Look at the way the UFC is taking off. It's a fairly new sport and now guys are starting to earn some serious money, EA Sports are choosing to do a UFC game every time over a boxing one, Mayweather wants to fight Conor because no-one really cares about anyone in boxing as much and Conor would make him more money than anyone in his own sport. The UFC has taken over and that McGregor and Diaz rematch at the weekend was the final nail in the coffin.

Boxing is doing just fine and will always be around, you just don't follow the sport so you're ignorant. MMA or rather the UFC monopoly is hanging on shaky foundations. Just look how low their PPVs have been the last few yrs aside from Mcgregor or Rousey, the sport's popularity peaked in 09/10. Several of their major international markets have completely dried up. Btw the EA UFC games are complete shit. The EA boxing fight night series are masterpieces, and the next one is being released next yr.

Cory Hill I do follow Boxing and have all the boxing games, last one was Fight Night Champion on the old gen consoles. MMA is far more exciting, the top guys aren't allowed to run from the other top guys. There are more PPV draws than just Conor and Ronda, they are just the most popular like how Boxing has its most popular PPV draws too. I'm far from "ignorant", I follow both sports and have followed Boxing for longer but MMA gets me far more excited than Boxing ever has.

The Notorious Well ok then that's your opinion but you aren't entitled to the facts. The only major draws the UFC has currently are Conor and Ronda. UFC PPV sales peaked in 09/10 and have slowly diminished since then, I can post the numbers if you want to see them. Before UFC 202 their biggest PPV show was UFC 100, 7 years ago. Their international coverage is a mere fraction now compared to what it used to be. Sportnet which is the major sports broadcast provider in Canada stopped covering UFC. MMA is dead in Japan. It's also dead in the UK. Golovkin vs Brook just did a 50,000 seat arena. Canelo Alvarez just did 1.3 mil PPV buys fighting a nobody, UFC could barely do that even if they stacked their card with 3 title fights. As far as the games go, it isn't even close. The fight night series is a masterpiece. Many ppl still play FNC online even though it been out for yrs. EA is making another fight night in 2017. EA UFC games are crap and full of glitches and programming errors. The old EA MMA game is better than any UFC game that came out.

I'm a BJJ Brown Belt so obviously I'd prefer a submission over a knockout. The reason I love a submission over a knockout is because until that very moment when someone gets knocked out they're still in the fight, they have no control over themselves being knocked out, but they were still in the fight until they got knocked out. Now when you submit someone, unlike a knockout they have control over their decisions and when they tap out, theyre mentally saying I give up. You win. I am defenceless. I do not want to go on. Thats why I love a good submission.

Joe Rogan was playing chess, those boxing guys are playing checkers. UFC runs more PPVs with deeper cards and more exciting fights. Boxing may not die, but after Mayweather/Pacquiauo there's only GGG or Canelo left. Boxing NEEDS superstars to even hold a PPV event. The UFC doesn't. And the UFC still has a healthy, consistent PPV business model. Boxing is in desperate need of a stage 1, system reboot of everything. From simplifying weight classes to single champions in those divisions. Boxing is still the wild west, it took 5 years to make Mayweather/Pacquiauo happen. That wouldn't happen in the UFC. Boxing is dying, while the UFC keeps adding fight cards and expanding internationally.

2:49 pretty much sums up this argument for me. " [MMA] is the sport of fighting. What boxing is is the sport of punching." --Well said Joe. That's pretty much the answer to this age-old argument. And I'm the same way. I love rally all arts of bodily combat and love boxing and watching Tyson and Holyfield and Lennox Lewis fights from the 90s, but it just doesn't compare to the freedom of giving someone a swift roundhouse kick to the face or watching someone pull it off.

Yes, I listened to the actual conversation and most of what he said is not based in fact, it is a matter of opinion, when he says that MMA is "much more exciting than other combat sports" that is an opinion. When Joe Rogan mentions MMA is the "sport of fighting" I don't know how many real fights have you have been in but MMA is not real fighting its not even close. Then he says boxing will go away and get swallowed by MMA, He is trying to win an argument that's all. Where are the numbers and data to support half the things he says in the video? Then he is actually trying to argue that sport jujitsu is a more visually appealing sport then boxing.

