France was how I learned EU4 years ago. I tried Muscovy and got screwed over by Denmark, tried Poland and my expansion stagnated and I fell way behind on tech. France was the first one I played all the way to 1820 and it taught me a lot of the basics and important things as a new player then

I tried so many guides playing Castille because everyone said it's the best newcomer nation but I kept getting shit on, then I tried a guide playing as France and so much about the game clicked. I ended up forgetting that I was following the guide and played blindly for like 7 hours straight because I finally wasn't getting wiped out by rebels, a smaller nation, or half of Europe. I still have no idea how to play but it's the most fun I've had with a game in a while.

I remember I played a game as Aragon in 1.32 where by the time 1500 came around nobody had Exploration or Expansion yet. I got my PU over Castile super early, used the mission tree to enforce my PU over Portugal really early as well and while fighting England in that war got them destroyed, as did France who fought the Hundred Years war the the same time. France dipped out first and since I had control over much of the French holdings, France had England release lots of countries in the Isles, and then I did the same such that England was beset by Wales, North Umberland, Cornwall, Mann and Meath. They ended up taking Religious and Maritime ideas. France ended up taking Offensive and Economic, I think Portugal went Humanist and Naval while Castile went Religious and Defensive or something like that. It was a weird game though, for sure. I wonder how long it would have taken for Colonialism to spawn and who would have spawned it if I didn't take Exploration when I formed Spain.

Only thing I'd do differently is release Provence, so that you can beg for cores back instead of fighting the pope. (This method also removed their cores, so it stops them from *ever* wanting them again. Which, you're france, you want the pope to love you 100% of the time)

If you can ally Burgundy and they havent done it on their own i highly recommend to feed them the provencial lands in Lorraine and land from Savoy. You re using their AE and then you ll get the inheritance. Its free real estate. Restarting until they re not your rival but Austrias helps. Improving relations while fighting England always turns Burgundy into friendly if they re not your rival.

great guide for beginners but i'd add a few things to the guide, i'm no expert but i did a 1.34 france WC in normal ironman mode: - DO NOT ally poland and if you can do anything to weaken them short of war do it. this is because later in the game you get a mission that lets you VASSALIZE them. not PU, VASSALIZE. feel free to crash your game until they refuse the union with lithuania. if they grow strong they'll have way too much dev to ever be loyal - imo you should restart until burgundy is friendly to you, burgundian inheritance is 150% worth it as you get half of the lowlands instantly cored and integrated later when mary of burgundy dies. this'll greatly accelerate your HRE mission tree - if aragon keeps the PU over naples and spain forms don't feel bad because all that land is as good as yours thanks to missions. you get claims on all of naples through the mission and later a restoration of union cb on spain. so if you start out allied to spain make sure to break your alliance at some point - if you feel comfortable with the game i'd say no-cb byzantium but that's a bit advanced - it's better to build a foothold in ireland asap AND revoke your guarantee with scotland, this is because if you have some forts in ireland you can trap the army on the isle as long as you control the strait crossing. i'd say let england annex scotland as you build your power base in ireland -> take a scottish province when you invade england -> release scotland as a vassal, you get reconquest CB with way less AE. can do the same with northumberland. every game is different but if you can cripple the ottomans early on (and you should be able to if you no-cb byz) north africa can wait - try to go for diplo ideas first so you can get elected as emperor of the HRE, though you might have to just dismantle it. but most of my game i was over my diplo limit by 2 or 3 because i had so many vassals. diplo (edit: influence) ideas reduce diplo annexation cost by 25% i think and there's an admin policy that requires diplo and admin ideas done that further reduces diplo annex cost by 20%. there's no reason not to take it. + if austria expands a ton cut them down to size and make them release a bunch of states, don't be scared of going to war as your troops are amazing bonus points: - feel free to declare on a weak HRE minor just so you can be at war with austria to cut them down to size. styria and tirol can be released, if you're really lucky you might be able to diplo-vassalize styria which is huge lol. but my advice is don't worry about europe too much, focus on building your power base early on by no-CBing byz and smashing ottos before mil tech 5. you get claims on some of india through missions too, 100% worth it to get expansion to colonize the cape of africa for colonial range into the moluccas and malaysia. the reason you shouldn't worry about europe too much is that you can focus on it when you go revolutionarly in the early 1700s you get crazy rev zeal which gives you insane admin efficiency and you can very quickly annex client states with huge dev, i diploannexed a client state with germany's modern borders in what 7 years?

Also don't add all provinces to a trade company, just add enough to get the bonus merchant. Non-trade company provinces get a goods produced bonus, just leave the rest as territories to help with gov cap.

I'd recommend allying Scotland and promising land so that in the first war England and Portugal send all their troops there rather than trying to stop you. Plus build seven heavy ships and engage the English navy once you've peaced out Portugal, make sure to not fight England while bordering their coast and you should sink enough ships so that they don't attack you when crossing the channel

I'm always terrified of fighting the pope, even though they'd be easily beaten it's the ramifications I'm worried about. They can be a huge pain in the butt with excommunications. I have found that warning the pope will prevent them from declaring on Provence. Then you can guarantee the pope if you don't want to ally them for the relations boost after warning them. I don't know if you can warn them then ally them and it will still prevent them from declaring.

Hmmm.. An alternative strategy I've done 10 times as France is to get like 25 000 men in Scotland (ally him + mil access) and keep only +-5k on the continent. Declare war while calling scotland in with promise of land. That will mean 40K troops in northern england and will fix all their armies there. During this time, ask all your vassal to attach your 5K, siege England on the mainland, beat the portugese back and after that just go siege him. A white peace with portugal is not a bad thing. You can attack him again later for Ceuta. Oh, and of course during all of this you will be able to siege all of England... Take all your cores + Pale + some money. After the war, if England ally any irish minor, attack this ally, separate peace england for 700 ducats to reset truce and *VOILÀ* .

Why do you seperate peace portugal in the first war? if you dont, you are at like 85% warscore. With that you can take every province in France, Dublin and the on Africa from Portugal.

Actually, i dont think you want to feed all of Lorraine and province to burgundy. Last time i gave them all 4 provinces, they immediately made a rival of me, even when we had been friendly all game. I think it might unluck a mission o theirs, giving them more claims on you.
