@@scented-leafpelargonium3366 speed limits used to be there for safety, but "safe" is a relative construct. Now it's about adjusting for other deficiencies, such as skill (which people allow to deteriorate over time without top up training) or attention (in short supply). A lower speed limit allows for greater chance for people to detect, think and react but that's treating a secondary problem rather than the root cause. Speed limits used to be judged on the 85th percentile and were statistically driven. Now they're decided upon by people who have no clue what they are doing and are usually using emotive and assertive arguments. Driving is about making progress. Modern living demands this and comparing to horse and cart is just a silly argument. If you really believe that, get out of the car and walk or ride... But those two would be far less safe than driving... Better make sure you walk slower. That'll make it safer.... Right?

@@ts757arse Well a hardened drinker might have more control over a vehicle than a teenage girl who never had alcohol before but only had one drink like him to the legal limit (UK), yet the control of the vehicle and the affect of the alcohol would be quite different for both personalities. So speeding is relative when it comes to safety, yet legal measures are in place for both drinking while driving and speeding. Being law abiding may not always guarantee safety, but consideration for others is seriously lacking as the roads belong to everyone, not just racers. I sense a measure of sarcasm in your response so perhaps I am unwise to respond back.

My Honda e does similar, it doesn't brake the car just cuts power (i guess the golf is the same). All that is required is a sharp press of the accelerator to override so no/little chance of being rear ended. It's not a big deal to be honest unless you're a driver who does not pay attention (someone my beep thier horn) or tailgates so closely that a car that is slowing down causes you to need to brake (the tailgater's fault) .

I completely agree with your thoughts.I bought my MG4 in Nov 2022 and the dealership had disabled the driver alert system as it was so bad. The speed limit sign recognition system frequently reads signs on slip roads and side roads and often does not differentiate between a single carriageway with a 60 limit a dual carriageway at 70. All it displays is a flashing light which is not distracting now that I'm used to it.I'm all for safety improvements where they work but this blanket legislation is daft.

We have a 'speed limiter' on our car ( a Volvo). It is not a limiter as such, as it does not limit your speed. It's called Intelligent Speed Assist (ISA). It advises you that you are speeding, either audibly or with an option to turn on 'Adaptive pedal response' (you turn that on in a menu). If you want to speed you still can. It's a 'Jiminy Cricket' for the driver. In the case of the audible option it is fine. You get used to the beeps, and they aren't too loud. It is especially good in the ever increasing number of 20 mph zones that we have. I tried the 'Adaptive pedal response' option and turned it off again (went back to the audible). The reason being that both options rely on Traffic Sign recognition. At times, this can be a bit patchy in terms of quality. Nearby to where I live Google has a stretch of 'A' road incorrectly tagged as 30 mph. With 'Adaptive pedal response' turned on I went right at a roundabout, re-joining the 'A' road at what should have been 70 mph. It was recognised as 30 mph. As I tried to accelerate there was a reduction in power when I went above 30 mph, it was brief and I quickly over-rode it. I didn't like that. I like technology but the 'Adaptive pedal response' isn't quite there yet because of the traffic sign recognition. It will get there though. You can turn off ISA, each time you get in the car, a simple press of a button on the steering wheel. I really did think that I would turn off ISA each time I got in the car but I don't. We've kept the audible option on, and I report incorrect traffic sign recognition to Google Maps. I realise that not all will want this feature or like it. Just my experience.

My 2012 SLK has a speed limit warning - I set it at 5 mph above the limit. I get a voice saying 'please obey the speed limit'. It doesn't apply the brakes but given how many people I know have had speeding tickets for minor infringements a warning is a useful thing. Having said that I set the speed limiter to the speed limit a lot of the time because it's more relaxing than making sure I don't go over the speed limit by constantly watching the speedo I certainly think it means that in my part of the country there's absolutely no point in a powerful car - not only are speed limits well policed but they have been reduced in many cases too.

