Please sir, in your free time, listen to Whitney Houstion's version of the Star Spangled Banner, it will give you chills. There is a video on KZread, she sang it before the Super Bowl one year. kzread.info/dash/bejne/p3WNrbaGgc-dfbQ.htmlsi=bdTI78Nz6uxtG9rP

The video you reacted to is lies. Only 4 Americans died during the battle, there was no pile of bodies holding up the flag. Also, Washington never said the bit about "Americans would rather die on their feet than live on their knees". Helping this video to propagate by reacting to it is doing a disservice to the truth.

They did not die for the flag. They died for freedom, which is what that flag represents. It is more than some thread and material. Those of us that have gone into combat with that flag on our shoulder know. And that is also why this song is so special. It represents those that have fought and have sacrificed for that freedom. Not just in this battle, but every one after. And I recommend that everyone go visit Fort McHenry. It is an amazing piece of history.

Fake Story. How historically false is this story…. 1. It was the War of 1812, not the War of Independence which was 36 years earlier. There were no colonies anymore. 2. Key was negotiating for one man, there were no prison ships full of Americans, there was no such prisoner swap negations. Again… made up. 3. Key never went down in the ship to talk to prisoners, cuz there were no prisoners. Again… made up. 4. It’s Fort McHenry… not Henry. 5. The quote “Dying on one’s feet, rather than living on one knees” was NEVER said by Washington. It was stated by Antonio Zapata decades later during the Mexican revolution. 6. It was 15 British ships, not hundreds. And Baltimore is over 200 miles up the Chesapeake Bay… you can’t see the Ocean or its horizon. 7. No such ultimatum was given about lowering the flag. Whole thing made up. There was never any such order to “aim all guns” at the flag, which is ludicrous anyways. 8. The claim that flagpole was hit again and again… all made up. 9. Key did not go to Fort McHenry after the bombardment. All made up… 10. No Americans died holding up the Flag pole… entirely false and made up. 11. No refugees of women and children were inside the fort. 12. Key was a lawyer living Georgetown, VA, not Baltimore.

I arrived in the US in ‘82 from Eastern Europe. What Americans don’t understand is that Europeans became the countries that exist only since the early 20th century through WWI. It took (I forget how many) millions to die during that war to remove the dynasties that ruled Europe. WWII, again ended in destroying the economies of almost all countries which haven’t recovered without losing something. Europeans see the cost of liberty through some huge death toll.

Many times, people look at Americans as "Cowboys", but we aren't "Cowboys" we're patriots. I served for 18 years in the US Military and much of our service and training goes over the history of our country. What is important to understand with the American spirit, is that these weren't all organized troops. They were militias, they were the fathers and sons who believed so much in freedom, that they would walk through the fires of hell to be free. This video is an excellent educational tool that explains why Americans are so proud of their country.

What an interesting (read: not a good) position… you claim this *isn’t* a war-mongering anthem, and then go on to share/brag about all the wars your family are proud to have participated in. That’s some pretty brazen rhetoric. Also, Francis Scott Key literally wrote this during a battle in the war of 1812, and he is explicitly romanticizing war. Perhaps its worth familiarizing yourself with the poem in its entirety; here’re the last two stanzas: And where is that band who so vauntingly swore That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion, A home and a country should leave us no more? *Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave,* From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave, And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave, O'er the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave. O! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand, Between their lov'd home and the war's desolation, Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the Heav'n rescued land, *Praise the Power that hath made and preserv'd us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,* And this be our motto-"In God is our Trust;" The US is absolutely a war-mongering nation and our anthem reflects that.

One photo has it being held next to a building.. from the 3rd floor windows. But there were 2 flags. The Fort flew the smaller Storm Flag that night and reflew the Garrison Flag in the morning. The fag was in the possession of a family until the 1870s when they turned it over to the Smithsonian. They had been giving particular people pieces of it and had whittled it down to what seems to be half its original size. This includes the huge hole in the center.

@@UncleUncleRj. It’s not trolling. There were no Colonies in 1812, there were no prisoners in a warship. Key had no conversations with the British Commander during the siege. There were not hundreds of British ships (there were 15). There was no “targeting” of the US Flag, there were no women and children taking refuge in the Fort, there were no bodies “holding up the flag”, Key never went to Fort McHenry after the siege. Key watched the siege from an American truce ship, not on a British warship. This “story” of the Star Spangled Banner has been debunked as false for years now.

