Etymotic ER4XR - The Intermezzo

Музыка

I did not buy this one to review, but did a review anyway for those curious about it. For me, this is a reference set to help me reset between reviews, the intermezzo. I bought it for a reference sound, but it does generally sound great, and perhaps the best set at $129usd for those seeking details, resolution, and accuracy.

Paul, you've really peaked my interest in these. I just got the Final A4000 and the KBEAR lark and I'm a big fan of both, very happy with this round of IEM's. I've been eyeballing etymotic for quite a while now and I've heard a lot about them being more for the pro market. I'll definitely be picking up a pair now that you've given it a look, I really trust your opinion over other reviewers because of your down to earth, straight up reviews. Thanks for putting out this vid!

First, thank you for the comment. I wasn't surprised they are very accurate, I was surprised that very accurate sounds fun and engaging. In a few minutes with them, I understood why they have been popular for 5 years and fans have multiple sets by Etymotic. Sometimes, myself included, people jump on the hype train and a set is hot for a few months. Take a look at how long people have been talking about these sets. As I said, you do need to commit to the deep fit and I certainly understand how that is not comfortable for all ears. I learned that my ear canal does turn upwards so all those videos of people grabbing their top of the ear first makes sense to me. Good luck, the Final and Lark are great sets as well. Supposedly there are other KB EAR song birds coming out soon.

@@PaulWasabii Great tip! For most people, pulling your ear up will help with the insertion of the earphone. After continued use, you might be able to insert and wiggle the earphone into the ear without having to pull it up. If the triple flange seems uncomfortable, try the double flange. For some in our office, they will get a tickling/tingly feeling and over time that feeling has disappeared. Something to think about. Thank you for the great review.

I took advantage of the adorama DEEP discount on the ER4XR and I'm in love! I've owned the ER2SE for a couple years now, but the ER4s are on another level. Only problem is that it's hard to listen to anything else since I received them. Endgame!

Ok thanks for saying something. To be honest, I keep seeing people talk about the other models recently and was wondering if I chose wrong. My gut says all the models are great in their way, but I was just surprised their wasn't more love for the ER4 at that price recently. Certainly lots of love for it in the past. I actually bought a 2.5mm cable for it partly out of fear I would break the cable. Thanks again

@@PaulWasabii Same. Not a huge fan of the cable. Although it's nicer than the ER2, it's too long and actually feels more fragile. I ordered a 4.4mm from Null Audio. Still waiting on it. I think people are turned off by the whole ba timbre thing. Honestly, that's why I waited so long. Turns out I had nothing to worry about because I probably wouldn't be able to discern a difference in most cases anyway. Imo, the warmth and clarity of the ER4XR far outweighs any negatives the single ba might bring to the table, because I can't hear anything bad about them. Of all my IEMs and headphones I think these are exactly what I find to be the most pleasing sound for me.

I have both the ER2XR and ER2SE. Mainly because I prefer a DD over BA. I must admit they are my favourite IEMs that I have ever bought. They sound so smooth and natural. I would strongly recommend these to anybody. I can wear them all day without even a hint of fatigue. They sound fantastic.

Thanks John. On paper, I had a reasonable idea of the company and their specialty. It is slightly different when you pop it in your ears and on the ER4, wrap your head around the fact it is a single BA.

I recently bought the ER2XR and was very surprised at how warm and tastefully bassy it sounds. I find the foam tips are by far the most simple and comfortable to fit and the fit is more consistent. I don't usually like how foams affect the sound in more conventional IEMs but I haven't noticed any change. I am using Comply professional series, very comfortable. I recommend trying the filter tuning kit, someone suggested it to me. I was happy with the sound but tried a different filter just out of interest and it made a very audible difference. It's worth looking up rather than me try to explain it poorly.

Would appreciate a review music list. Regarding sound stage: I have never figured out how this applies to iems. Seems like the producer of the music would need to optimize for an iem for a mention of staging to be relevant.

My main one is: tidal.com/browse/playlist/45c29422-7323-4d7b-a2fe-c6d575460410 but I have more than a few others. Stage for iems isn't that simple. I am mostly convinced some people hear it and others do not. Some people are fanatical about it and others never mention it. People who are interested but don't quite get it tend to point to tracks by Yosi Horikawa and those are produced in a way that makes stage relevant. Most people judge based on whether the instruments are primarily inside your head vs beyond your head.

I've owned these for a few years - totally killed my cravings to want to spend more on higher end items. When I bought these they were $299 or $399 or something. I too switched over to some foamy tips so I didn't feel like my ears were being violated. I got a custom cable made with a balanced termination - only wish etymotic offered a headset cable for this like they had promised years ago - just so I could have max versatility with them.

I did the same after I reviewed it. Bought a 2.5mm balanced cable which is what I use now and keep the stock in a safe place. I use the foams as well, just feels less invasive and doesn't pressure my ears as I assumed looking at the thick foam. Everything in the box is well thought out. I am debating picking up the ER2SE also.

I see that they have an impedance of 45 ohm and I believe that the ipad jack is 1.7 ohm Also which of the ER series would you recommend for EQing and mixing music in studio? 4sr, 4xr, 2se, 2xr. Can someone point me in the right direction here. I currently have the ER4SR and I'm looking for an upgrade in technical performance, sound stage, imaging, separation, dynamics while maintaining the totality and neutral frequency response of the ER4SR. I'm aware that the Etys are diffuse field neutral, but I'm also open to trying sets that might be tuned to sound like a set of flat speakers in a room as opposed to measuring flat at the eardrum. Slight base shelf is fine, timbre really important. My short list currently includes: InEar prophile 8 Monarch MK II 64 audio U12T, Noble audio kadence Shuoer EJ07M

Yes, it is invasive and very personal too. No one can tell you that they will feel ok or not. The one good thing about the ER4XR is the wide assortment of tips included which are varying degrees of invasive. For me, buying them in the US from Adorama makes it slightly easier, I could have returned them easily. But yeah, there isn't much you can do other than hold your breath and try it. Although supposed to keep your mouth open as is opens the ear canal ;)
