Etsy is going to be changing soon! (But if you're doing your job it's not bad.)

Josh Silverman spoke at a conference this week and talked about a bunch of things that are on the way, and that Etsy is focusing on this year. There was a lot of interesting discussion about how search works, and how it might be changing! Plus a big change that they said they're working on for sellers.

Honestly a lot of this sounds good, but as someone who has been on Etsy a very long time, I'll believe it when I see it. What I have seen lately is the nonstop sale, sale, sale and it is rather annoying. They constantly promote the less expensive stuff, but then say we want quality, etc. Well, sorry but if you want better quality, it WILL cost more. To make things by hand is not cheap. They want to put forth the better items, etc, but then they want us to put them on sale to get seen. This make no sense whatsoever.

It makes sense as far as knowing that people are broke and sales attract people, but i hear what you’re saying.
@penelopesparrow

When they say 'quality items' they're not necessarily saying the item itself is of higher quality, it's that the listing and the shop are. Quick process/transit, competitive shipping, offering returns, good reviews, great photos, unboxing experience, gift settings.... it's about the quality of the customer's experience. They don't care what we sell as long as it's 'legal' and the buyer loves it.
Ohhh! I'm loving the carousel idea! For too long I've wanted categories to be divided, and hopefully us handmade/artisanal sellers will get some action.

I know, I really like that one as long as it doesn't disrupt search too much. It will probably confuse people at first.

I think it would be an improvement, but I don't know what form it will take, so we'll have to wait to see.
We used to be able to make curated lists. I can’t remember what it was called, but I loved making them. Maybe treasury list or something like that? Maybe with the emphasis on curation we will get that back.

Me too!
I had something pop up yesterday that gave me the option to have items in my shop have a 'Buy more and save' thing on my listings. (Near the options) They noticed some of my listings that they were set up like that, so I had to choose which listings it was relevant for. ALSO, all of the active listings in my dashboard say 'update required'. I looked but it doesn't specify what, so I'm assuming it's a glitch?
@KaraBuntinTutorials
Ай бұрын
I think the update was taped to shipping settings, but it could be a glitch. The bundle thing is new.
I have noticed an increase in my sales. I was anticipating slow sales due to summer. They're also promoting offering buy 2 items with discount code

That’s a new badge they’ll be using, apparently.

Is there a link you can share to the conference, or what it was called? I'd like to listen to it thanks! There's been a number of strong hints in several bits of official Etsy releases lately, in their usual 'read between the lines' way there's lots of early warning signs here for people to get their ducks in a row. Putting the customer first is a bit of a hurdle for some people LOL

There's plenty of that around here most of the time, they're both on diets and they resent that.
I got a message on my dashboard asking if I would like etsy to make changes to my listings to improve them. I wish I had taken a screenshot because it disappeared.

Which is very time consuming when selling vintage. I have almost 700 listings in my shop and I take new photos every time I list a new item so the photo actually shows what the buyer is getting. And video on top of that. I’ll have to raise my prices again.
@KaraBuntinTutorials
Ай бұрын
While you're taking pictures, do a quick video of the item that lasts 6 seconds. It doesn't have to be edited at all, it just has to exist. I do a quick video on my phone while I'm cutting things out, then I upload them that way, no editing and it takes about one minute overall.
@tinaindina7032

I’m trying to use less time on listing. Optimizing. So the question is if having a video makes the listing that more attractive to a buyer and/or rank higher🤷♀️ to make it worth it.
@KaraBuntinTutorials
Ай бұрын
It's a piece of the puzzle. How big apiece, who knows, but I do know that there have been a lot of ecommerce tests that show video helps sell a product a lot faster.
That bit about "looking at customer engagement" sounds a LOT like the algorithms used on KZread, et. al. that steer people toward what the algorithm thinks it should show them, rather than what they asked to see. :-( The entire set of changes sounds like an overall approach along the lines of, "we're going to steer customers toward what makes Etsy more money, behave yourselves."
@KaraBuntinTutorials
Ай бұрын
It’s a basic engagement algorithm, most platforms are using them now. Nothing earth shattering…
When searching for vintage items I would really like it if Etsy made it obvious to get those results. I know there is a filter but you kind of have to know it’s there. So doing a search for example for “vintage botanical book” people could actually get shown just that, and not digital downloads of book pages, or something made to look vintage or in “vintage style” (hate that term when used in new items. Vintage style IS vintage = has some years behind it ((40+ in my view) well….

We'll see how it shakes out...It sounds like some kind of category division might be in the works.
JS has a silver tongue. After all, he is the CEO. The latest fuss with Etsy, reports highlighting their weaknesses, ignorant and uninformed seller service, reign of AI, unsatisfactory results, angry and devastated sellers. He would be foolish not to try to save his company's image. For now I think he's a fairy tale writer, I'll start to believe it when I see actual changes and a greater focus on sellers.
@KaraBuntinTutorials
Ай бұрын
Tell me how you really feel hahaha!
They wouldn't know an accurate shipping price if it hit them on the head. They always expect sellers to take a hit on shipping. They also need to fix their shipping estimates and quit including the day the order is placed as one of your production days. That should not start until the next business day following the order. On a positive note, I like the categories idea.
@KaraBuntinTutorials
Ай бұрын
I use the calculated shipping so it’s always right and they can’t argue about it!
@cjbrockusrapp9438
Ай бұрын
Did they always have the handling charge option in calculated shipping? I don't remember it being there in 2010. That's why I set everything up with flat rate shipping when we started, to adjust for packing materials and time. Anyway, may switch over to calculated since I see an option now @@KaraBuntinTutorials
@KaraBuntinTutorials
Ай бұрын
I've never used a handling fee, that does increase the shipping so they'll probably say that you're charging too much because of that
As a consumer, I'm not sure I need categories when I am searching for a handmade gift on Etsy. I am usually looking for cool gift ideas and I don't care if they are POD or knitted with an Amish loom. But for the old school handmade sellers out there, categories might keep them from saying "that's not fair" for a little while! Finally, a way to separate the handmade goods and digital goods from my really, really handmade goods! 😂
@KaraBuntinTutorials
Ай бұрын
Considering that there are a lot of people complaining that they order something they think is handmade that comes with a “made in China” sticker on it, i think that people do care.
@richm34
Ай бұрын
@@KaraBuntinTutorials yeah that is the part that baffles me. You would think that attrition would take care of sellers that mislead, especially if buyers care so much about handmade with TLC.
@KaraBuntinTutorials
Ай бұрын
Not every buyer does care about it, but the ones that do, do care. The problem is that when Etsy says "handmade" and uses that as the value proposition for the entire site, people get mad when they receive something that isn't handmade. The grey line of POD is another part of that. We can debate all day about the "handmadeness" of POD products, but a lot of people expect everything on Etsy to be made by a person's hands, not designed by them then sent to a manufacturer. When Etsy opened the site up to POD they chose to try to navigate that grey line, and part of the problem is that they haven't done a good job of that. They're basically reaping what they've sown as far as not being strict about the definition of handmade.