I personally think it's a great idea, but perhaps the systems need to be modified so that the systems are seamlessly integrated and are NOT a distraction... you simply can't take your car above the speed limit. That said, as automation creeps into our vehicles, and they become electrified, and in the absence of a decent train system, I think there's an argument for increasing the speed limit in the fast lane of motorways to 80mph, but maybe that's when all the fossil fuelled vehicles are off the road. The problem has been drivers who swallow all the marketing about driving being a sport, propagated by programs like Top Gear. Yes, it can be a sport, off the public roads, but when you're on the public roads, a car is a utilitarian thing, to get you from A to B in a comfortable and convenient fashion. Personally, I don't believe they belong in cities, but I love cars and have always owned one, and now only use it to escape the city. Perhaps once our trains start working for people and not for profit, we can start getting sensible fares and then I won't need a car anymore 🙂... at least not to own one.

The fact that most cars make regular errors reason road signs and some of the alerts being used are insanely distracting are good reasons why it’s perhaps not so well thought out too. Our speed limits seem to be getting lower and fines more regular whilst cars have ABS, disc brakes and collision mitigation tech now, unlike when the limits were originally set.

This safety feature can work well, but it does rely on the technology working as expected. For example, problems arise when the camera picks up a lower speed limit sign on a nearby road and the car suddenly slows down, not good when you have cars travelling close behind you. Outdated navigation data can also catch you out when speed limit changes are not communicated to the suppliers. The recent change to default speed limits in wales have made this feature a nightmare. New 20 mph signs are being recognised by the camera and the car slows as expected, but then further down the road the map data will override this and you can find yourself exceeding the limit. Most driver are going to turn this safety feature off, unless: - speed limit signs are positioned so that they are visible only on the road to which they apply, - car cameras can accurately read the speed limit, - governments make speed limit data freely and openly available in a timely manner, - camera recognised speed limits take priority over navigation data speed limits to allow for temporary/newly introduced changes, - car navigation systems are automatically and frequently updated with the latest speed limit data.

Having left a 30 mph zone and entered a 50 mph zone, it continued its annoying alarm warning me incorrecly that I was still in a 30 mph zone. Manufacturers have a long way to go in making these systems accurate. Most drivers will turn these systems off anyway as no doubt they will be made compulsory.

I feel the push for the driverless car is what is driving the tech which makes all this possible. As for the way the tech is applied, I agree a fog horn blast for evety mistake is over the top, it should respond the same as the majority of drivers do, it just takes the power away so you coast until you reach the speed limit. But as you said they have to be more accurate. Maybe the the road signs should be more active so they give a warning of speed changes, so the vehicle tech is only responding to teh local changes. Just a thought.

Being an HGV speed limiters are old hat. However I see a mega problem when it comes to smaller vehicles. Most new cars have a deliberate 5% error on their speed, ie; 33 is 30, 44 is 40 up to 77 is 70 so a car doing 40 is only doing 36 older cars will obviously overtake the slower vehicle even though his speedometer tells him he is doing 40. This error is most prominent on motorway speed restrictions.

My concern is when the car reads the incorrect speed. There’s a section on the m25 near Heathrow that has a 40mph dual carriage way running along side . My 2020 Mercedes pops up a warning when I’m driving on the m25 left lane at 60mph saying it’s a 40mph. Imagine this beeping at you or worse braking automatically. I guess perhaps they should do the clever thing and move the 40mph sign to the other side of the carriage way. As for speeding I think it can only be a good for thing, as someone who lives on a 30mph road that’s quite busy it’s shocking the number of drivers going over. The difference in life and death hitting a pedestrian is huge. And we have a lot of schools nearby and kids are everywhere at school run time.

GPS being used for speed limits is going to be problematic, as it looks as though the databases for the speed limits of roads is not being kept up-to-date correctly. I was on holiday in Wales recently and using Google Maps navigation from my phone, and it was very often displaying the wrong speed limit. This has been exacerbated by the introduction of the default 20mph speed limit in urban areas/city centres, so speed limits have changed. Looks like there needs to be more information sharing between district councils/highways authority and Google and other GPS services to correct this. Was often unsure what speed I was supposed to be driving at, which is dangerous (even driving too slow can be dangerous, as then others take risks to pass a very slow driver). It also seems that many 40mph roads in Wales have been changed to 30mph recently. Others will have commented I guess about auto reading of speed signs, one of the Electrifying youtubers was saying her car was reading suggested speed signs that were not speed limits (e.g. for going round bends), but the car was telling her she must do that speed, even though the bit of road affected had been left some time ago. The car would not reset until it had seen another speed limit sign, which of course are not required on national speed limit or 30mph zones.

