Hey everybody, Ryan here at etrailer. Today on our 2022 Toyota RAV4, we're gonna be showing you how to install the etrailer.com trailer hitch receiver. But before we do that, why don't we check it out and make sure that this is the right hitch for you When it comes to the Toyota RAV4, I see people out there doing a ton of different things with them, whether it's pulling a trailer around, using accessories, whether it be a bike rack or cargo carrier. If it we're me and I was looking for a hitch for my RAV4, I would want something that would be able to handle all those different types of things and with the setup like this one here it's gotta do just that. And something else that would come to my mind is how it's gonna look on the back of the RAV4. 'Cause these have come a long way.
They're actually pretty sporty looking vehicles now. And I wouldn't want to put a hitch back here that would take away from that appearance. And with this particular one being completely hidden, for the most part, I really don't think it looks bad at all. Puts off a factory type option, at least in my opinion. I do wanna address one of the big questions we get asked all the time in regards to putting a hitch on RAV4.
And that is is your hands free lift gate assist feature still gonna work And the answer is yes. You are just gonna have to kick your foot to either side of the hitch. And I got it to open up on the second kick. Sometimes it takes a little practice to find that sweet spot, but once you do, everything will open up like it should. Since this is a class three hitch, it's gonna have that two inch by two inch receiver tube opening.
And that is a super common size, so a ton of different things will work with it. At the end of the receiver two, there's a reinforced collar for a little bit of extra support. And it is going to use that standard five inch pen and clip. Keep in mind, though, a pen and clip does not come included with the hitch. If you need one, not really a big deal.
Just grab it here at etrailer. And it is going to have loop style safety chain openings. And these are gonna give us more than enough space to use just about any size hook that our trailer might have. As far as the hitch's weight capacity go it's gonna have some pretty high numbers. Maximum gross tongue weight rating is going to be 600 pounds and that's gonna be the amount of weight that is pushing down on the hitch. So that's a high enough number to be able to use just about any size bike rack or cargo carrier that you'd want to, for example. As far as the hitch's maximum gross trailer weight rating goes, that's gonna be 4000 pounds. That's gonna be the amount of weight pulling on the hitch. So weight of your trailer plus anything that you might have on it. This hitch can be used with a weight distribution system, which is a separate component and what happens whenever you use that is it's going to keep your trailer and your RAV4 level whenever you're going down the road. So if you happen to have a big camper, something along them lines, might be worth checking into. With that said, though, even with that weight distribution system the capacities will remain the same at 600 and 4000. With that in mind, though, I do always like to recommend, it's never a bad idea just to grab your RAV4's owner's manual. That way you can make sure your Toyota can pull that much weight safely. And with all that said, if you do plan on pulling a trailer around, you're gonna want the lights to work on it. That way people around you know what's going on and you'll be safe and legal. And to accomplish that you can always grab some trailer wire. Let's go ahead and just grab a couple of measurements now. And these will help us figure out what hitch mounted accessories will work best. You go from the ground to the top inside edge of the receiver tube opening. That's gonna be right at 12 inches. So if you're gonna hook up a trailer, chances are really good you're gonna need to get a ball mount that has a rise in the shank. For most people, probably about a four inch rise would do the trick. You go from the center of the hitch pin hold to the edge of the rear bumper. That's gonna be about six inches. And you can use that measurement to help figure out that if any folding type accessories you might have can be stored in that upright position without hitting the back of your RAV4. Just to do a quick comparison with this hitch compared to some of the others available, they're all gonna be relatively the same, especially in terms of the appearance. For the most part, they're all gonna be completely hidden. And really the big difference is just gonn
