EV Conversion How To : Adapt a Hyper9 Electric Motor to a Volkswagen Karmann Ghia or Bug or Beetle
Ойын-сауық
In this episode of Dissrepair, we show you how to adapt a Hyper9 Electric Motor to a Volkswagen Transaxle to start your EV conversion of your vintage volkswagen.
This task requires only ordinary hand tools and should take less than 1 hour, with the tools, fasteners and components handy (and a couple of friends too)
Check out our website for more details.

Why does this swap use flywheel and clutch?
@dissrepair

The motor utilizes the conventional transmission and can be driven in a single gear or shifted manually. Check out the driving video in this link kzread.info/dash/bejne/eJuEk8Grd62oqMY.html

A conventional clutch with an aluminium alloy flywheel sounds like a recipe for a rather short life.

I think this channel is way ahead of where we will be in a few years. The conversion industry will be a beast of its own. Great content.

"Karmann Electra". Too funny! And thanks for baring it all in your video!
Gave us like 30 seconds of the most satisfying bit at the end!
That is a very neat installation.
its amazing intersting hopefully you have more video like that
Carmen Electra!! 😄👍
I’m in the process of installing the EV West kit on an AC50. Would you mind letting me know what torque you used on the flywheel bolts? Thanks so much!
Very nice, but administrations here in Europe are doing donkey to certificate this absolute excellent reconversions.
If you heat the hub in an oven it will slide right on. Interference fit is a pain no matter how you do it.
nice music at the end
No blowtorch and hammer, much better then some other builders 🙂
I WISH YOU SUCCESS 👍😍🥰
Electric motor armature shafts are usually not rated for much of a thrust load. I wonder if the roller bearings in the electric motor have a high enough thrust rating for the thrust applied when the clutch is applied and released.

They seem to do very well before the hyper 9 the net gain Warp 9 was popular they all went together the same way and bearing failure is rare even after many years, see my KZread
Saw electric conversion VW bug back in 1978 in San Francisco. I guess this has been around quite awhile.

That might have been one of Mike Brown conversion kits, he started back then
I wanna know if this can be done to my 1998 Honda Prelude though
I would love to have an EV Karmann Ghia. I would also like to have an EV Nash Metro.
What can I say about the Hyper9 engine, you can customize any car. Even they can build electric go-karts.😁

It’s super versatile
you can also make Mustang 2005 v6 electric like that
Where did you get the motor? Off from the recycled EV or bought new from the manufactures?
What about all of the various kit cars which were built on the VW bug platform?
is that a standard vw clutch if so 200mm or 180mm ..cheers
@demotors070161 is there a thrust bearing built into the hyper9? I imagine there will be some axial force when depressing the clutch, and I don't see any thrust bearings externally in the set up. Wondering if this has been an issue for you and this build at all?
do you have to measure the distance between the bell housing adapter and make it equal to the original motor bell housing?
Interesting concept. But what's with the Audio? Voice is extremely soft then the rift comes in at Max volume.
How much for the kit in the usa
Ok, I've busted two pieces of all thread trying to get my adapter on. It seems to start straight, but gets really tights and I'm not anywhere close to the spacer. Are there any other tips or tricks to get that adapter on? Not sure where to go next. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

@CountryRoadCycles

@@PatrickFitzgerald-ge2hw I didn't solve it yet, although I did find that the groove for the key was not clean and had to be filed for the key to fit correctly. Going to try again this weekend with heat. If that doesn't work I'm going to see about having it pressed in by a machine shop. Hope you have better luck.
Can you put links to where you purchased your parts

It’s a hard question to answer without some specifics about the vehicle and goals for the vehicle. Contact Flashdrivemotors.com and they can answer that question! Thanks for watching
why couldn't that same setup fit flipped around & mid mounted in a 914 in front of a 5 speed?
@dissrepair

It would work the same way!
Nice video but the music was WAY TO LOAD and annoying.
I really don't think that output shaft adapter needs to fit that tightly on the motor shaft. I've worked with all sorts of industrial couplings (which is essentially what that is) and they just slide on.
@jonn7877

He could have heater the adapter then it would have slipped on to the motor shaft. That's the way I did it with my Hyper9 motor and it worked well.

"Chucks Garage" Usually electric motor couplings only have to transmit rotational torque through them. They typically use a Lovejoy coupler to take care of minor alignment issues. That adapter will also see the rotational load and any imbalance of the clutch and flywheel, and the thrust load from the throw-out bearing when applying the clutch. IMO it needs to be an interference fit.

Too much to be a cool way to get a old bug with no engine back on the road because buying a new engine is cheaper. You could probably buy a new engine and trans for the price of the EV motor.

1:30 You damaged the bearings hammering the shaft. NEVER EVER use a hammer on bearings. The inner and outer rings get markings (damage) of the balls by the axial force applied.

He seems clever, but not intelligent.
You could make the assembly much easier by put the motor straight up: better view better results.
😜
What's with the dam music?
I’d love to see the transmission just bypassed completely. Unnecessary complexity and failure point in an EV.

You're missing the point: ease of conversion. It's literally just a motor swap. Nothing I'd do to ruin the value of a classic car, but you do you. Heck, you can even get a couple of hundred bucks for the old engine to offset the multiple $1000s of dollars for the EV motor kit + batteries! 🙄

Show it running.
I almost bought one of them it was like 500 horsepower capable or something like that I started doing math on the battery pack that would take the run it at that point you might as well just buy a Tesla
Just the conversion kit all for the low-low price of 21k delivered 😅🤣😂🫡