Welp, here we are, a full decade later, and a fight between Anthony Joshua & Wladimir Klitschko for professional boxing's World Heavyweight Championship just took place at Wembley Stadium... with roughly 90,000 fans in attendance, and a record breaking pay-per-view audience from around the world. Not to mention those who followed along on social media, or the likely-staggering amount who pirated the event, thanks to am untold number of shady live stream. Yeah, it sounds like the sport of boxing is probably on the verge of death. No, no, you're totally right, Joe Rogan was a regular Nostradamus on SportsCenter that time. 😐 And look, I'm not even a huge boxing fan. I like it, and I do keep up with it pretty regularly online, but I haven't actually ordered a live boxing event since the time Mike Tyson literally chewed up Evander Holyfield. That's been damn near 20 years ago, when was in the friggin' eighth grade. On the other hand, I love MMA. Love it. I've been a fan since I watched my very first show, a rented (you 'member Movie Gallery?) VHS (you 'member video cassettes?!) copy of UFC 3, while it was still a new release. I love it. MMA is deeper, faster paced, more aggressive, and less political than pro boxing. And you're almost guaranteed at least a couple of big finishes on every card. It's just more entertaining, to me personally, than boxing. But boxing isn't going anywhere any time soon. Maybe never, unless society finally does get pussified enough to ban all sports which carry a strong risk of concussion-related health issues. I doubt that will actually happen... err, I certainly hope it doesn't happen, anyway. Still, if it does, then we'll be kissing MMA, American football, and a ton of other popular sports goodbye right along with boxing. Aside from some kind of safety-first ban, boxing will never go away. No matter how popular MMA becomes. The question isn't which sport is better (that's completely subjective), nor is it which sport will survive. The real question is why in the hell some of these stubborn "die hard" fans continuously refuse to accept the fact that mixed martial arts and boxing aren't mutually exclusive. The sports can, have, do, and will continue to exist (and oftentimes thrive) parallel to one another. The entire, base argument is stupid. It's like asking which is better, NASCAR or Formula One Racing, Pro Wrestling or Sports Entertainment, PGA Golf or the Extreme Frisbee League... just kidding, everyone knows those last two aren't real. It's all just two sides of the same damn coin, that's all. So, yeah, I'm pretty sure we should all just agree to let my oddly long comment section essay here serve as an official, final answer to this ridiculous goddamn debate. Now, turn on something you enjoy watching... and shut the fuck up about what the guy next door has on his television. Mootch-oats grosh-us, there, uh-meegoze.

@Mike E, they're combat sports & everything in boxing is legal in mma so of course they'll be compared. Its just horribly ineffective when elbows, knees, kicks, leg sweeps & trapping strikes are allowed. Boxing striking just falls apart as soon as one of those is employed. One grab of the arm & elbow to the skull or feint punch to the grill followed by a rib shattering kick & it's over for the boxer.

UFC managers book arenas in good time, but if Showtime or HBO is planning an boxing event... Then UFC will have to wait on a confirmation from these TV stations. Madison Sqare Garden & MGM Grand have better connections to boxing

Its only a matter of time. Boxing cant keep going as strong when theres only 1 or 2 superstars. Especially when the best avoid the best. Who actually wanted to see khan vs canelo? Not me i knew canelo was too big. Ggg is like 36/37 and is already on the later half of his career of fighting nobodys. Who is canelo gona fight next if not ggg or what about after ggg? Boxing is a joke with its 100s of weight classes and 100s of belts for each weight class. Its a joke how many weightclasses and belts there are in boxing. Boxing is more promotion and negotiation than fighting. Whats there to negotiate? If u really wanna foght the guy it will happen but none of these boxers are fighters there are all puppets to their promoters, kinda sad

It is not boxing that is dying, but the fighters within it. Boxing contained amazing athletes. Fighters like Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Mike Tyson, Sugar Ray Leonard, Jake Lamotta, Sugar Ray Robinson, Rocky Marciano, Jack Dempsey, etc. Boxing has huge potential to come back. It just needs fighters who fight and show heart, like the men I just listed.

Don Frye was also an undefeated professional boxer & was drunk. Not that it matters, people stepped in before the fight was resolved. What we do know is Sonny was unwilling to take a pay day to fight him sober. James Toney already showed what happens when a high ranking boxer encounters an elite grappler. Same with Gene Lebell vs Milo Savage or John L Sullivan (then HW boxing champion) vs William Muldoon. If Don Frye is an MMA legend then they are all boxing legends too.

Something Sylvia has in common with James Toney is they both got their ass kicked by a senior citizen who had to move up in weight to fight both of em. Ray Mercer got choked out by a street fighter with zero combative sports experience. Sylvia just felt bad for Mercer, that's why he agreed to fight him in his comfort zone. Probably didn't expect a fight after seeing how easily Remy Bonjasky dismantled him.

Boxing techniques fall apart when kicks elbows, knees, sweeps & grabbing while striking are applied. Couture getting front kicked by Machida as well as Belfort, Evans destroyed by Machida's kicks & basic karate counter punch, Nate Diaz by GSP's sweeps, Nick Diaz by Henderson's kicks. So much of boxing doesn't work when those techniques are allowed.

Even with the exposures from Fuel, Fox, etc....the major fights have still either hardly improved or even failed to meet viewership expectations at times. Now this of course could be due to the unusually big constant training injuries that have put off fights, but still.

Like i said the circumstances of the fight and the condition of both fighters cannot be used as a reference. My point of it not being a true street fight is that in a true street fight it should have been one on one, with no one breaking in and resetting the fight. In a cage Frye would have won via TKO because no one would have interfered in the middle of the fight. In a fight anyone can get caught, Lesnar, GSP, JDS, Silva all got caught, that doesn't mean their opponents are better fighters!
