The Amhara people are facing multiple existential threats from the federal government and neighboring regions. Particularly, in some parts of the Oromia region, they have been subject to massacres, especially after Abiy came to power. Additionally, there are territorial disputes with the Tigray region. Ethiopian politics is primarily based on ethnic identity, and the Amhara people supported Abiy, who claims Oromo ethnicity, during his rise to power. They also fought alongside the Ethiopian and Eritrean governments against the Tigray region during the two year long conflict. Following the Pretoria deal, the Ethiopian government decided to provide disputed territory to Tigray. And in long run the ethiopia goverment wants to weaken the region to make sure no future challenges for its power after crushing the challenges from tigrai by force. In response, the local militia called Fano is actively fighting to defend the Amhara people and has significant support from the local population. The general sentiment among the Amhara people is that they feel betrayed by Abiy's actions and wish to overthrow the government in collaboration with other Ethiopian regions in the long run.

To be factual, the Amhara is not the largest group...just because the language was imposed on all the ethnic groups and is understood by all, it doesn't mean the population of the ethnic Amharas is big. The largest group by ethnic makeup is actually Oromo. Even though Abi Ahmed is half Oromo and half Amhara..as is almost half of Ethiopia, we have seen that Oromos consider their loyalties to their Oromo sides more than the Amhara and even though his wife is also Amhara...his children are considered Oromo. Semitic Habasha (Tigray, Amhara) used to be both maternal and paternal..but is now strictly paternal.

I think judging the actions by the Amhara people as resulting from betrayal of being an Allie in the Tigray war is not correct.
