It's been 15 years since the Sears Tower was renamed. Hasn't the period of stubborn refusal expired yet? Note that The John Hancock Center (or the "Hancock Building" as it was often called) doesn't go by that name anymore either. It's now simply known as '875 North Michigan Avenue.' The John Hancock Insurance Company requested that the original name be dropped since they are no longer tenants and have no association with that building.

Small history lesson: the reason Chicago has this beautiful lakefront is because a long time ago a very wealthy man bought up all the lakefront property and donated it to the park district with one caveat: it can never be sold to a private entity. That man’s name was Montgomery Ward. another wealthy man wanted in on it too, so he donated money to build the museum campus, his name was Marshall Fields.

I live in Chicago and am from Los Angeles. I've lived in many large cities in the US and Chicago has to be the most beautiful of them all. It is so green in the summer. I have never seen so much green and flowers in my life. It's clean. There is so much to do. The neighborhoods are amazing and in Summer there are lots of festivals and concerts in the parks. It's very walkable and easy to get around. Yes, Chicago has cold winters with snow, but the Spring, Summer, and Fall are fantastic. I don't think I can move back to California because I am in love with how green and colorful this city is. I could never leave it. A large part of the reason Chicago has such great architecture is because of the Fire in the early 1870's and the World's Fair in 1892. The movers and shakers of the city wanted to make it the greatest city so, after a large part of it burned down, they lured the cream of the crop of architects to the city and spared no expense rebuilding. That 20 year span was when the stockyards were thriving and railroads crossed the country. Beef was brought in from the ranches out west, pork from the Iowa farms, and poultry from all over and they were sent out to the cities of the East in the new fangled refrigerated cars. The railroad also brought in grain from Minnesota and the Dakota territories which was sent out East either by rail or by ship on the Lakes. A LOT of money was being made in Chicago and they spent a lot of it to build the city.

Chicago is only in the East, if you divide the whole country into just two pieces, East and West. Chicago was only incorporated as a city in the 1830s so it’s newer than even St. Louis or New Orleans, let alone the Eastern seaboard cities. But as the center of the countries railroads and the economic growth that caused, most of the architecturally impressive buildings are from the 1920s or later - like the Wrigley building shown here or the building the restaurant she was in (Chicago Athletic Association). There’s not much that dates back to 1871.

The reason why the part of the city in downtown and nearby has a lower level is the lower level is actually the real ground level. There was so little elevation change between the natural ground level and the lake that they made the choice to raise the entire city up from ground level to provide drainage mainly for sanitation. In the building I live in on Harrison St., we have access to the wall built to hold back all the fill on which the road above is built. It is about ten feet of fill in that area. In the loop, the fill is a bit more than ten feet maybe as much as 16 feet or even 20 feet in some areas while further out is is less. I think the fill around the building I live in was put in in 1854.

To experience the magic of it you must walk under and look up inside. It's like you took a drug with beautiful effects! My favorite building right now is still the AQUA TOWER which also creates a dazzling effect of water pouring down due to the placement of balconies and glass. The glass rooms overhanging the city at 103 stories also have glass floors and it's quite amusing to go and see the visitors unsure about stepping out WAY above the Chicago River. I ask if they can swim and reassure them if the floor breaks you will land in water!

I don't live in Chicago but I have friends and family so I visit quite often and it is always an amazing visit. Chicago food scenes is unparalleled, architecture is amazing. Chicago feels like an upscale new york. It's clean, it's friendly and the buildings, gosh they're beautiful buildings. Museums, all kind you can think of, the lake is truly like an ocean and it has pretty good beaches, although the water is always freezing cold. One of the best things about Chicago is the neighborhoods. All different and with different vibes. Chicago is way underrated, but for me is in the top three of favorite cities in the world and that is saying a lot since I've been lucky enough to be pretty much anywhere in the world. All the great lakes area is beautiful. Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan all extremely beautiful states. The great lakes are just too diverse and nature at its best. Not many mountains, like in the west, but the thousands upon thousands of lakes, forests, etc...

Lived in the Chicago area all my life and can say the winters can have days where the temperature goes down to -20F (-29 C) and summers can have days where the temperature goes up to 105F (40.5 C). Chicago has its east border with Lake Michigan which is so large, it affects the city weather. Warmer by the lake in winter, colder by the lake in summer. But no matter the season, you can walk along the lake front and enjoy the skyline of this beautiful city!

