EV ETX-18SP Review With Driver Upgrade

Ойын-сауық

As it was difficult to determine the value vs the performance online from reviews, I bought two of the subwoofers and not only tested them but upgraded the drivers as well. EV Electro Voice ZLX-15P PA tops, Seismic Audio New Madrid 18" Drivers ETX 18SP Subwoofers. Used for South Chicagoland DJanotomus.COM mobile events.
Video Corrections: I meant 8 driver fasteners, not 18
Total swap time was 20 minutes per subwoofer enclosure.
There are three Phillips wood screws on either side of the grill and it comes right off.
There are two square-shaped metal bars, etched into the front of the box which pull right off. No tools needed.
There are then 8 Phillips Machine Screws holding the EV Driver in place.
Last, there are two wires in a push to release configuration (very easy) to disconnect the driver.
Should you pull out the wire harness clip that connects on the amp, it is the left two of the four pins. The right two pins do not produce sound in my test.
Reverse procedure to assemble! Enjoy. I will be making a walkthrough or video with more pictures to help in the very near future so stay tuned! Thank you for watching and or reading!

UPDATE! Used the setup for two outdoor events since the build, each one over 8 hours of continuous high level (but not unrealistic) use and they performed extremely well. I received many compliments on how crisp, clear, loud and deep they are. No issues with power, clipping, protection mode, hookup, rattling, port noise, nada. Amps are cool to the touch even playing dubstep and riddim at 80%+ volume for hours on end (ZLX-15Ps were much warmer but did not overload or have any issues as well). Very happy with the EV products and driver upgrade with Seismic Audio. I am still recommending it personally if it fits your needs etc. The second event we played for a July 4th party and played everything from baby shark, to classic rock, alternative and deep house with fantastic clarity. Again, many compliments. Next use is for an indoor wedding in a very acoustically challenged VFW hall with over 100 people, 40 ft ceilings, concrete walls and floor and about 100' x 350'. I may be adding a set of JBL PRX825Ws for stronger mid-range and coverage. Stay tuned!

Hi Mark, glad to hear this! I ended up spray painting the surface of the cones a matte black which took care of the color mismatch. Just a light coat did the trick and I will be making a custom decal for the caps. The cones had a deep grey/purplish color and it was quite visible through the screen, but now does not.

So I finally got a chance to air my upgraded subs out, I used 4 tops and two subs and still had to turn the subs down, my tops are crossed over @ 100hz and so are the subs, man this upgrade is the bomb. My go to tops are the zlx 15p bt and rcf hd 12 As' the 12 A is a sleeper I like sound quality and coupled with the zlx that can be a little harsh on the upper treble the rcf s' can smooth the frequency out once you get the right blend between the two pairs. Most happy with the butter smooth bass at any level now with no clipping. I can't thank you enough for the idea. Bless you bro. DJ Marvell

Hey Doug, I just purchased 2 of the ETX 18SP subs last week. You are right, the boxes they come in are definitely made of some heavy duty cardboard and had to use a razor knife to get mine open too, lol. After getting them unboxed and set up, I used the two QSC k12 tops I have here at the house, (The rest of my QSC speakers are in storage) for my first quick test with both of the ETX18SP hooked up. I Gotta say, for a very brief test (Did not want to bother either of my neighbors for very long) I was impressed with the power they produce. Never turned em up past +10 db, but Man they can pump out some serious Thump! However, I can appreciate this video and your recommended Subwoofer upgrade, Cuz I too, Was a bit skeptical of the many reviews mentioning the speakers shutting down after extensive use at higher volume. I'll take a look at Seismic Audio New Madrid 18" drivers, That is definitely an upgrade I will consider. You seem very confident with your experience at large events that demand extended periods at high volumes, and I can appreciate that too. After seeing the magnet on these stock EV speakers in this video, I gotta say they do look thin and weak compared to other Subs I have seen. As for the pair of QSC KW181 Subs I use now, Those are fantastic subs that have truly stood the test of time and are stock from the factory. My entire PA system is active QSC speakers and subs. However, I was looking into expanding the bottom end of my PA system for the bigger outdoor events that seem to really soak up the low frequencies very quickly yand these EV subs caught my attention with the advertised 1800 watt I was presented with a great deal on a new set of these ETX18SP subs I just couldn't turn down. Only paid $2350 for a brand new set with full warranty, and also have an opportunity to purchase two more of these subs and 4 fitted covers for $2496 from the same seller. I think that is a good price considering I see them on Ebay for $1499 each, and the covers are $69 each. The invoice is for 2of the ETX18SP subs for $1150 each and 4 of the ETX18SP covers for $49 each, All brand new with free shipping and full warranty. I can't pass that kinda deal up. I don't like mismatching anything that goes up front for my PA system, but with an 1800 watt rating I can throw a black sheet over them. I'm gonna subscribe to your channel and keep an ear out for any more suggestions you might have. Thanks for the helpful information, I'm always digging around looking for ways to maximize my equipment to get the most out of it that I can

Seismic saved me some money on the speaker but shipping is still $181 per speaker. So hopefully the $200 savings per speaker is worth it.

