Deadly Chickens

Deadly Chickens (2015): Benin's impoverished population survive on imported, cheap frozen chickens from Europe and the US. But relying on cast-off chickens is putting local farmers out of work and posing serious health risks.

In Benin, 150,000 tonnes of foreign poultry passes through the main port every year. For the countries of origin, it is a convenient way to offload tough old hens. While for the people of Benin, the cheap and widely available chicken is a welcome source of meat. "Laying hens are a bit tough for European tastes", says importer Kenneth Adiho, "but we love them". However, the imported meat has dealt a heavy blow to local farmers. Once a profession for young entrepreneurs, Agriculture is now doomed. "The importing of frozen chicken is killing the youth and they will react by flocking to the Western world", predicts one out-of-work farmer. In a country where nearly 50% are under 15 this could have serious implications. Moreover, defrosted, exposed to sunlight, and then refrozen, the poultry risks being infected by bacteria that can cause diseases like salmonella. There is yet to be a national survey on the dangers of the meat and in the markets sanitation inspections rarely take place.

easily said than done. The leaders who try to do something are easily replaced by locals with big help fom the west on the gounds of "dictatorship", "corruption", "war lords", "blood thirsty", and so on...only to end up with bad leaders align with the west that you dont hear on tv due to economic interests. Ask yourself why is Benin still using the Franc CFA as a currency? A currency created and managed by france. If you ask me, people should start creating better living conditions for themselvs, and the whole country will get better. There is only so much that any government can do about it. Not any kind of people. But the rich one and the educated one should take the first step. It doesnt take much to creat a poultry. You just need to make it grow in order to reduce the unitary cost of each chicken/hen.

It's something the US and other countries do where they force a smaller, poorer country into an agreement (like we did with the fruit companies in South American countries) that get them to buy our product duty free, and our product gets sold at a better price than local farmers can keep up with, forcing said country to rely on imports rather than their own domestic product, keeping them poor.

Hey..I take exception to that statement..I raise chickens and they are very well cared for. They are not caged, have a large outdoor paddock in which to roam (I am in a forest and there are many predators), and have an indoor coop area with fresh water, different foods..and lots of places to roost. In cold weather, I cook oatmeal for them and they get fresh veg every day like apples, carrots, greens and squash. The eggs my Rhode Island Reds lay are the size of jumbo eggs in the store without any antibiotics or hormones; and, right now, my meat chickens are in the freezer. In fact, I cooked one yesterday and it was so flavorful, you just knew it was not from the store.

My recipe. Cut the old hen into big pieces. Roast some green chillies and tomatoes until they become mushy. Smash those together into a paste, now put ginger paste and garlic paste, a bit of red pepper flakes mix it all together. Turn the stove on, Put the chicken and all the ingredients in a wok/pan...add salt. Slowly simmer it on medium flame while occasionally stirring it, always with a lid on, After about 20 mins add 2-3 cups of water and some whole or big potato chunks into the dish. Cover and cook until the whole potatoes are done...all on medium flame. Garnish with cilantro or culantro(culantro gives better aroma) and spices. Eat with rice or whatever ur staple is. Thank me later.

I'm constantly astonished by these documentaries on, and my experiences with, Africans and African immigrants who came to the USA. They're such determined, hard-working, genuine people. That guy who sold the frozen chicken was making lots of money for someone in his country, but he's still hoping for better so his country can finally begin working for itself, rather than rely on scraps from other countries. That woman who runs the stall is easily harder-working than most of the people I know over here. I just wish there were better conditions and more quality inspection there. I have no doubt there's a lot of smart, hard-working Benin people who if given the chances we have in the West, could benefit their country with an education in the food sciences.

They seem to be doing a good job. These chickens are sitting all day doing nothing and only getting fatter. That’s why they are so dirty. They can’t bother stand up when they shit.

Nzm Ak natural selection is utilized throughout the industry to develop the fast growing modern broiler. Natural selection was also used to develop the distinct dog breeds we know today. Combine this broiler with the optimal nutrition given to them through feed and you have a 6-7 pound broiler very quickly.

Why did the narrator have to tell her that the French don't like eating the retired chickens so they either end up in pet food or sold to humans who like them? Those are the chickens these people like and there's nothing wrong with that! There was no need to make the poor woman feel insulted by other people's preferences. The French aren't making a comparison of humans to pets in supplying chicken to paying customers! Most of the French people probably don't have a clue where the chickens they don't want to eat end up. There's a demand for older, tougher chicken in Benin because that's just when they typically have always slaughtered their birds. It's not any kind of personal insult but this narrator sure will draw the comparison, rub it in and make the woman feel distained! I felt so sad when her face screwed up like that. Feeling insulted from half a world away by people who have no idea they've given any offence just because of this tactless twit!

U never generalise Asian, American or European countries. Stop this Africa has more than 50 countries some are not doing well, others are better others are worse. U always talk like u know everything in the world, u don't have any authority or knowledge to generalise our countries. We are not perfect but our struggles n success differ from country to country.

Interesting video. I have raised chicken for my own consumption for years - both for eggs and for meat, and I do feel the mass production is unethical. In my country, Norway, the egg layers are gassed to death after reaching productivity slow down. Then they are treated as garbage, just thrown away or used in concrete as a binding agent. A hen is NOT to be considered as dog or cat food, but as European markets are flooding with cheap, tender cheap factory chicks, people nowadays do not even know how to enjoy the hen meat. So what is wrong with saving those hen carcasses and ship them in frozen condition across the sea to a poor country? The problem is how the meat is handled by ignorant vendors. There should be strict laws as to who are allowed to sell fresh or frozen meat in a market or a shop, with frequent inspections to secure that they follow the rules. Let the vendors go through a course where they are informed about dangers of contamination and how to avoid it. The govermnent of Benin might of course increase the import duties slightly so the local producers can compete, yes. But then people would criticize them for that too! Stock fish from Northern Norway is a very important source of protein and marine nutrition for many Africans, but some countries have very high import duties on it, thus punishing the population who are forced to spend more money. I am sure that people in Benin could find many other ways to earn a living than competing with EU frozen chicken products. Let there be a choice for people to get cheap food, and those who can afford it and are informed about the quality differences should buy the local fresh meat - if they want to.

Why eat meat at all? I am a vegetarian and only use dairy and soy for protein sources. Nothing dies for me to live. I am 48 years old and been a life long bodybuilder. I curl 132 pound(60kg) kettlebells with one arm for reps. I lift heavy weights and can sprint quite fast. So I have done well without consuming meat. I think if westerners had to kill their own food, not allow a factory to do it for them, many would become vegetarians from the disgust of killing living creatures that want to live as well.

You missed the point. It's killing local farming efforts and businesses. It's greed in the government. If you were selling your chickens after spending all that time and effort trying to provide for your family and your country allowed so much imported chicken into the country it was killing your production would you understand

@Svovelpredikanten, i am gonna answer your question without all the bullshit you threw in. One what is wrong with it, European government subsidies this particular industry indirectly. Second, if you important everything you are exporting your countries wealth. Three when you important basic food stuff, you stifle the growth of a industry in the country you are importing it to. Benin is a poor country because of historical reasons and as long as the important government subsidies foods, they will continue to be poor.