There's also the odd summer day where if the wind turns from the northeast, it can drop a bit over 20°F. So it can go from a nice toasty 85°F to a brisk if not chilly 65°F. And that happens in under 15 minutes when the wind picks up off the lake. So if you plan to be outdoors for most of the day in summer, packing a jacket somewhere may not be a bad idea.

Winters can be cold, summers can be hot and humid, springs and autumns can be rainy, but there is ALWAYS something to do in the Chicagoland area (aka: city and suburbs). There are music festivals, parks, nature preserves, clubs, activities, tours, amazing restaurants (and FOOD TRUCKS!), museums up the ying-yang and that's barely scratching the surface. You kinda have to try to be bored here. So, come to Chicago instead! Oh, and Lake Michigan (and all the Great Lakes) is actually inland an sea. All the Great Lakes together hold 20% of the planet's fresh water. Michigan is amazing to sail on and swim in! No salt, sharks, stingrays, or jellies!

It's because it was transcribed by French explorers before the US moved in, and they spelled the sound they were hearing the natives say But the spelled it in the French way where the last letter is always silent so sticking a silent consonant on the end is needed to make the last vowel get pronounced (by making the vowel no longer be the last letter). Interestingly this is also the reason that Kansas and Arkansas aren't pronounced the same despite obviously being from the same origin. Both got transliterated by the French but one of them got english-ized assuming the ending 's' in the spelling was meant to be pronounced. The other stayed under French influence a bit longer and kept the silent S pattern.

People who complain about Chicago weather talk only about the winters. Chicago has four distinct seasons, but what makes it a little more tricky is Lake Michigan creates an occasional variance. It can be hot 5 miles from the lake, but cool and pleasant near the lake in the summer. Likewise when "The Hawk" blows off the lake in winter, it can be frigid. The Metro area of Chicago has almost 10 million people (about the size of Greater London).

I grew up in Chicago. It is freezing December thru early April. It then rains for a bit, then begins to heat up in late May. By late June, it is hot as hell with 100% humidity until the end of August. September is wonderful, and then it begins to cool down mid-October. From June thru September, there are a lot of outside street fairs and activities. Less so in the colder months, but some. The city is beautiful, there are beaches, and it is not far from Indiana Dunes National Park. There are huge world-class museums, fantastic nightlife, a cosmopolitan atmosphere with more of an old-world charm compared to the in-your-face New York experience and the food is out of this world. The city is divided into distinct neighborhoods, many with ethnic distinctions. Parts of the South and West sides are poor and dangerous, but there is almost no reason to go to those areas. The rest of the city is pretty safe. Some of the best distinct neighborhoods are Armour Square [Chinatown], the Near West Side [where one can find Greektown and Little Italy], many neighborhoods on the Southwest Side [Mexican], Devon Avenue going thru North Park on the Far North Side is known for South Asian food/culture, Uptown has a large Ethiopian population and Lake View is where one of the largest gay neighborhoods in the world can be found. Some of the most popular music on offer in the city is the Blues, Jazz, Alternative Rock and Hip-Hop. The city is also the home of House Music and has a large African American population that loves Gospel Music. There are large Mexican and Puerto Rican populations that speak Spanish. The University of Chicago is known for its many Nobel laureates and was the location of the development of the atomic bomb during World War II. It can be found on a beautiful Gothic Revival-style campus in the Hyde Park neighborhood, not far from the Museum of Science and Industry. Some of the other really good museums are the Chicago Art Institute, the Field Museum of Natural History, the Shedd Aquarium, the Planetarium and the Garfield Park Conservatory [a giant Victorina.greenhouse with various rooms based upon world climate zones]. There are also 2 zoos [Lincoln Park Zoo in the Lincoln Park neighborhood along Lake Michigan, and the other is Brookfield Zoo located just west of the city in the suburb of Brookfield. It is the 2nd largest zoo in the USA after the San Diego Zoo]. Upscale shopping can be found along the "Magnificent Mile" on the Near North Side, just across the Chicago River from "The Loop" [Chicago's downtown business district].

Living in Chicagoland suburbs for 20 years now - it definitely gets cold in the winter. Downtown is colder than the suburbs because of the wind from the lake. Downtown also gets more snow than the suburbs due to "lake effect snow." If you come in the winter - and her suggestion of early December is great - be sure to be protected from the wind and cold. I'm originally from St. Louis and we have cold winters, but the wind up here in Chicago is on another level. Chicagoans are smart enough to dress for the weather, and there is a LOT of foot traffic downtown, even in the winter.

