Europe's Worst Ecological Disaster Since Chernobyl (2000)

Cyanide River (2000): A leak of cyanide near Baia Mare, Romania, into the Someș River by the gold mining company Aurul spelled disaster for the Hungarian fishing and culinary industries.

When the tailings dam of the Esmeralda Explorations Gold Mine in Romania broke, it sent a torrent of cyanide and heavy metals into the Szamos and Tisza Rivers downstream in Hungary. Today both rivers are dead. The fishermen who harvested their riches must now shovel the carcasses of prime fish into skips. Fishing communities are desperate for compensation. Yet despite the evidence of disastrous pollution, officials from Esmeralda are in deep denial. It "could be increased salinity," according to the spokesperson from the mine's Australian co-owners. Yet with their stinging eyes and itchy throats the fishermen are angered by the mine rep's response. "I would start by making him a good soup of fish poisoned by cyanide and making him eat it." Up river in Romania the company are heightening the earthen banks of the mine's wastewater pools. They blame unusually heavy snow for causing the January 30th spill. To Hungary's Foreign Affairs spokesperson it's a reason but not an excuse - the banks simply should have been designed to cope. As this more recent spill demonstrates, the mining operations are unsafe. ABC Australia speaks to those involved and affected by the disaster.

The Mine spokesman was full of shit. My first thought was "Is it an old Soviet Era dam?" So I tried to look it up. A greenpeace article said "The dam was built *as* *recently* *as* *1998* so it failed in 2 years after being built? WTF does "as recently as" mean? Was it built in 1998 or not? Was it only worked on or upgraded or repaired in 1998? Maybe part of it was built in 1998? How much cyanide waste collected in 2 years? Wikipedia says the mine was open in 1958, but not when the dam was built. Does anybody know?

This river flows down the Danube and into the black sea, drinking water for 2.5mil people ended up contaminated and in some areas 80% of all local wildlife died yet I cannot find mention of prosecution anywhere. This affected 2000km of the Danube's water catchment area, it's disgraceful and cyanide heap gold mining techniques should be banned.

those ponds need to be emptied and the water treated. the mine needs to close or pass compensation to all those effected by the spill from the mine.

Because poor people have little power to oppose big corporations and the government. It always happens to the people that have no voice. Profits before people is the name of the game. Money and power is the root of all evil.

@@obedientconsumer5056 Small correction, money is not the root of all evil. The love of money is the root of all evil. It may seem insignificant, but it is completely different thing. FYI: Original quote: 1 Timothy 6:10 Revised Geneva Translation For the desire of money is the root of all evil; for which some - while lusting after it - have erred from the faith and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

@Amanda B who is the government? Why are they doing that? Isn't there more efficient and better ways? And why do it in richer countries and not go for the actual poor ones?

@Amanda B you imply that this was the government's doing, but the incident has corporate negligence written all over it. While I would agree that the govt could do more, the fact of the matter is that much like the Bhopal Gas Leak in India, it's not the fault of the government that this travesty happened.

Worse than Baia Mare occurred on Feb 13, 2024 in Copler mine, Erzincan, Turkiye operated by SSR mining (nasdaq code SSRM). Baia Mare was snow-caused overflowing of cyanide pool, Copler had a landslide, caused by improper and reckless mining. SSRM will be liable for damages to ecosystem, in particular water system including Euphrates river extending from Erzincan towards Syria. Copler mine was permitted by Turkish Environmental Ministry headed by Murat Kurum, current candidate for Istanbul mayor on Mar 31 local elections.

The worst thing anyone watching this video can do is get the wrong message: know that the blame for this incident lies primarily on the company who failed to maintain an effective means of waste confinement, much like the Coal Ash spill at Kingston, Tennessee. While the Romanian government is not innocent in the matter, they are not the chief perpetrator in this event, and as such one should not get up in political arms about it. To the person who has been attempting to do so in the comments below, a) you know who you are, and b) yes I am calling you out. Stop it.