@@SMHfromDummies Yes, I know the speaker got the war wrong, but it was still a war with the British, there was still a ship discussing a truce, there was still a Fort McHenry with a battle that took place where Key still wrote the song about with the same story about the flag whether or not there were physical bodies holding it up. That was what I said, there were some mistakes (wrong war) and some lavishing - extravagant storytelling like exaggerating the amount of warships or saying dead men were holding the flag up. It doesn't really matter that much if you're telling a story and not writing an essay about it because it's still mostly true and the way he was telling it you can tell in the voice that it's an exaggerated tale for entertainment.

When I was in elementary school back in the 1970s every student in my class was required to sing or recite the Star Spangled Banner from memory. We also had to explain the meaning of each line of the song. As for how it was written we learned that Francis Scott Key went out to a British ship as a negotiator. When he was finished he could not go ashore as the tide was out. He could do nothing but watch as the other British ships (was not told how many there were) attacked the unnamed American fort. The next morning when he saw the American flag still flying above the fort he was inspired to write a poem that was later put to music that we now recognize as the Star Spangled Banner. We did not learn about any conversations he had on board the ship or of him visiting the fort. This next part is something I once read in an issue of Reminisce magazine about 25 to 30 years ago. I am doing this from memory so please excuse me if I make a mistake. In the early part of the 20th century the United States of America did not have a national anthem. The Star Spangled Banner was only one of about four or five different songs that the American people were asked to vote for to be the national anthem. For many of the American adults the Star Spangled Banner was the last song on the list that they wanted to be the national anthem. The American people wanted the American government to stay out of the conflicts that were going on in Europe and Asia during this time period and they viewed the Star Spangled Banner as a song that glorified war. As for the other songs on the list they could have voted for the American adults could not agree on which one song should be made the national anthem. As this was not an election to select a political candidate or some issues school children, many of them attending one room schoolhouses throughout the country, were allowed to vote for which song should be the national anthem. The majority of the school children voted for the Star Spangled Banner and as it received more votes than any of the other songs on the list, after it was ratified by the American government it official became the national anthem for the United States of America in the 1930s.

I know other people from different countries always wondered why we were so patriotic and everyone just about flies the American Flag, this I think explains why, the men that held that flag until they died, and then others moved in to keep it from falling, holding until they died, until there were enough bodies to keep it propped up, it deserves nothing but the upmost respect and loyalty from us. The flag does not fly due to the wind, it waves from the last breath of every soldier that died for it, from then til now. People thought we made a big deal about some Americans taking a knee to it, or trying to ban it from the games, they need to watch this. If I ever took a knee or disrespected that flag, as much of a loving Father I had, a smack to the back of the head would have happened...lol

It’s only a single example of what America (USA) went through to become a truly free country but the one that our national anthem was written about. In the USA we cherish this song but I don’t think most Americans know this story. I am 42 and didn’t really know about this until about 10 years ago. I always stood tall and proud and took my hat off if I was wearing on and put my hand over my heart when it was playing like all great Americans do. But now I can’t help but tear up thinking of how much these people before me fought and died for what we have. And how so many people in the USA now are blessed to have been able to move here or have always lived here and they are now trying to say that the USA is the problem. People try to flock here from other countries then they say the USA is terrible. Why did you come here then?

I lived in Europe as a young child in Rome for 2 years, and then as a teenager in Vienna for 4 years, about 12 years after the occupation as a result of WW II, so I grew up somewhat understanding Europeans and their life style. At that time, Americans were herald somewhat as 'saviors', and we were treated very special. I am not so sure that that attitude still persists. So, it is very nice to hear your positive comments, and to see your emotional reaction, as just about all of us have when watching that video. This flag now called the Star Spangled Banner was commissioned by Lt. Colonel George Armistead, who took commission of Fort McHenry around 1813. Two flags were made the larger being a "garrison flag". But this was no ordinary flag. Today's garrison flags are 20' X 38'. It is said the Colonel wanted this flag because of the war with Britain to be "So large that the British could not fail to see her". This flag, made by Mary Pickersgill and daughters measured 30' X 42'.

And not to worry your English is awesome I didn’t have any problems understanding you! The one and only person to sing this song the way it supposed to be sung is Chris Stapleton at the NFL think it’s Super Bowl. I look forward to watching some of your other videos.!! you should review that song sung by Chris Stapleton!

@@mikeh8416 Every country needs a 'creation myth' on which to base its national identity. But when that myth is manufactured by embellishing real events with fictional details and fictional sacrifice, it is taking away from the real sacrifice made by real people. The problem with the original video is that everyone now thinks of "the men who died holding the flag", when in fact the flagpole (which was actually a 75 foot tall repurposed ship's mast) suffered no damage; *nobody died holding it up* , as that would have been a physical impossibility. I prefer to remember the four *real* patriots who died: artillerymen Lt Claggett and Sgt Clemm who were manning a cannon that received a direct hit, militiaman Charles Messinger carrying water to the outer perimeter, and militiaman Thomas Beeston hit by shapnel. That is the corrosive result of warping real events into myths - it's another version of stolen valor.

