Nice job! Looks like your figured out the hydraulic pretty quickly. I kept expecting you to saw into a log stop (like I did on my 3rd log). That is a seriously long sawmill! I have an HD36 manual with 16' of track. I like your web site too, by the way.

You got the log loader on the wrong side of the deck or you need to switch places with the log stops and log dawg. You need the log stops to stop and keep logs from rolling off deck. The 1 log dawg want work that good. Just noticed it was backwards.

Tom Maze Yeah it is totally backwards. The guy has been warned but he likes it this way. I just hope no one gets hurt if a log rolls off the back side.

The cut you made at 23:50 could have been your second cut at 11:45 and would have saved one log turning. Also the slab you cut at 18:48 had a board in it, should have made an upper cut and then the board cut. The mill looks to be set up very well, in fact a super nice job. After several logs you'll learn many extra 'tricks' and have an abundance of enjoyment. Good luck, thumbs up! ....13

Do you saw commercially, if so do you have much demand for long timbers or boards?

plus when you lift a 28 foot log, it will fall off your loaders, because they aren't centered.

Maine Fiber Tools It's configured for the "average" log of 8-16ft. I have other equipment for loading the long stuff.

Tom made your exactly right noticed that first thing while mill needs a 180 turn around and log loader switched to other side. As for the sawing few min or mistakes but that's learned from experience. Norwood builds dang fine mill in my opinion.

Thane Grooms Not sure what pics your looking at but I grew up in and around mills and I don't mean to sound like a troll but you have to use common sense. For one log loader load on log it rolls across mill and the log stops catch log in this video they are same side as log loader placing log over top of them. your useing your log dog as a log stop that isn't it's intention. Also log load and log skid is getting sawdust blown out all over the sawdust is supposed to go out opposite from loader and skids away from your millwork. It's you that needs to Google proper sawing setup and technic.

Thane Grooms I DoD retook at Norwoods demo it's true that you match there set up however it does not make it right. I contacted Norwood of this issue as it's wrong to mislead people that lack experience down the wrong path. If this is a design flaw it needs corrected or it may just be their mistake in demonstrating and they should make it right. So I make this appology as this problem isn't your fault but Norwoods I only hope it gets corrected it will make thing run much smoother and far less work and trouble.

I forgot to mention in same video demonstrations they show the manual log loader in the right way in proper position loading logs why the difference is beyond me but it's wrong and misleading.

It actually works very well. The side you work on is free of tripping hazards, logs, sawdust, etc. for pulling boards off and putting on dollies, trucks, cant cut piles. Norwood didn't do it "wrong"... they did it different and after using it in this configuration, I can't imagine it being any better. With all things there are always compromises.

Tom Maze you are correct but as Thane Grooms states Norwood shows it wrong in their demostration videos. I contacted them about this and I think a lot of others should as well. Its not right to mislead inexperienced customers of their products. This issue can cause injury as well as damage the mill not to mention a ton of extra work with sawdust all over your log loader and logs waiting to go into the mill.

Not to mention the carriage drive chain is right under where you are loading the logs! One small knot, or branch catching on the drive chain is going to mess some stuff up! The log you loaded almost came off due to the single hydraulic stop. Once you have your cant, drop your dogs all the way down so you don't have to keep adjusting them as you go! There is no need to have them up once you are squared up. NICE TOY i'd be like a kid in the candy store. lol

Of all the top sawmill companies, Norwood is the most common one to do goofy stuff in demonstrations as well as sawmill shootouts. Please listen to the advice given here as it is sound advice. Please don't let stubborness get you or another hurt plus at minimum make the job of milling more difficult.

Your dogs and hydraulic turner are on backwards. The log rolls into the dogs, not ping pong back off the turner into them.

Maine Fiber Tools It's configured just the same as every other HD36. There are trade-offs... most of which are about having a clear workspace on the far side of the mill and ejecting sawdust on the opposite side... among others.

I seen all I need to in the first 30 seconds, I can see the frame is stamped out of tin, light gage sheet metal,, funny how all brands of these mills have become a big fad, and the price they charge the value is not at all in any of them,, they are all a big joke, but hay if I was a crock id be rich too

That's Galvanized Steel... and each 4 foot plate is heavy as hell. The 28 interlocking plates are stronger than the same weight in channel steel. Tin is a soft metal not much harder than lead. Now you know...

they look flimsy but like most engineered products, looks can be deceiving. The dimples in the metal actually stiffen it and they rails act like girders instead of beams. it allows you to use thicker cross sections (stiffer) with less weight. It is actually a brilliant design feature not a cheap knock off. The shiny color is from the galvanizing.

as a welder and mfg all my life sure not a unit I would conceder buying, or recommending, the more I have researched this make the more I don't like it, they use steel zinc coated bolts on adjustment parts locks that need to move many times daily that will rust, instead of stainless steel, I have seen what happens to engendered rails in many other things, and far from stiff for what is needed I also see how the saw frame flexs, and for what they charge that value is by far not in it

There is a video that shows how the frame supported 5 tons of logs ... it is well engineered ... but different than the ways you do things ... progress moves forward and doesn't look back ... Remember the Stone Age tools ...
