Ethan Hawke, Sally Hawkins And Aisling Walsh Speak On Their Film "Maudie"

Ойын-сауық

Maud, bright-eyed but hunched with crippled hands, yearns to be independent, to live away from her protective family and she also yearns, passionately, to create art. When she answers an ad for a housekeeper for the reclusive Everett, a local fish peddler, the two strike up an unlikely romance. Maud’s determination for her art, along with her partnership with Everett, blossoms into a career as a famous folk artist, bringing them closer together in ways they never imagined. Ethan Hawke, Sally Hawkins and Aisling Walsh pass by the BUILD studio to speak on their film, "Maudie."

Sally Hawkins is outstanding ... my God, the depth and realness in the scenes between Ethan and Sally was like an injection into my heart, just so real and so deep. Movies like this are utterly priceless when it stirs up so much within and makes us reflect on how we too can be better with our own trials and tribulations. Probably one of the best movies based on a real existing lady and her husband

The most lovely girl I met in gradeschool had the same disabilities and seemed very lonely like Maudie, and she was a foster child so she came to our school but then just disappeared. On Valentine's Day when everyone was passing around Valentines, she came to me with a hand-drawn valentine, and nervously explained she couldn't buy any from the store. I was so happy to receive it and told her it was beautiful. She was looking for validation about it and I felt so sorry she had to feel bad in thinking some people would tease her about that or make her feel less worthy. She was intelligent, kind, sweet and when I watched Maudie all I could think of was that girl and wonder where she is today and if she found happiness like Maudie did. I wonder if she finally got the chance to create a world and family all her own. I hope so.

Thank you for sharing yr story. I hope she did. You say happiness like Maud, but did she. She found a roof over her head. I question if Everett could give love. But perhaps after some years he was less mean to her. But definatly towards the end of her life i wld imagin he loved her. I was left yearing that all ppl in her life didn't give her the regard that she deserved. I feel for her, the cold with arthritis. She small space. I think she was a special lady. I have watched the movie so many times. I cry each time. The acting. The music, i love the movie. He was murded.

This is not in the movie. I only found it out going on Wikipedia. How terribly sad and what tough lives they had. I think Everett Lewis grew up in an orphanage, couldn't read or write, Maud's baby was sold, she was crippled with arthritis from a young age...and then just the hardships of just day-to-day life. Anyway, I loved this movie! So did my Mom, who's almost 90.

I had seen this film once or twice before, so when it came up on t.v. today, I thought it might be too sad to enjoy. But I started watching and didn't miss a minute of it. It has depth and truth in it. I cried a fair bit. I am fortunate to be able to cry in movies because I almost never do otherwise. It's healing. All three of these interviewees combined on a real cinematic art work! I also am a painter, a 'nobody'. It is the refuge, peace and joy, that Maud finds with her colours and brushes that keeps me coming back to this movie. Her paintings are often very simple, but some of her compositional arrangements are stunningly exquisite.

Sally Hawkins and Ethan Hawke were both absolutely amazing and the director was positively brilliant. Now for this interview ... Such a touching, well acted, filmed piece of art. i have been thinking about the film for several days. i can still hear Maudie's voice in my imagination. THAT is the mark of a truly great film......one that you can think about days later. And what such beautiful art! It makes me think how each of us are so individual and must express ourselves the way we are and not necessarily what others may want us to be. What fun, to think of the many facets the film had to offer.(And we all LOVE Ethan and Sally!)

Vastly under-rated and EXHIBITED film. I was fortunate enough to see it, though, and it was brilliantly done. I remember hearing about Maude Lewis when I was a child. (I must have seen the 1965 CBC piece on her.) I did NOT know the story about Maudie having a child was TRUE. I thought that was just part of the "artistic license" of many biographic films, but it is true. Maude Lewis's Wikipedia page does not even make mention of a child, so to know that it was true and how Maudie suffered so much emotionally and physically, and yet made these wonderful and happy pieces of art, was just astonishing to me. Some people say that Maudie's work was too simplistic, but if you look at them, so delightfully done with such great colour, SHE DID NOT MISS A THING. Thank you to all of you who endeavoured for 10 YEARS to get this film to the screen. It was excellent and that type of excellence is MISSING from many of the films being made today. Well done and THANK YOU!!!

This movie made me feel that way and took me back to the golden days of a different precious and unique life style. I dont have the enough proper words to express how much I value this film. You have to know whats going on without someone explaining it to you. It is not for younger people.. they wont understand the true value of it and thats one of the reasons I cherish this work of art. This movie is so so sooooo amazing that I had to look it up in KZread after I had watched it on Netflix. And thanks, I didn't know that the piece of paper at the end was the note that she got hired with. Thanks.

I just watched this and was moved to tears by it's authenticity, simplicity and sincerity. It boggles my mind that a movie of this truly exceptional standard falls under the radar and absolute garbage like The Whale is treated like a landmark in cinema.

Moved to tears, led me down a rabbit hole to learn more about her and to see more of her work. The black fuzzy fat cats with yellow eyes, ox, deer, and landscapes. I love the way she painted her kindness into her canvas. The film showed that her painting was an escape from the ugliness of certain realities and the comprises we make in order to survive our surroundings and circumstances.

Minus the intreviewer whos shallow and just using intelligent sounding language to camouflage. He didn't get the movie he cant see past bleakness to him "patriarchal " is evil. Hes looking down at life people had. Life isnt black and white its many things and people learn to work around it and be happy.

If the movie, actors, directors, etc., are not at least nominated, those who have seen the movie, will be severely disappointed. I know I will most certainly be. I wonder if Maudie ever met her daughter or if her daughter ever realized who her mother was.

Actually Catherine Dowley knew who's her mother before Maud died. She even tried send letter to ask for visit, but Maud begged Catherine to not come see her. Maybe because she was already near death in the hospital.

I just watched the movie Jan 2024 and the relationship felt very real. It reminded me of the soft power my grandmother had. She used to say, "the way to find a man is to let him chase you until you catch him." She never understood the feminist movement because she loved my Grandfather and they worked as a team, just like Everett and Maud. She knew how to get her way without any arguments. She did the cooking and cleaning, he went to work tended the garden and did the decorating. (Men's jobs) But when he retired and she became ill, he did everything. He had never cooked in 50-60 years, then he did it all a d he was a really good baker! I think the greatest tragedy wasn’t depicted or mentioned in the titles of the movie, which was, 7 years after Maud's death, Everett was murdered by a burglar or burglars. Possibly her fame drew attention to the tiny home and in the film Everett says he didn’t ask for the attention.