This guy's "version" of what happened is a little off, he gets the lyrics wrong twice in his story, and George Washington did not say "The American Christian would rather..." because part of the founding of this country was based on religious freedom and the separation of church and state! This was recorded in church during a service and the narrator is a preacher.

You are 100% correct, Washington never said it. It's a great quote though. Frankly if you take the "American" from the quote it sounds more 20th century than 18th century, doesn't it? In fact, most attribute the quote to Zapata. Minus the "christian" part, of course.

The separation of Church and state means; the church could not control the state like it did in Europe or the mosques controlling the caliphates in the Middle East, but it also means the state should never control the church/religion or their ability to operate. Literally separate them from being able to control each other. That statement has no bearing on the importance of either or the influences one could make over someone making a decision in the other. It doesn’t mean take religion out of schools or houses of government. Most people take that as a vague reference to not allowing religious values or morals to in any way effect political policies. This is not true at all. That’s a very modern and incorrect interpretation. All political policy is shared morality when boiled down, and our founding fathers were mostly daily practicing Christians. I’m not even Christian or religious, but anyone who denies that our country was founded with extremely deep ties and influence from Judeo-Christian values is fooling themselves. I’m glad it was so I can have the freedoms and benefits of living in the greatest country to ever exist. By the way, I’m not attempting to counter anything you said, just adding more context for anyone else who reads this.

@@MlTCH Understood. However the first amendment of the US constitution does not separate church and state. This so called "Establishment Clause" actually says "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof". In other words, the constitution straddles the fence. It says congress cannot be in the church establishment business, but it also cannot prohibit others or any individual from exercising their right to establish one. Even if they are a member of congress. It does not prohibit any member of the three branches from using their status as a religious bully pulpit. It also doesn't limit anyone from running for government office as a loud and proud member of any denominational church, nor does it directly prohibit government funding or endorsement of any church, school, program, system, or belief. Just as long as congress doesn't establish one.

The most inaccurate part of the story is implying that it took place during our war of independence, it didn't. This was from the war of 1812, in which we declared war against England because they were trying to impress military service from men on American ships. So sometimes this is called our second war of independence. The fort still stands today, and has the history of the battle. The flag from the battle is in the Smithsonian I believe, along with the original copy of the poem.

Although the naval impressment of sailors is commonly cited as the cause for the war, *both* US and British navies engaged in the practice - matters came to a head with the 'Little Belt' affair in 1811, after which both navies suspended such 'recruitment', so the issue had actually been resolved well before the war started. Indeed, the states most affected (the maritime states of New England) voted *against* war. The 'War Hawks' in Congress who voted in favor of war in 1812 were from the states of the south and west, and had the objective of annexing Canada in order to a) remove British influence from the continent and, more importantly, b) recapture the thousands of slaves who had been escaping to freedom in Canada. The idea that impressment was the cause of the War of 1812 is post Civil War revisionism, which is not borne out by historical fact.

The essence of the story is true but there are a few things. Francis was only negotiating for one man a Dr. William Beanes. It wasn't the entire British fleet but exactly 100 ships. Only about 12 of the largest mortor ships sustained the attack because the fort outranged most of the British ships, aside from some rocket fire and a couple failed troop landings the fort repelled. Francsis was waxing poetic not literal when he said it was patriots bodies holding the flagpole. The Americans did however change flags from a ginormous one (a special FU to the British by the forts American commander) to a smaller but still oversized storm flag while under enemy fire 🔥. The overall goal of the attack was to capture the harbor and land troops to flank Americans defending against a huge British land force at the outskirts of the city. But the cities citizens held the line and even killed British Commander, Major General Robert Ross at the onset of battle thanks to one of two American teenage snipers who fired near simultaneously and killed him throwing the entire British leadership into chaos

The fleet was actually only 19 ships, not 100. The bombardment was carried out by *five* 'bomb vessels (not twelve), each armed with a single large mortar. The 1500 rounds fired equates to a single shot each minute over the period of the bombardment. The 'huge British land force' was actually outnumbered 5:1 by the defending forces around Baltimore - it was a small, mobile force only ever intended to make hit-and-run raids down the eastern seaboard, to distract US forces away from the Great Lakes and the Canadian border, the security of which was the principal objective.