If you’re coming from Portugal in December to either city, you will need a whole new wardrobe. I recommend early September as it’s still relatively warm and the tourist season is over. Chicago gets over 60 million visitors a year (NY gets 90 million). The skyscraper was invented in Chicago. The city is like an architectural museum (especially for modernism). The Chicago architecture boat tour is the second most popular tour in the world. Only the Vatican is more popular. You should look at some Chicago River architectural tour videos (most are too long to react to). The Chicago river is the busiest commercial waterway in the U.S. Chicago is a cleaner and nicer city than NY. NY is unique in the world. But it is more international. Chicago is probably the most American city.

It amazes me how many videos I've watched of non-Americans reacting to the U.S. and almost all of them say they are most interested in visiting Florida and Texas, and possibly California (Los Angeles) and New York City. Leaving aside why I'm not interested in visiting Texas and Florida (except maybe the Keys), I'm surprised and sad at how much visitors overlook so much of the country. Trust me, you can get sun and eat barbecue more places than those two.

Hello. I am from the west and south suburbs of Chicago. Chicago is an awesome city. It is filled with many small neighborhoods, lots of parks, and fabulous beaches along the lakeshore. Our skyline is the best and our food is unmatched. You definitely want to visit Chicago at least once in your life. ❤❤❤❤

Born and raised in Chicago. Best architecture, food, people, world-class museums, great bike trails, jogging trails, etc. Sports: Cubs and White Sox (baseball), The Bulls, men's basketball team, Sky is women's basketball team, and BlackHawks& Wolvea is hockey, and both men and women soccer. No other city can boast that men major league sports team. The Magnificent Mile is just that. A mile of high end retail shops, restaurants and hotels. You can spend a day just walking the Magnificent Mile and looking at all the retail and some buildings are like mini malls with dozen more shops in side. WHATEVER YOU WANT OUT OF A VACATION YOU WILL FIND IT IN CHICAGO!.

If you come to Chicago you have to come more in the April-October range. I love the winter, but one of the #1 things I love to recommend is the architecture tour on boats that go up the main, north, and south branches of the river and those don’t run when it’s too cold. The tours talk about the history of the city plus all the different architecture styles you can see and how they play off each other. We’ve just been having a mini family reunion in Chicago and so we took all the out of town people on an architecture tour yesterday. Even my three year old niece was pretty much entertained for the ~75 minute tour. Although she was confused because the boat was big enough she didn’t know she was on it so at first she kept asking when we were going to go on the boat… while we were sitting on the boat. My nephew who is almost five just remembers the “corn cob buildings” aka marina towers. (Google “car going off marina towers into the river”, there was a stunt for a movie and then a commercial reenacting the stunt)

Skip NYC, visit Chicago for the holidays! Seriously, hands down, the most beautiful time of year! I was born and raised in Chicago and there is just no place on Earth like it! I love my city! I miss it every day! Sure, the bean is ok, but there's so much to do and see in Chicago that is so much more interactive and interesting. The museums in Chicago are absolutely the BEST! There are nearly 100 museums in the city, many of them are actually FREE! Sure, there's "Museum square" which is more like an "L" with the Field Museum, the Museum of Science and Industry, the Adder planetarium, the Shed Aquarium, and the Art Institute (which area all Word Renown!) but there's also so many smaller museums that are ALL "worth it!" There's food, culture, music, shopping, architecture, history. Chicago is my favorite city, there's just nothing like it. Yes, Lake Michigan surprises people all the time by how HUGE it really is. People think, "Oh, it's a lake. It can't be all that big." No, it's HUGE and it's Amazing! Walking along the lakefront is one of my favorite things to do. Every time I get to go back to visit, I always walk along one of the beaches. Yes, Chicago has BEACHES! With Sand and everything! Another Fun Fact about Chicago. If you visit downtown, take a tour of one of the Skydecks (either the Willis Tower or The John Hancock) - what is surprising to most people is that all the skyscrapers are built on a Cantilever system. This means they Sway! They're built this way on purpose! Chicago, the city, was built over a swamp so the ground isn't solid. The cantilever system was designed to allow the buildings to sway in the wind, instead of toppling down. All major cities have a "Wind tunnel effect" which means winds funnel between the tall buildings and can be pretty strong. The cantilevers allow the buildings to sway slightly, so when you're up in the Skydecks, you can actually FEEL them sway a little! Also, Chicago is known as "The Windy City" - BUT, it's NOT because of the weather! It was called that by journalists from other cities around the time of the World's Faire (early 1900's) because "The Politicians are full of Hot Air!" LOL If you visit Chicago for more than a day, I highly recommend getting a "City Pass" these passes allow you to visit some of the more popular destinations for a really discounted price! Also, don't miss out on THE FOOD! Sure, there's the Deep Dish Pizza (which my favorite is Pequad's) but there's also the iconic Italian Beef sandwiches, Chicago style Hot Dogs, Chicago mix popcorn (a mix of butter, cheese and caramel popcorn), and so much more. I can't say enough about my city. You just have to experience it!

