EU has criticized Berlin for dragging its heels on ban | DW News

After a long dispute, the German government and German mobile network operators have agreed on a comprehensive ban on Chinese 5G technology. The compromise took the form of a public-law contract to prevent claims for damages.
Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser saw an urgent need for action because she wanted to protect
Germany against the risks of sabotage and espionage in the expansion of the networks.
Under the compromise, providers will have more time to make the switch and can continue to use basic elements from Huawei and ZTE. In return, the providers commit to a nationwide replacement - and not just in geographical proximity to federal ministries and sensitive institutions.
The critical components may no longer be used in the core network by the end of 2026. These are the central 5G data centers for data transmission. In the second step, the access and transport networks, such as radio masts, will be affected.

A year ago, one of the ISPs in my area started phasing out ZTE ONT's on their network although they were very good function and high-quality product to replace them with some EU made ones, a real piece of garbage, poor performance and poor quality. We use to build really good electronics and now we aren't able to build a simple ONT which is nothing but a box with a small PCB. Made in Germany, made in Italy, made in Switzerland, these used to be the mark of quality and performance not within EU only but in the world too. Now we lost all the know-how and manufacturing and we have to kiss buts of the commies and pray we aren't spied.

I am no "cybersecurity expert" but I do know a bit of programming and checking firmware that likely consists of tens of thousands lines of code, determining what every line does is no trivial matter. You'd have to re-certify it with every software iteration too. But what's at the heart of this decision is that the US wants to remain the top dog in these lucrative communication technologies and is putting pressure on Germany as it has done with the UK and France. Plus obviously the US likes to spy too :).

Time to onboard fundamental technology for our own gain, but if governments are going to mandate where we get services from then they need to give some incentive.
