EU-China Trade Tensions: China Goes After European Brandey | Vantage with Palki Sharma
This week, the European Union's provisional tariffs into Chinese-made Electric Vehicles (EVs) took effect. In response, Beijing is intensifying its scrutiny of European imports. China has ramped up its anti-dumping investigation into European brandy. The Chinese Commerce Ministry is scheduled to hold a hearing on 18th July. Chinese officials allege European Brandy producers are selling products in China below market rates. Palki Sharma tells you more about the intensifying trade tensions.

It’s only fair for the Europeans to treat the Chinese the same way. China can sell their cars in Europe but only in a 51% European owned joint venture. Fair is fair and Europe shouldn’t treat China any differently than China treated them 20 years ago. You said as much in your post.

EU and US still living in 90s, thinking China only can trade with them. Meanwhile green energy cities are being built in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, all using Chinese engineers and technology. I've been to upcoming Indonesia capital city of Nusantara, the whole area installed with EV charging station and to all surrounding towns. Not to mention grand scale of South East Asian nations using Chinese product and service to build and maintain them. EU and US are becoming unimportant priority for Chinese investors. Then if you look at other youtube channel, similar grand projects are being planned in middle east, central asia, and africa. Anyone including those in whitehouse can tell that China future is going to be extremely prosperous and powerful. EU putting tarrif on Chinese EV impact is like a drop of coin into the ocean. Funny how media treated that as if China economy going to fall just by that.

The EU's tax increase on Chinese electric vehicles will bring a devastating blow to EU products entering the Chinese market. Not only brandy, but also pork exported by the EU to China. Far more than that, China is also preparing to impose a 25% tax on large-displacement EU cars. If so, EU cars will soon lose the Chinese market (the world's largest car market). Why did the EU increase taxes on Chinese electric vehicles? In the words of Western media, Chinese electric vehicles are currently 10-15 years ahead of the world, and European automakers simply do not have the ability to catch up with Chinese electric vehicles. In addition, the cost of Chinese cars is much lower than that of EU cars. Even if the tax is increased by 40%, Chinese electric vehicles are still competitive in Europe. From a higher strategic perspective, China's upcoming retaliation against the EU is not just aimed at the EU's tariffs on Chinese cars, but China is more looking forward to telling European countries that Europe needs to have an independent strategic vision instead of following the United States in everything. Otherwise, European countries will lose their own interests, and the United States will not pay for Europe's losses.

These countries can only raise import tariff on products with logic and after reasonable investigation following WTO's rules. I just made the comment on a lighter note.

As per EU rules of origin, substantial processing must be done in a third country to avoid tariffs. If this is done, the Chinese government will not subsidize the process as they are currently doing, making the entire process more costly. The EU's main purpose for imposing tariffs is to prevent Chinese subsidized goods from entering the EU market, in order to ensure that companies within the EU remain competitive.

The CEO of VW Germany - always the major SPD donor who is typically seen as the kingmaker deciding who heads that ailing German 'Volkspartei', and who also tends to speak for the whole industry (BMW, Audi, Opel, Porsche, Merc-Benz, etc) - has told Chancellor Scholz that such protectionism won't work. To German ears, this is as good as a motion of no confidence in the government. The same sort of thing happened when Schroeder was Chancellor: as I recall, he wasn't Chancellor for much longer after that.
