lance Eagan is the man. I first found out about him from pod cast's from gritty angler. He's the reason I got into ESN. Always a pleasure to see him fish...or talk about fishing. He also inspired me to try competition fishing. I have a ways to go though.

Enjoyable video. Those whitefish look good fun too. It looked a beautiful autumn day they were fishing. I'd love to fish over there one day.

I like what he said about the white fish. It was disheartening to see how people treated them on a trip I took to Montana a while back. I thought they put up a great fight and didn't seem to be so abundant that they were taking away from the trout.

Years ago I evaluated an on-stream property for a client in this watershed. It was remarkable how much bigger the trout were in the deep cut banks on the restored reach of the stream. The rest of the stream had fish the size of this video. The lesson: look for those cuts and get the fly in tight! Cover is going to be king.

I have to agree about Joe. If you buy some of his books you will see he has been doing "European nymphing" back when it was "American Nymphing" lol

As European living near the Aude i d say he just missed half of what to do European nymphing. Maybe it will work on heavily density river in the Usa but not here. I m still learning after 2 years of only practice nymphing (fishing fly 20yrs). First there s not one technique but far more...fil posé, fil tendu, roulette, glissée, tcheque. French nymphing is not about only long leader, and never use bobble indicator...people will laugh about you in France...only two color line (psst Umpqa made the best...buy usa 😉) about 20cm max. My nymph are made in 1.5 and 2 tungsten bead....we rarely use more. The nymph he showed is very good, it is a pattern a friend on the french fly team used, but not that heavy. (Jig hook, tail & corpse in pheasant fiber circled in copper, antron glitter in rose or mirage UV dubbing, and a splitted tung bead in front color copper or silver... you can add too some orange Uv turn at bottom or in front). What he miss is that we emphazied the back cast....so that we can rush into tge water the nymph, so it enable us to make drift with small nymph without any action on leader while keeping contact with the nymphs. Anotger thing is that the length of the leader variate on the mood of the fish, if it bite slowly add more length, if it bite on end animation...reduce length. In a drift there s three phase...he only showed one. And i m very far to be perfect in that fishing style...after two years of practice with people having international level. Have fun thought 😉

Thanks for the comment. It's true there is a lot more to show about Euro-style nymphing, but this is a 1/2-hour show and it would take hours to fit instruction showing every single technique one can do. This episode was really meant to show people who have never even heard of Euro-style nymph fishing what it is. So far, a lot of anglers are trying it out as a result.

We've been nymphing like this for the last 30+ years, that I know of. What is with the "czech nymphing"...."European nymphing" stuff?

Pumping a fish's stomach to see what it's feeding on is one of the least sportsmanlike moves I've ever seen. It's as bad as those hunters who use a barrel of bait to attract and then shoot bears at close range. Ugh! First of all, it's needlessly harmful to the fish. The fish has had tough enough a time just being caught. To extend its time out of the water while you screw around with a turkey baster down its throat adds to the likelihood of permanent brain damage and death. Second, you can use a fine net, made expressly for this purpose, to sift the water to see what the fish may be feeding on; that's good enough. Third, pumping a fish's stomach does not guarantee that you will know any better what it's likely to feed on next. It's just a terrible, unsporting idea.
