Quase tudo sobre Timor-Leste era novo para mim. Teria sido interessante saber porque é que a ilha estava dividida em duas partes. A língua que a professora usa é muito fácil de compreender. A única expressão nova que aprendi foi "reerguer-se". É o que precisamos aqui também.

Houve uma altura em que ela hesitou entre "mais boa" e "melhor". Vi que ela teve medo de que os estrangeiros não entendessem porque naquele caso se poderia dizer "mais boa". Sublime! Quando "bom" e "mau" tem a ver com qualidades humanas de ética e vivência, a incorporação do "mais" não se costuma fazer. Com o tempo foi ficando uma pessoa mais boa e mais doce. Tu foste mais má para ela do que deverias ter sido. [Exemplos tirados da Gramática do Português da fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, pag.2145, exemplos (19)] Há casos, como o da frase dela, que ficam num limbo, onde ambas as formas são possíveis.

Obrigada, Sofia and Liz. This is a fascinating and heartwarming interview. I knew nothing about East Timor other than it had experienced terrible conflict. It's wonderful to hear that people are recreating their country, and that people like Sofía are contributing so much to that. I realise nowhere is without it's troubles, but this is an amazing and hopeful story! I'd love to learn enough Portuguese to go to East Timor, perhaps to teach English? X

I recall watching a documentary on East Timor and being appalled at what occurred. I never knew that Portuguese was the main language. What a fascinating conversation. I’m new to learning but recognised words here and there. Because your connection Liz, was a bit clearer , I understood more of what you said. But your teacher speaks at the rate that native speakers talk. Super fast. I really enjoyed listening. Thank you.

It's so awesome to listen to the difference between Portuguese from Portugal and from Brazil! The accent is so different, but not only that, the rhythm of a conversation feels different too!

I find I like the European accent more than BP, I also like the Angolan accent. Brazilians can be a bit arrogant about their language

I found this listening exercise very interesting. Although I lived in Indonesia for several years, I was not aware of this country's colonial "exploits" in East Timor. Very sobering information...

Apesar de viver fora de Portugal há muitos anos, considero o meu português ainda bom. Mas sigo os teus vídeos só para te ouvir falar na e da minha língua materna. Quando ouço português sinto-me em casa. Nunca as palavras de Pessoa tiveram tanto sigificado para mim - a minha pátria é a língua portuguesa.

I found it useful to change the playback speed slightly slower , that was really great to listen to the conversion it jogged my memory hearing a lot of words that I new , would love you to do more conversations please

Don't think anyone would be surprised about how your teacher remembers you as a student. People tend not to change very much.

Hi Liz! Just out of curiosity what is your background? The surname Sharma sounds Lebanese.

I am from Goa,Goa was ruled by Portuguese for 451years,Indonesia invaded East Timor and banned the Portuguese language,the same way India banned the Portuguese language here as an official language,India invaded Goa,Damão e Diu and Dada e Nagar Haveli,like East Timor we still did not get independence.

At 00:46 the subtitle appears as two words "por tanto". Not sure whether a mistake or not.

@@markbr5898 In this case it is. The correct word for therefore is "portanto", although "por" and "tanto" also exist separately.