The frequency response and price point of these drivers should satisfy most home theater applications. I would focus on the cabinet design and personally I would use 4 for the space (provided dimensions). Perhaps two dual front firing enclosures, and two 2,500 watt amps, frequency 25-125 Khz for starters.

The low end on your subs sounds fantastic in this video! I'm in the same situation but with EV's lighter EKX18SP subwoofer. I need more bass extension as well. All of the drivers I've looked at have a lower sensitivity rating. I don't know if that would give me less overall volume or not. What is the BEST driver that you would suggest I upgrade it with. Hi E Dub! Not exactly, the XLRs are straight through. However, the subwoofer has an excellent built-in DSP which allows fine tuning of the subwoofer which is perfect for most applications. Including but not limited to crossover, input amplification, reverse polarization, cardiod (when using multiple subs), etc. The tops are adjustable too, including a subwoofer setting which alters the bass output to save the grunt work for the bottoms and working the tops less harder. I have to admit, this is great but I could use some more mid, like a kick bin. Therefore, I will be likely investing in some Dual 15s as well to achieve a full range system. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

Hi Kyler, the original drivers were a disappointment. Please keep in mind, I bought these at full retail price because I am a firm supporter of this brand and products. I am a Basshead and I dabble in many other applications and projects including car audio. The drivers that come in this cabinet delicate and flimsy. The drivers I had laying around that I put in here are heavier, but also much more heavy duty, and also much more responsive on the lower frequencies. The cabinet, amplifier, casters, pretty much everything else is excellent on the speaker. The front grille can rattle a little bit but that's an easy fix. You will find reviews where people mention the sound degrades over an extended use of high volume. That's because the speakers start to overheat. With the new drivers, this does not happen. I have continuously used these at almost full power for 10 hours at a time. The amplifier remained cool, no kidding. Not even warm. I would buy these again and do the same driver swap before I moved forward to the QSCs because they also have lower quality drivers but higher end cabinets and amplifiers. The QSCs are also more susceptible to be pushed towards the failure point. The EVs have a higher quality protection system in my personal opinion. I hope everything above makes sense, I'm not downing any of these other solutions but I'm just speaking on behalf of the experience with what we've done here. I am extremely happy with the upgrade we did, and these things still continue to surpass my expectations. If you'd like any more specific information videos pictures feel free to contact me directly. @@zeekhernandez9419 great question! With so many options, it comes down to your budget, availability and some trial & error. I love coming across a how-to video that gives me exactly what I need to expect, but the SAs are likely to be discontinued moving forward. If you drive them to the "edge" all the time, then I would get some heavier ferrite subs, like the SA's that can handle more heat, for longer durations of time. Which RMS or Continuously can handle the 1,800W rating of the amps.I was a little skeptical that those tiny amps were really pushing that much power, but a recent event with a HUGE Dubstep headliner (Toadface) we used them as monitors and they even tripped the 20A breaker (testing time) leading me to believe they are consuming and outputting that rating after all. Still, ran for several days at near clip levels, those darn things did not give out.... lol Sorry I may of rambled there, just wanted to share some more recent experience as well. After the break in period the amps in these really shine and the bass is super punchy and lower being set at 100hz as well. DJ Marvell, AWESOME!!! I just checked those drivers out and I could only imagine how well those are holding up! Thank you for the feedback and support! I do have a recent update after years of banging those full tilt (well, the DJs did). Both drivers, amps and hardware in near mint condition with the small exception of a crossbar inside the box coming loose. It supports the top and bottom from caving in, I believe. It started rattling at a gig towards the end and was drowned out at higher volume (fortunately). Only 1 of two started this, so I opened both, dabbed a little E6000 on each end, slipped it back in place and drilled a undersized 1/8" hole on both sides from the outside of the box right into the bar and simply inserted two 3" stainless screws and WHOLAH!!! No more rattle and I'm positive that was the weakest point so we're probably good for another 3 years! lol. Cheers!

    5 жыл бұрын

Hello twan 41, I am so glad you asked! I replaced two Rockville RBG18FAs with the EVs. The Rockville's are truly the best bang for the buck however fell short in reliability and other areas. The Rockville's arrived damaged, the enclosure was practically made of pressed paper. The screws were not strong, the units were very heavy and overall cheaply built. I did not even understand how they were "folded horn" designed. They were essentially front firing subwoofers. Also, these rattled (poor quality screws and insulation) and have NO protection if overdriven. I lost two subwoofers during an event. They were fried! And the capacitors starting walking out of the amplifier boards. One amp also fried due to this. I had to completely rebuild these which I used Rockville components, which cost me over $300 after 5 uses. Then I sold right after, both for $500 which was market value just last week. The EVs are much more durable and higher quality. I am going to test them and see if they can withstand reasonable abuse, time and elements this summer, especially with the upgraded drivers, Stay tuned!

I promise you, switching from the factory-loaded EV driver to the one I used yielded a SIGNIFICANT increase in output performance as well as frequency response. There are SO MANY different variations to consider, however, we have been using these almost EVERY since and in EXTREME abusive applications with NO issues and nothing but compliments. I LOVE these models and designs, but the driver was a bottleneck to really unlock the quality of the cabinet, amplifier, and the DSP within.
