Europe's royals attend funeral for Greece's last king Constantine II
European royalty gathered Monday in Athens, Greece for the funeral of former King Constantine II, who ruled just three years in the 1960s before being forced into exile. The military junta abolished the monarchy in 1973, with a referendum among the public a year later making it official.
Constantine II was a second cousin of Britain's King Charles III and godfather to Prince William. He lived most of his life abroad, but returned to his homeland in his latter years. He died last week at the age of 82.
Monday's service, officiated by the country's Archbishop, was private, to reflect Constantine's status as a former king.

The greek royals are much more respected and well known in Europe than the government and President. I knew who king Constanine II and Queen Anne-Marie, and their eldest son, current King Pavlos (I refuse to say prince) are, but despite me following European politics (I’m Finnish), I have absolutely no idea whatsoever, who the Prime minister or President of Greece are. And the Greek royals sat in much better places during the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II than the President did.

There is a lovely Documentary on him on BBC SOME years back.after Greeks voted to abolish monarchy he visited his nation in 2002 .Spoke why he chose to abdicate after the Coup detat in late 1960's.very dignified.

"Memory Eternal" King Constantine had the possibility of being the best king Greece ever experienced. His education and experience under his father, King Paul was important. It's a shame that horrible PASOK (Pan Hellenic Socialist Movement) had been so critical of the Greek monarchy that it was abolished by plebisite in 1977. I was pleased to see that his eldest son was named for his paternal grandfather. Queen Ann Marie was awfully beautiful, even in old age.

In 1900 Cyprus was part of the Turkish Ottoman Empire but under British administration. In 1900 the only Republics in Europe were France and San Marino. By 1950 the only European monarchies left were the UK (including Gibraltar, Malta and Cyprus), Belgium, The Netherlands, Greece, Monaco, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, Andorra, The Vatican, Norway., Denmark and Sweden. The Spanish monarchy was restored in the 1970s a few years after Greeces was abolished

I think it's because he is only allowed to attend state funerals of official heads of state. It's unfortunate that Prince William couldn't attend, as King Constantine II was his godfather.
