You're so right that the winner isn't always the best or most beautiful song... the winner tends to be one that most people LIKE, the highest common denominator - and Fairytale was a prime example of that. However, individual tastes mean that those with a more niche market or styling tend to score a little less. Every year there are 4 or 5 really stand out songs that will only finish mid-table. When you've finished your runners-up run through you should go and watch some full shows and find those hidden gems :). Oh, and I'm another one who can't wait for you to get to the 2004 runner-up - Zeljko Joksimovic from Serbia :)

That was my first year watching and still maybe my favorite. Still listen to Estonia, Armenia, Romania, and occasionally Israel from that year. Amaziiiinnngg. Iceland second in one of the toughest years! And yes, that's their best position besides another second place in 1999, but in 2009 they obtained more points. I don't know if I like it more than "Fairytale" but I can see me rewatching this in the future and I haven't rewatched "Fairytale" because it's so iconic that it bores me a little of having heard pieces of it in "top 10 winners".

This is going back a bit BUT as you know... 2nd place usually is a great song. You should check out The United Kingdom 1998 - Imaani... She came 2nd. Maybe the last time the uk sent a "cool" song for the time period. Not 2nd place but the uk 1996, 1997, 1999 all great too... Then it went wrong haha I'm sure you might already know their 1996 entry but you won't realise it was from ESC ;p it reached the USA!

My facial expressions must have matched yours Jake by watching this! I can't remember this song or maybe I didn't watched it that year. But what a beautiful song and performance. Thank you for this :-)
Been waiting for this reaction!
One of my favorite songs ever on Eurovision. And , gosh, how can someone be that beautiful)))
That's my favorite Eurovision song ever! She should won.
Greatest Icelandic song ever!!! Amazing singing and beautiful performance !Love from Montenegro!
An singer from Iceland with a crystal-clear voice

I adore her
This is one of my favourite eurovision songs. That winter, xmas fantasy, the dress were so solid as an environment to the song and the lyrics. I still love it
I love Scandinavian entries. Sometimes, singers who do not win various competitions achieve much more than the winners do. It was a beatutiful song.

But Iceland isn't a part of Scandinavia ;)
Beatiful composition!!! I feel it inside the veins. Its the true !!! Wondeful night jake. ✋
This is one of if not my all-time favourite entry from Iceland. This was my winner that year.
I'm rewatching this both to listen to the song and to see your reaction hahaha.
Jake cant wait your reaction for one of the best song ever at competition Serbia 2004

Vojin Stoskovic It was Serbia and Montenegro back in 2004, an independent Serbia didn't debut until the 2007 contest. But it is my favourite song from the year

difcymru Ofcourse, and Montenegro too but i mentioned Serbia cause Željko is Serb. I agree with u, one of the best songs at competition
Hadise - Düm tek tek Eurovision 2009 Turkey
I remember her very well and still love this song. And not only this - Johanna has a lot of good songs, and she sings them so beautifully, so especially. Pure, sincere girl.
2009 was the first year I watched Grand Final on TV and I have to admit, I don't remember this song. Which is a pity, it's a beautiful one. I don't think I'll add it to my playlist (like a did with Italy's entries from 2011 and 2015), but still, it was so nice to listen to it now. Plus, I love Jake's reactions :)
She was gorgeous that year and deserved to win too but Rybak was as brilliant
She was my favourite 2009. I like Rybak but she still makes me cry. Stunning performance. I guess Rybaks violin was awesome that year but voicewise she won i feel.

Thaleya1 Yes, I am from Norway and of course I am happy we won, but I still love this more. Yohanna’s voice is so good and this makes me emotional. She should come back one day.
I love her. I have been mesmerized since 2009.
I'd love if you react to all winners of the contest starting with Switzerland 1956 someday. It gives you a great view on how music has evolved the last ~70 years.
She was my winner that year. Her voice in combination with those dreamy cloud shapes mesmerized from the start. Still have this song on my phone😍. I also enjoyed Iceland entry in 2012
Such a masterpiece, just wow.
This is one of my favorite songs in the contest ever!
That's a fantastic song, an unbelievable performance and definitely deserved to either finish 1st or 2nd. Iceland is like a "brother-country" to me in Ireland. I feel such a strong connection between our 2 nations and I hope they will win Eurovision someday.
Pure, introverted, dreamy. It's just really classy and its also quite heartbreaking as well. Absolutely love the cello and back up singers too
You should definitely check out Estonian entry for the same year 2009 - it's just as captivating as Icelandic one and it's been performed in their mother tongue which sounds very mesmerising.
You see why Eurovision breaks my heart Jake? :) For me, her performance deserved to win ... and she was only 18? Beautifully performed and the backing vocals were very strong.
Such a beautiful song
I wish this had entered the year before- it would have been a winner
This song reminds me a lot of the song of Lithuania this year (Ieva) ... both created such a captivating atmosphere! And yes, I voted for both and I'm pretty sure I will still listen to 'is it true' and 'when we're old' in like 2025.
This is sooo beautiful song! Deserved to win!
I love Estonia (Urban Symphony) from this year. 2009 was my real start with watching Eurivision.
Semiha Yankı - Seninle Bir Dakika Eurovision 1975 Turkey
Thank you, Jake, for reacting to this song, which represented Iceland, at Eurovision 2009, when Alexander Rybak won. Thank you so much.

