TOYOTA RAV4 TRAILER HITCH INSTALLATION

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Hey everyone! In today's video I install a trailer hitch on my 2018 Toyota Rav4 LE. I go through some of the steps that it takes to install one and then show you what it looks like once the wiring is all done. It should be very helpful when I want to tow something. If you enjoy the video please don't forget to like, share, and subscribe for future content.

Thank you! Your video helped me install mine. Better than U-Haul video. You show more. And you show regular tools. 🙂

According to the poorly made curt trailer Instructions you should re install the plastic panel after a slight trim. Thanks for great video.

If you plan to do this make sure you buy a tap so you can clean the threads out before you install the bolts. I torqued my bolts to 65 Ft Lbs.

I did this install a few weeks ago. No need to remove the muffler tailpipe rubber grommet. Just have your buddy pull town on the pipe and slide the unit in and around it...also the wiring is a very easy DIY.. I modified the power lead and connected a power plug ( cigarette lighter plug) instead of running it to the battery... Now the intire wiring setup stores in the wheel well when not in use...when in use just plug the harness into the back seat power outlet.. this setup cuts down the install time dramatically..

So, I just installed a hitch on my 2018 rav 4 and I put the hitch on my hand truck I bought from big box. It was the perfect height to hold in place while I threaded the bolts. I used a clamp and made the angle adjustment to get under the bumper then tighten to align the holes

Here's a tip for you. If you're agile enough, leave the vehicle on the ground. If you have, or can borrow a floor jack it makes installation real simple. Center the hitch on the jack and position it so that it's close to position. You'll need to have the end near the muffler back a bit. Using the jack to hold the hitch up makes it fairly easy to "fudge" the one side in without having to pull the muffler hanger (rubber) off the bracket. Once you've done that, move the jack and raise it if you need to to get the rear (main cross beam) near the proper height and then lift the brackets up to start the bolts in. Now tighten the bolts. Doing it with a jacke makes it less likely that you're going to drop the hitch on you.

Dude you better go back and torque those bolts. If all you did was hand tighten then they will eventually loosen when towing.

Would like to see where they made the wire connection. My 1993 corolla wire harness was spliced in at the rear panel next to the brake light harness.

The OEM connects straight to the battery cable for power and the directional lights connect as a T fitting to the original connectors.

I've installed these on two Ravs now and been towing for 6 years now, you're going to need to trash that ball mount! Even the smallest trailer I have needs a rise higher than that thing....I have a 5x8 utility trailer and a Flagstaff 206 LTD I pull.

  • @SchwayZ

Agreed. I've actually flipped the hitch and flipped the ball and now it pulls my trailer without scraping. Otherwise it's way too low to the ground.

So what setup should I do ? You said you had to spin your hitch upside down ?? And what ball mount are you running now ? What’s your setup now because I’m trying to find a good set

  • @SchwayZ

    @SchwayZ

    3 жыл бұрын

Yes I had to flip the hitch upside down because it was scraping the ground when i was driving over/into dips. As for the ball mount, it depends on what size of trailer you are towing. I've got a few different sizes because each trailer is unique. Average size is 2 inches but you can get a hitch that has multiple sizes.

SchwayZ_ so the hitch that’s under the rav by curt rubbed the ground so you flipped it upside down ?? Wasn’t it looking weird afterwards do you have a picture of your setup because I’m about to order a hitch by curt from Etrailer and I don’t want to get something that’s not gonna work

  • @SchwayZ

@@mxl1k556 so I didn't flip the entire hitch I just flipped the ball part of it. I installed the hitch unit as per the instructions but the ball part was flipped upside down since mine would curve down. After I flipped it, it now curves upwards. I can send a picture if you want to reach out to me on Instagram.

You don't need to use a torque wrench. Not much of a disadvantage if you just hand tighten it. I just hand tigthened it with a socket wrench

Neomaya Davila yes you need to use a torque wrench per guidance from Toyota’s towing guidelines. Any type of UHaul garage will tell you this as well. If they aren’t torqued those bolts will eventually loosen when you have a load on the vehicle.
