Ethan Leinwand - Skippy Whippy (The Mississippi Jook Band)
Музыка
In the summer of 1936 - in Hattiesburg, MS - a super-group of sorts recorded under the name The Mississippi Jook Band. Featuring Blind Roosevelt Graves on guitar and Cooney Vaughn on piano, their 4 issued sides are serious dynamos! These are the only known recordings of pianist Cooney Vaughn, and are ferocious enough to validate his reputation as the best barrelhouse pianist in Mississippi.
In this version (faster than the original) I try to capture the rollicking feel of the whole band, and channel the shredding power of Mr. Cooney Vaughn.

Thanks Ed! It's actually just a mighty 1,300 subscribers...not too shabby for obscure piano blues!
Wow, again! Rollicking is right, Ethan. Keep right on re-birthing that jook style you do so well. We need more of it.

Thanks for engaging with all this music! Really means a lot to me, and inspires me to make more videos.
Great work Ethan! As always
Can you please play the Yancey Special?! Jimmy was so smooth and that killer left hand was to me, the beginning of it all (boogie woogie/ blues.)
If only ol Roosevelt could see this

If he could see this, I'd make him play Hittin' the Bottle Stomp with me 😀
The recording session was in Hattiesburg, MS.

@@EthanLeinwand You're welcome. I love your work especially the way you bring us versions of old masterpieces on a quality piano and with quality modern recording techniques, to say nothing of the high-quality playing that captures the spirit of the original.
Absolutely brilliant playing!

Great arrangement and piano playing! You do sound like Cooney Vaughn! Do you perchance play "Hittin' the Bottle Stomp" as well?

Yes! And here's a video : kzread.info/dash/bejne/hWxsmsWsc5PIXbw.html Usually this trio is with drums and string bass, but my bassist had broken his wrist so he switched to left-handed tuba for this concert.

@@EthanLeinwand That's an amazing perfomance! Thanks for the link!
Did I hear some Piano Kid Edwards in there? 🤔

There's definitely some Will Ezell "Pitchin' Boogie" thrown in. No Piano Kid Edwards, at least not intentionally.