My Honda e does this, it doesn't brake the car just cuts power. All that is required is a sharp press of the accelerator to override, so no/little chance of being rear-ended should it misread a sign. It's not a big deal to be honest unless you're a driver who does not pay attention (someone may beep thier horn) or tailgates so closely that a car that is slowing down causes you to need to brake (the tailgater's fault) . It may reduce the number of drivers that speed then brake when they pass a speed camera, only to accelerate again. You can of course still speed if you wish, however, when you get caught there is pretty much zero excuse as you would have gone to some effort to commit the offence and not just been a bit absent minded as you car slowly crept up in speed.

The tiredness alerts are annoying. I was only saying the other day that they should be linked to your journey or driving time and the type of road you’re on. If the car detects you’re driving towards a white line, yawning, eyes closing and you’ve been driving a long time then sure blast away. A few minutes into a drive when you’re singing along to a song it thinks my singing is a yawn. My yawns sound better than my singing.

😂 it’s far better in some cars than others, it needs proper investment and standardisation if it’s got any chance of actually improving safety. There should be a focus on better driving and fewer distractions.

@@DefinitelyNotAGuru I agree but nobody wants to spend the money assessing roads as to safe limits at specified times. The speed limits were a made up number. However there are more and more distractions for drivers these days, I’m sure we’ve all been behind a white van veering from left to right as they read their phones. 20 mph have their place, outside schools when parents and children and going to or leaving. Maybe some town centres where busy shoppers just launch themselves in front of cars while the pedestrian crossing is just ten metres away. There’s little thought into most of these ideas and you wonder if any of them actually drive cars. One thought though, how will they make money from the motorist if they haven’t got speeding fines. Oh wait, they’ll just squeeze more in other ways.

I was waiting for the ‘learn to drive safely’ safety comment. I do - and amazingly haven’t had any accidents in over 40 years. I do stick to the limits currently. Whilst I realise that going over the set limit is not legal, it is also frustrating to follow behind a cyclist doing 15 mph for ages because you can’t exceed the limit, even for a couple of seconds. This will, in itself, cause frustration and potentially unsafe overtaking. Another one - overtaking someone on a motorway, move into the outside lane at 70 to pass, to find that the other cars in the outside lane are going somewhat faster and approaching you too quickly for comfort. I’m not saying that the speeding cars are ok, only that I am seeing a potentially worrying scenario. Also, I challenge anyone who drives regularly to say with hand on heart that they always stay within the speed limit.

I got my first speeding ticket last week due to driving between cats on a 30mph outskirts road where most of the traffic always drive at 40, and to drive at 30 enrages most of them, so I got caught doing 37mph, due to the constant pressure to drive over the speed limit. It appears to make sense, a good idea, however it goes against human nature when you're trying to get somewhere in the best time possible coz you have too for work or such in a limited time, so being very restricted just ends-up giving the feeling of frustration to add to the other little stresses of life - it seems silly but that's people for you. Most "speeders" aren't even _excessively_ speeding and those that do are the type to always over-speed and will find a way past the rules whilst everyone else just mooches along. Once again all have to suffer for the few. Not all roads are appropriately speed limited, some too fast, some too slow - there are many roads that were 30 and now 20 that are wide, long and no schools, etc. that feel painfully slow to drive especially during non-peak times. I have the feeling that many of the commentors that are saying "this is the best thing ever" are likely retired or in the easier time in their lives when don't feel the need or the energy to want to get around quickly, and the others are the green lobby that believe no-one should be driving - seriously the only way for true safety & top eco-efficiency would be to stop private ownership of automobiles and no-one to travel more than 5 miles from their place of residence. Only robot guided hire vehicles & public transport for local travel, trains for further away of which you'll need a travel permit to leave the local zone and you can't can't do that more than twice a year. Motorbikes banned for safety, pollution & noise reasons. Cycles & e-scooters limited to 5mph using more electronic gizmos _and_ you'll need insurance & permits for those too. There are still those who like to just go out for a drive but with so many restrictions & controls, along with the amount of traffic and poor condition of the roads, that even if you play within the rules you'll feel unfulfilled for doing so. The dream of automotive freedom is being erased and all those car adverts expressing freedom & pleasure should be banned! All we need are basic square boxes that can't go more than 20mph - basically milk-floats from a single worldwide manufacturer and we'll all be better-off - won't we??

