Yes, when we go back and watch all of England's performances over the last 35 years, with the exception of Mexico '86, Italia '90, Euro '96 and Korea 2002, England's inadequacies are evident in comparison to today. England were either cheated, underachieved due to not playing as a team or defended quite poorly. Southgate to be honest, though cautious and pragmatic, deserves a medal for what he has achieved in the time he has been manager and should not be going anywhere soon, even if England do not win Euro 2020/21.

England were pretty crap, BUT.... in qualifying, that Iceland team beat Holland, then went to Amsterdam and did it again to prove it was no fluke. In the tournament itself, they beat a fancied Austrian team, drew with the eventual winners, and stuck two goals past France. England were indeed crap ... but have some respect for an Iceland side that was far far better than it looked on paper - and proved it several times.

@@walterg9321 you say that but that team against Croatia had some pretty average players, Scott Carson in goal, Peter Crouch up front with Darren Bent coming in at the end, starting Shaun Wright Philips over Beckham, starting Wayne Bridge over Ashley Cole and Micah Richards at right back aged about 18. England now are much more technically gifted than 2006-2016, they were average for those 10 years. Steve McLaren tried to be too clever with his selections, coming in and dropping Beckham... Putting untested goalkeeper in goal for such an important match, it was embarrassing.

@@danielthompson6448 Leave the game against croatia aside. For the qualifiers he had Stevie G, Lampard, Ferdinand, JT, Ashley Cole, Jamie Carragher, Gary Neville and Wayne Rooney. All of the above would either have won (or were on the course to winning) the league or champions league at their respective clubs. And although I agree in 2016 there was more talent, none of them had any real experience of winning anything (mainly because most of them came from Tottenham who can't win shite lol). Even through your point on Steve McLaren's choice selection clearly showed he was the worst. And even if the rest of the squad was mediocre in 2007-2008, it wasn't bad enough to not qualify for euros.

For those hating on Southgate, Saka, Sancho, Rashford etc, please look at THIS England squad and manager. Our current England team (as of me writing this in 2021) would beat the shit out of this 2016 England squad, undeniably. Southgate made mistakes with his penalty takers in the final. But that does not take away what he has achieved and hopefully he will go one step further the next few times. He brought us from a humiliating Iceland loss in 90 mins to runners-up to an Italian side that we should have no shame in losing to in penalties if I'm being honest.

Southgate is still awful now We had a fantastic early goal and we were really positive in the first half. Then everyone just seemed to switch off We started getting dominated in midfield, so what does Southgate do? Nothing. Takes off Tripper and then the midfield collapses even more and we were playing from the back for the rest of the game through to extra time No Sancho, no foden, no Grealish until it was too late, but never mind he brings on Henderson who was terrible as well, and leaves on Mount for the whole game who was having a terrible game. Was a poor decision, which even Southgate himself said so. But Sterling or Grealish should have stepped in. That said, he'll learn. You can't get to two semi-finals and a final without playing well.

If we played each other 10 times do you think you'd win 3? Arrogant English blah blah blah........we beat you because we've better players. You know it because it's obvious! All our players play in same leagues and are far less technical than foreign players because of the way they're trained from youth as opposed to foreign training and emphasis. That's why they hold the ball better.....not genetics!! And England are better than scots Welsh and Irish because of bigger catchment/population. Your fans have a chip on shoulder because of same mentality in leagues. Everyone hates the bigger clubs. England are the biggest club .........and small man syndrome hurts boys. True true

The best thing being the pragmatic approach of the manager. He tempers the rabid media expectations and by doing relaxes the fans and the players. Does he want to manage the team to victory? Clearly. He’s made massive changes in the England set-up behind the scenes to create the culture in the squad, but international football is ridiculously hard. Sometimes the best teams don’t win and these tournaments don’t happen that often. Might we lose to Denmark or Italy or Spain? Maybe, but he’s getting the team used to being this high up in competitions, he’s able to look at opponents and try to figure them out to get the best out of his squad, and all the players, even big ego ones all understand that THIS manager has a plan. It’s an interesting time to be a fan.

The best was the interview with Evra on ITV before this game. The English reporter asking Evra will they beat England. Evra says...you have to play iceland first huh? Classic English media 😂😂

Yes, when we go back and watch all of England's performances over the last 35 years, with the exception of Mexico '86, Italia '90, Euro '96 and Korea 2002 England's inadequacies are evident in comparison to today. England were either cheated, underachieved due to not playing as a team or defended quite poorly. Southgate to be honest, though cautious and pragmatic, deserves a medal for what he has achieved in the time he has been manager and should not be going anywhere soon, even if England do not win Euro 2020/21.
