think people would know. :) One suggestion not sure if you have a lapel mic or not with wind fuzzy thing so that can hear you better as closer to you while your camera is filming.

Ps Charles on Charge is a great name, I was thinking of changing the name of my channel to something more EV oriented, but I may just leave it. I will look into getting a microphone, but I like the simplicity of just hopping out and turning on the good old simple GoPro. I do have a foam cover for it now that helps in the wind. Thank you for sharing such beautiful images. It reminds me of Greece, but with drier panoramas from southern Italy or even the Maghreb... stunning! Australia is truly magnificent with such landscapes.

Oddily KZread didn't promote this for me into my recommended which it usually does. Glad I found it though. See you're only about 90 odd subs away from the 1000 milestone!! How much clearance does your P2 have anyway and were the off-road bits you went on bad as they didn't look too bad for 'off-road'? My Kona I know as per either specs or review I saw is 6" or 150mm clearance so if your P2 is about the same means I could go there one day as well. First comment to say more than "First Comment" as well. :)

Hey! Glad you found it too! Yup the P2 has 151mm so the same. The road down to the jetty was a little soft and sandy with raised centre bits, but not too bad. The road in was worse with lots of pot holes. I just went slow. Front wheel drive can actually be better for off road or snow, less so with EVs because you don’t have the weight of the fossil engine. Anyway, the Kona should handle dirt roads just fine and probably has a bit softer ride than the P2. I’d love to get the Polestar 3 one day with its air suspension, 200mm clearance, heaps of space and V2L. That would make a great road trip and camping vehicle but probably not as fun to drive as the P2. Can’t wait to hit 1000 subs and I’m going be loading up the rest of these trip videos soon, so stay tuned! Thanks for your support!

I noticed they put the EV to the front of the ferry so they can push it off the front when it catches fire. I’m new to your channel, I’ve seen you in the Ludicrous Feed chat, and I’m liking your content . I’m definitely considering a trip to Kangaroo Island in my Tesla 3LR. Cheers.

Welcome aboard! Thanks heaps. Regarding the ferry, it’s something along those lines. I’ve been able to live with the rules so far, and hopefully when the new ferries arrive next year, the same EV restrictions won’t apply. Or so I have been told. Anyway, you should head on over for sure. With your car you should be able to do a full loop on just one charge.

What do you do if you get stuck in the middle of nowhere and you run out of battery, Stan? Gosh, cutting it fine with 17% and 80km left in the tank. That pizza looked amazing though. Just reward for so long driving. Take care out there, my friend. 🙂 Pat that Twiggy dog for me. ♥

Good question! Push the magic button on the roof next to the rear vision and a tow truck should magically appear - lol. Seriously though there is always roadside assist. You can run out of petrol too, but I guess in that case you could go get a jerry can. One of my favourite KZreadrs - Bjorn in Norway - purposefully runs cars down to zero and then sometimes uses a couple of big EcoFlow type portable batteries. Basically the idea is not to run of battery, and worst case just pull in somewhere with just a normal plug you can use like a campground or roadhouse etc Thanks heaps for watching and Twig says hi 👋