Not from Chicago, but I have lived in Chicago for a long time now and I'm watching from here!!! I actually just went to the bean a few days ago because I had friends from out of town visiting. The bean just reopend it last week. There is a lot to offer here and the best times to visit are either late spring/early summer so May or June, or December during the holidays. There's a lot to do and it's worth the visit at least a few times.

I will never forget my first trip to Chicago. It was a 7th grade field trip. Going onto the Willis Tower, known as the Sears Tower at the time, was such a surreal and frightening experience for me. lol I will never forget how fast the elevator was, and the building swaying back and forth when we got to the top. I was born in Indiana, but moved to Chicago when I was 19. Been here almost 15 years. It's a wonderful city. I have thought about moving to Michigan, but I won't be disappointed if I live in Chicago the rest of my life. lol

I'm from The Chicago Area and can say it is currently extremely hot and humid outside. In the winter it gets extremely cold. So we get the worst of both winter and summer. lol As far as traveling to the US goes Chicago is a great place to start. It's a big city but it's not as overwhelming and hard to navigate as New York. It's a great introduction into learning to navigate and travel in US Cities. I'd do Chicago and then New York City so you can take the experience you gained in navigating US cities form Chicago to New York. Edit: We also have a great Airport hear called O'hare which has a ton of daily flights direct to and from most of Europe.

Chicago is still one of the best cities to visit aside from Montreal and Berlin. Love that you are checking out places other than Texas. You can get good southern food almost anywhere. Keep up the great content.

I lived in Chicago for 3 years and have visited many many times. It is one of my favorite cities in the world. It is the quintessential American city. It has such an amazing vibe and so much to do. It gets a bad rap because of a bad section on the southside but it is very hip. It is quite cold in the winter due to wind off the lake but also gets hot in the summer. For sure in terms of cities in the US, I would highly recommend visiting!! This creator is good bit she has too much advertisement and not enough content.

I live in Chicago, and I do want to affirm that it is so much fun. The architecture is outstanding ( the skyscraper was invented here!), the food and music is outstanding, and the art institute is amazing. This visitor missed so much , the summer is a lot of fun with so many festivals and cultural events; and the lakefront is the absolute best part of the city, which is best appreciated in summer!

I am from Chicago. It is the third largest (and is the cleanest) city in America. This video barely covered any of the great things here, from top world class food to top world class museums, such as the Art Institue, which is one of the top art museums in the world, as well as all professional sports (including two baseball teams, and a men's and women's pro soccer team and a men's and women's pro basketball team), and top universities such as the University of Chicago and Northwestern University. The Brookfield Zoo is the second largest zoo in America. One of the highest rated restaurants in America (and arguably the top) is here (Alinea). The city has great food of every ethnicity, including great Mexican food, as over 20% of the population is Mexican in origin. There is even great barbeque ( we specialize in ribs here, whereas Texas specializes in brisket). Even the hot dogs and beef sandwiches are unique and great. Most Europeans have no idea how great this place is, since the other two largest cities, New York City and Los Angeles, are media centers on the coasts; but Chicago is the heart and soul of America for the north. It is very hot in the summer and perfect in the autumn as far as weather goes. I strongly suggest you react to this for a very entertaining video to react to regarding the 113th annual overnight boat race from Chicago to Mackinac (pronounced MAK-in-aw) Island in northern Michigan. kzread.info/dash/bejne/inaqzseKesTTc6g.htmlsi=qX2mq9IK_-GPIi7S
