Hi there Cherokee owners, today on our 2019 Jeep Cherokee we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install Curt's four pole flat trailer connector vehicle wiring harness. This four pole wiring harness is going to provide you with all the necessary lighting signals to keep you DOT compliant in all States, this includes your left turn signal, right turn signal, tail lamps, and brake lamps. One of the things that I really like about this harness is the included module. The module will intercept all of the lighting signals from your factory wiring, and then the module produces the signals that go to our four pole flat trailer connector. What's nice about this is if there's any faults on your trailer wiring the module can shut down that circuit to prevent any damage from occurring. In the event the modules unable to shut the circuit down in time, our module has its own dedicated fuse. The fuse will open and prevent any damage from occurring on our vehicle's wiring. We simply need to just repair our trailer and then replace the fuse. And you're probably wondering, do I even need wiring on my Cherokee That just depends on what you're going to be using it for.
If you're just going to be putting a bike rack on the back with a couple of bikes you probably don't need it, but if you're going to have a cargo carrier on the back fully loaded up, where it's going to obstruct your tail lights, there are lighting kits available for your cargo carrier to ensure that everybody behind you sees your signals so they know your intentions when going down the road. Additionally, if you're going to be hauling a trailer behind you, you have to have trailer wiring to operate the lights on the back of your trailer. On the end of our four pole harness here we have a dust cap. The dust cap will keep out any dirt, debris, and moisture, ensuring the long lasting connection on our four pole connector. Additionally, you can feed your dust cap through your safety chain loops on your hitch when you're not using it. This'll hold it up out of the way, ensuring it doesn't get damaged. It's a pretty straightforward and simple installation.
There's no cutting or splicing required to any of your vehicles wiring. It simply plugs in line on both your driver and passenger side tail lights, and then you run a power and ground wire up to your battery. Now that we've gone over some of the features, let's go over the installation together so you can have the confidence to do it at home. We'll begin our installation at the back of the vehicle by removing both the driver and passenger side taillight assemblies. We'll use a T30 torque socket to remove both the bolts holding the taillight assembly in. We can then pull our taillight assembly outward and towards the rear to get it released, and we'll disconnect the electrical connector located on the back.
There's a red locking tab that you first have to pry out, and you can press in on the release tab and disconnect it. We're going to set this aside and remove the other side in the exact same way. We'll now need to fish wire our wiring from the bottom of our fender here up behind our taillight assembly. To help us do that we're going to be using a fish wire. We're using airline tube as our fish wire, but anything will work that is flexible but rigid enough to allow you to feed it down.
A coat hanger works really well. Then we can reach up underneath and grab our fish wire. We can now use some electrical tape to tape our wiring to the fish wire to help us pull it back up.We're going to be fishing up the connectors that have the brown, yellow and red wires going to them. This is going up on our driver's side. Once you've got your wiring pulled up we can remove our fish wire, and then we'll take the male plugs and plug it into our factory female connector there, and that'll hold it up in place. The other side of our connector is going to go back into our taillight assembly. We're not going to do that until a later step. We'll be routing our wiring over towards the other side to fish wire it up, so it's a good idea to just go ahead and fish wire that wire down now, so that way when you're underneath routing that wiring it's already there and you can tape it to it and pull it on up. You want to make sure you avoid your exhaust because you don't want to melt any of your wiring. I recommend that you zip tie your wiring to the factory wiring that's going across to keep it up out of the way. I'm going to route that now, and then I'll show you the path that I took to get it over there so you can see how I got it zip tied up.The wire is routed across

My Curt wiring kit, you don't have to do all that wire fishing, or run it under the car. The one I got did everything inside of the car and through the original wire harness rubber in the tail lights, and the one for the battery goes along under the plastic trim to a rubber hole in the firewall.

Won't wiring it directly to the positive terminal always have a drain on the battery even when ignition is off?

It will not draw power from the battery when the vehicle is off. www.etrailer.com/Custom-Fit-Vehicle-Wiring/Curt/C56406.html
