He's stuck in a dead end job, married to his old high school flame turned do-nothing wife with two grifting kids. The showrunners actually took a poll of what people thought was the worst, most demeaning career - that's how Al became a shoe salesman. he was the heart of the show, the underdog that the audience cheered for.

Did you ever notice that in all of these "loser" comedy shows, the guy who is portrayed as a loser actually has quite a bit of success in life. Al Bundy actually has many moments where he comes out ahead in many episodes. If he was truly such a "loser" the show wouldn't be that funny. No, he isn't a financial winner but he seems to come out pretty well in other ways. Notice the point the writers seem to be making about his neighbor Marcy, who is clearly wealthier than Al and yet is more unsatisfied.

You mentioned his comedy being easy, but the relatability to the character was deeper than the jokes. This is how many men his age either were, felt, or wanted to be if it wasnt going to result in a fight. He is relatable because he is the perfect stereotype of the middle aged father who works a dead end job that he hates to provide for his family that he loves, even if he often times doesnt like them.

I've actually one of Al Bundy's replies...and I did it during a wedding. I was a groomsman, and one of the bridesmaids kept trying to get me to go on a date with her. The bride and groom, being sadistic friends, decided to pair that particular bridesmaid with me for the event - which is one of the reasons they were my friends (we're all more than slightly sarcastic and mildly sadistic toward each other). At the end of the ceremony, when each bridesmaid and groomsman were coming together to walk down the aisle, the bridesmaid actually said the Peggy Bundy line, "So, did you miss me?" ...to which, without missing a beat, I immediately replied, "With every bullet so far." The wedding photographer caught the results of this exchange on film, with me smiling and the bridesmaid glaring, and THAT was the photo which the newlywed couple had printed, framed, and mounted above their fireplace.

This show was AMAZING. Definitely watch it if you can. People today are sucky and weak. Embrace comedy. If we can't laugh at ourselves, we end up being soft and critical of others, often unfairly. A big problem western people have today is that they're walking on eggshells to not trigger the woke idiots. Trigger them. Who cares? They're idiots. Do it on purpose by enjoying the content. Don't let them steal your joy. They don't make anything, they just attack. You make enjoyable content. Don't let them control you.

I’m not sure the humor would hit the same way in other countries but I grew up watching All in the Family, M.A.S.H., The Jeffersons, etc. Most gen Z would melt into puddles at the humor from those shows. 😂

MASH, the Adams Family, and Beverly Hillbillies re-runs made up much of my childhood TV watching. Oddly, Morticia and Gomez probably have one of the healthiest and modern relationships for a sitcom of that, and this, time.

There are actually about a dozen foreign remakes of the show. Some even used the same scripts as the original and just switched out jokes that were too American specific.

I am an extremely fat woman and this was hilarious. I grew up in the 80s when people weren't offended by everything. People knew how to laugh at themselves and if they didn't like a particular show or character they simply didn't watch it. Great reaction!

True fact: the original title of the pilot episode was "NOT THE COSBYS", as the show's creators wanted to get as far away from the "Cosby Show" formula as possible (remember the time).

“Married With Children” was on television in the US from 1987 until 1997. It was extremely popular because nothing this outrageous had even been on American television before, but it also offended a lot of people who tried to get the show stopped.

This is what we watched back in the day. Never apologize for finding humor in things. If we can't laugh at life, warts and all, what is the point of living? Don't be afraid of what others think of you. If someone don't like something you find funny, that is a them problem. Not a you problem. Also, if you were to watch the whole series you would see that Al oftentimes got it as good as he gave.

Married with Children was a savage sitcom, even back before everyone got wussy and comedians took pride in being offensive. Al Bundy was a former football star whose life went to shambles - trapped as a mall shoe salesman with a nagging wife and disrespectful kids, he's got nothing left to lose so he holds nothing back. Particularly with Marcie who, ever since moving in next door, never passed up any opportunity to insult Al - he returned the 'favor' by never passing up any opportunity to hit her with some form of "chicken" insult. "Jenny Craig" and "Slim-Fast" were popular weight loss programs of the era. If you get the chance, find the Married with Children Christmas Special with Sam Kinneson called "It's a Bundyful Life". Your sides will be aching for days from laughing so hard!
