ABOUT THE TEN PERCENT HAPPIER PODCAST
Dan Harris is a fidgety, skeptical journalist who had a panic attack on live national television, which led him to try something he otherwise never would have considered: meditation. He went on to write the bestselling book, 10% Happier. On this show, Dan talks with eminent meditation teachers, top scientists, and even the odd celebrity. Guests include everyone from His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Brené Brown to Karamo from Queer Eye. On some episodes, Dan ventures into the deep end of the pool, covering subjects such as enlightenment and psychedelics. On other episodes, it’s science-based techniques for issues such as anxiety, productivity, and relationships. Dan's approach is seemingly modest, but secretly radical: happiness is a skill you can train, just like working your bicep in the gym. Your progress may be incremental at first, but like any good investment, it compounds over time.

I loved this whole interview, and Esther's point about how internalizing each other helps us not to feel alone in the world. Reminded me of the Rumi quote: Lovers don't suddenly find each other, they were in each other all along.

regarding 911. I was a deep tissue massage therapist then. Generally the discomfort voiced by my clients was 50% shoulders 50% low back prior to then, Afterwards, for a long time the %'s changed to much higher in shoulders. I contributed to that 911 effected their heart/emotions. That they were so overwhelmed and powerless.

16:45 for years I struggled with this. I felt like my social life could be represented as a nice car with a dead battery, I had all the right pieces and relatively successful except no energy/zero motion and all I needed was a jump start from one other person to get the ball rolling. I basically did what she said, as soon as I was able to connect with one true friend it was like the flood gates opened up and suddenly I was making connections everywhere. I am an introverted person also but being honest about that to myself I felt that I wasn't pretending to be an extrovert and I was able to connect with people more intimately than just acquaintances. Even as friends come and go I am now way more confident in my ability to make new friends and make new connections.

I'm a big fan of Esther Perel and have taken in a lot of content, both her being interviewed and her own content and I really got a lot out of this one. It felt like she was being a bit more vulnerable and that the two of you were in partnership to surface the takeaways. This is the first time I've encountered this podcast, and have now subscribed. Great work by both of you.

Good interview Dan! One note - yoga CLASSES involve other people, but yoga PRACTICE can be done at home. And just like with meditation, even if you practice in a group, having a regular home practice is also important.

@motolenovo3914 Agree! And it seems a little ironic (imo) that in light of the fact that it is so well known how much we need to see the faces, body language, and interactions of those speaking in these podcasts - and yet...how many interviews of this sort are strictly audio, devoid of video images😢 ...and the 'lenovo' part of your handle came in handy for me😅...because it reminded me of the type of computer I was trying to think of in a dream I had last night. In my dream, someone said I think this data came from from an iPad. I wanted to correct them with the fact that I knew it was sent from a Lenovo😅 But, since I c/n recall the name Lenovo, instead I just said it was from a PC😊

I would like to point out that although the world (our little worlds- if you will - are/is 'safer' today than in the past....) We dont perceive it that way at all. In our 'yesterdays' (perhaps as kids growing up) our news media was not necessarily global, as it is today, OR as focused on attention grabbing headlines, i.e., the BAD [sometimes horrifying] news we are exposed to today. And, especially with SM platforms as it is today, and which we did not have in those days, because, well...social media did not exist back then. So we also were not getting all the horrible and attacking sort of data input we are exposed to today. Horrible interactions went on in our yesterdays - growing up - but we were basically unaware of it. So... while the 'world' may have been a much more unsafe place 'yesterday' than in today's world, WE DID NOT KNOW THAT(!) at the time. We perceive the world as vastly more dangerous today than in the past because we are now PRIVY to all the horrible actions happening globally and even locally now, more than ever. JMO.

Sometimes it irritates me: this might all be true, and we know most of this already. But apply all this in reality, in the heat of the moment is REALLY different. This is just too easy theory. We can all analyse and tell this, talk about the theory and "what we should do".. The practice and reality, that's what matters. I don't know of she contributes to that al lot.