I have a 2016 BMW that has a speed limiter, it's a voluntary one that you have to set yourself. I think this is great and I am sure it has saved me from going over the limit on multiple occasions. I just have to remember to set it as I enter a road that has a different limit, say an urban area or near a school. It would help if it could read the road signs and/or use GPS data to set the limit. However, I would prefer if it just spoke the speed limit as I entered a new speed limit and perhaps asked me if I wanted to obey it by perhaps saying yes or no or pressing a button. It scares me that my car might suddenly apply the breaks, as you suggest, because it read a 30mph sign on an adjacent road to the motorway. I can see miscreants putting up fake signs on motorways.... 10mph ? But and it’s a very big but, when the local council are responsible for setting the correct gps speed limit correctly which they frequently don’t, the driver isn’t responsible if the car doesn’t know the speed limit. Where I live I can take you down a 30 mph limit road that gps says is 80 mph! All this traffic sign recognition bullshit is just that. It’s gps set by the council that displays the speed limit and adaptive cruise control that cars use. You get one side of the road with one limit and the other with a different one. Local authorities need to ensure their staff set the gps exactly and not to a random point on a map they seem to select. According to gps the M62 east to Manchester has a 50 mph limit that was actually lifted to 70 many months ago when the “smart motorway” works were completed. So speed limiters just ain’t going to work plus, to my knowledge a vehicle speedometer must be specially calibrated for accuracy and very regularly so who is going to pay for that?

Well we do drive on the left hand side of the road compaired to Most of the EU driving on the right so they already do make something different for the UK market. And what about cars being sold to the rest of the world, from the EU will the american or asian markets have to adapt to EU regulations or will manufacturers make adjustments for these markets.

If compulsory in the EU, expect the Police across the EU to check all cars, requiring them to ensure they are fitted and prosecuted and impound cars if not. My Tesla dings if speed is over the limit, which is annoying, and I would prefer a limiter as I have experience with this, albeit, in my last Mitsubishi, it was manual. I had to remember to turn it on for cameras on downhill stretches, where it was easy to exceed the limit and risk a fine and points for no reason. In use, a limiter is easy and natural to override to avoid an accident; just put your foot hard down on the accelerator. I hope a Tesla update will give the option to use a limiter on all vehicles and turn off the wretched dings.

Just raise the speed limits such as the Motorway limit which is ancient and outdated to 81 mph as per Europe. It far safer and leads to much less bunching, better lane discipline and people driving so closely. The worst drivers by far are those who sit in the middle lane or in a lorries blind spot doing 60 mph. The warning should be to keep left at all times and if you don’t the car takes you to the next services and won’t start again until you have been on a motorway course.

As an able bodied 67 year old I take my life in my hands every time I cross the Main Street. We have a Zebra crossing - even that isn’t safe to use as it is universally ignored by speeders.

@@wileywilson because of the trunk road we cannot have the 20mph limit, the minimum has to be 30mph. All the other villages around are 20mph limits but it’s not enforced. Last year we were told that the plan was to have average speed cameras like the yellow gantries on motorways installed but the council ran out of money………… we now get a Police Traffic Safety Camera van parked in the Main Street among the parked cars sometimes daily, and that has proved to the authorities by the amount of people it catches how big the problem is. Had to laugh at one of my neighbors who is one of the main agitator for average speed cams who was recently caught driving passed the camera can at 39mph………..

If you peg it in an accident they won't have to worry about your old age pension and medical NHS money you might have incurred during the rest of your life!