Just like me. Again, thank you so much. I enjoy your face reacts. Such a fan...
she is the sweetest and most beautiful woman that has ever appeared in eurovision
Iceland did also end 2nd in 1999. Their entry in 1990 on 4th is also worth to mention.
I saw your reaction to Fairytale and you seemed to think that it was great and a sure winner. But did you change your mind now after seeing Iceland? Iceland had a nice song, and the girl had a nice voice. Rybak though had more uniqueness and performed like no other. And Fairytale is not like any other song, while this one from Iceland was a bit more common.
2009 was the best year in my opinion, so many good songs with beautiful stagings. You should react to Ukraine,Estonia, Turkey, and Russia that year
This performance is like a dream sequence....
Love your expressions 😍😂😂
I think Alexander's song was a bit more unique in comparison and the guy's charisma didn't hurt him of course. But I do agree that Yohanna's song is better, if I had the choice right now, which one do I want to listen to it's obviusly going to be Yohanna.
Iceland was the runner up in 2009 and 1999, their highest position
Eric Saade - Popular Eurovision 2011 Sweden
Hi Jake, Please watch Poland 1994!!! It was the runner-up that year as well and it was also a very powerful ballad with fantastic vocals.
Fully agree with every word sir…
I love this song !!
Of my favorite songs
Iceland has gone from this ❤️ to Hatari 🤮
I LOVE this song
My 3rd all time favourite❤️
What a perfect song!!! Perfect fit for adult contemporary radio and ... hey! why not country radio as well!!!
My absolute favourite song from Iceland was "Ég á líf" from Eyþór Ingi Gunnlaugsson. Both the live perfromance and the absolutely charming video deserve separate visits. Sadly it finished a dismal 17th, but that means nothing.
You should Check out Celine Dion Eurovision song that won in 1988 with just 1 point for the second place! She is mesmerizing
My personal winner from the 2009 contest
One of the best songs and performances in the Eurovision, peroid.
I loved this song, way more than I ever liked Norway (I know, sue me). But my favorite from this year is still Estonia, and then Russia and Armenia. Such a good year!

Lifeofsundancekid I Just sued you but the song is good. I can agree on that.
Jake, this was the second time Iceland came in 2nd place. They did it in 1999, too.
I used to love this song and the singer too.. Island

#Luke I will be listening to this all the time. What a voice!
Iceland also came 2nd in 1999, the difference between the 1st and 2nd place were only 17 points.
she sings like an Angel
very nice song and how beautifull and sweet girl, amazing.greetings from greece iceland very well done entry
You really need to take a reaction to some 2015 songs. The year was so strong, and seeing Sweden winning was a disappointment, but it was still great.
This really deserved winning in 2009, instead of the mediocre song with a bad singer from Norway, that gave everything on show, instead of the song. Iceland brought a clean, pure and sweet song, performed perfectly by Yohanna :) Iceland and Estonia were the only winners that year! And by the way - it's some contrast this year, back then it was in heaven, this year, they have send the hell :(
I never really paid any attention to the 2009 contest at the time, what a stunningly beautiful song. Miles better than the winner.
Queen 👑💐❤️👏❤️👏❤️👏❤️
I remember when that was omg 😂 I was like 4? And I was just jamming hehe. And wasn't 2009 when fairytale won??-😂 I'm having flashback tf?
This and Oro from Serbia 2008 are my favourite eurovision songs of all time
Love this song. Iceland came 2nd in 1999 I think.
My favorite Eurovision song from my country ever - second one is Valentine Lost by Eiríkur Hauksson.
Alexander was good, but you are right Iceland Johanna was perfectly well put together in all senses....
I agree 😍
That was the real winner that year, such an amazing dreamy performance Please react to Israel 2005 Shiri Maymon - Hasheket Shenish'ar
If you liked Yohanna's vocals, you should react to Jade Ewen (United Kingdom) of the same year, 2009!
This a best song of all history Eurovision!!!
Yohanna wasn't the only second place for Iceland Selma in 1999 also was second , Yohanna tried to represent three times Iceland.
