Hi there Mercedes owners. Today in your 2017, Mercedes GLE 350, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install. Curt's class three, two inch trailer hitch receiver. And this is what our hitch looks like when it's installed. For the most part, it's going to be hidden behind the bumper. So you can't see any of the cross tube.
You're just going to see the receiver here at the back, and it's tucked up pretty nicely to where unless you're looking right down on it, you're really not going to notice it. It's a class three, two inch by two inch receiver. So it's going to be great for all of your towing needs, whether you're wanting to hook up a bike rack in it like a four bike platform rack and bring some bikes to the trail, or if maybe you've got a pop-up camper, you wanted to bring with you to the campsite, you should be able to do that as well. This hitch uses a five-eighths inch hitch pin and clip. Now one doesn't come included with the hitch, but you can get plenty here at etrailer.com and we also have locking options. So you can protect your investments on your accessories.
On bottom, we have hoop style, safety chain loops with a very large opening that should accommodate just about every shape, size, and style of safety chain. Little ones are no problems. And you can see here these big guys don't have a problem, either. This hitch offers a 750 pound tongue weight, which is the force going down on top of our receiver. That's going to be more than enough for a four bike platform rack fully loaded up, or the largest cargo carrier that we have here at etrailer loaded up to its maximum capacity.
It also offers a 7,500 pound gross towing capacity, which is how much that it can pull behind it.So if you've got to set a jet skis or maybe a boat or a camper, you should be able to bring that with this as well. Now, as always, I recommend you verify in your vehicle's owner's manual and ensure you don't exceed any of its towing capacities. Now I've got some measurements for you to help you when deciding on accessories. From the ground to the top inside edge of our receiver tube, it's going to measure 15 inches. And this is important when determining, if you need a drop arise or a raised shank on your accessories and from the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the rear bumper, it's going to measure about six inches.
And this is important when determining if any of your folding accessories can be placed in the upright storage position without contacting the bumper. Now that we've gone over some of the features of this hitch, why don't you follow along with me and we'll show you how to get it installed.I do recommend having an extra set of hands when getting this one installed because there's a couple of tricky spots. We'll begin our installation at the back of the vehicle with our lift gate open, we can then open up our tray to our rear compartment. We're just going to set this aside and then there's a single bolt, we're going to remove just on the underside right back here. This is just to the inside of where the striker is at the center. We're going to use a T30 Torx socket to remove the bolt. And once we've got that removed from there, the panel will just pull up. There are clips underneath, so I like to start on one side, get this side popped up, then I'll check the other side and make sure it gets popped up and then we can set this piece aside as well. And now the corners underneath that panel, if we just peel this back, this is just like a fabric, will expose the nut behind that we we're trying to get to. We're going to remove this nut on each side. We're using a 16 millimeter wrench. You could also use a socket, just a little tight, so the wrench seemed easy to get in there and is ratcheting. That makes it a little bit easier as well. And now that we got that nut removed from this stud, if we go underneath this panel here, you'll see that there's another stud here with another nut on it. We're going to remove that one as well with the same size wrench. You're going to remove the nuts on the other side here as well, which you'll find that the one that's further underneath the panel here is a little bit more difficult to access. So this compartment right here has two little black caps on it. And if you just turn them, counter-clockwise, go on thread just like nuts. So we'll get both of those pulled off of there. And then this guy can then be pulled up and that'll actually make it a lot easier to access the nut there, on the driver's side here. We're now going to be underneath the vehicle, here at the back.I'm going to go ahead and put a strap in p
