Even though Jeff Gordon is my all time favorite nascar driver, Dale Earnhardt was and and still is what the true embodiment of nascar is. One of the biggest reasons why people love him is because he was the hero for the everyday man.

I remember hearing the news, it took my breath away. I can only imagine the shock felt in the US, because I am from Finland and I was absolutely stunned. I would like to thank Dale for all the exciting moments on track and for the racing memories.

My grandfather was a huge dale earnhardt fan and was at Daytona the day he died. He always said that after the Daytona 500 the streets of Daytona would be flooded, but that night there wasn’t a soul in the streets, it was dead silent. I wasn’t there, but it was sure felt up here in KY too

Tears STILL run down when I watch anything on Dale...........I’m 63.

I had this on VHS when I was 4 years old and always loved watching it cause I was very hungry for informative stuff as a child, especially when it came to NASCAR which I loved then and now more than just about anything. It got lost over the years and I've been hoping one day I'd find it on KZread some how. And I finally did! Thank you so much!

I still wish they finished 1-2-3 😪. Both Dale and Dale Jr did everything they could for Michael, but it was Dale who did most of the blocking for them. It almost seemed like he believed that Michael or Dale Jr had more to benefit from winning the 2001 Daytona 500 than he did. He had already won his Daytona 500 in 1998, so he wanted for either driver to enjoy that experience. Unfortunately, we will never actually know what he was thinking.

Eighteen years after the death of Dale Earnhardt, re-watching this show was very interesting to me. I liked the section of the show that focused on soft-wall technology, but one thing was glaringly missing from the telecast. The HANS device was not even mentioned. I did a little research on the HANS device and found out that the device was marketed around 1990. It started to get some traction around 1994 and was made optional by the NHRA in 1996. Also in 1996, Mercedes carried out research on the HANS device for F1 and declared it superior to the head and neck safety systems being developed in F1. NASCAR of course turned a deaf ear to the HANS device. According to the HANS Wikipedia article, no less than 8 NASCAR drivers had been killed since 1984 due to basilar skull fractures. I read a response in some forum written by an EMS paramedic. He described death in a motor vehicle by a basilar skull fracture as particularly gruesome. The fracture severs all of the main blood vessels going to and from the head, causing severe bleeding that comes out of every orifice in the head (mouth, nose, ears and even eyes). The victim quickly passes out due to lack of blood and dies shortly thereafter. Remember when Ken Schrader got out of his car to check on Dale? He began waving frantically for EMS to hurry to Dale's aid. To this day, Schrader has never publicly commented on what he saw, but I believe, given the basilar skull fracture description above, he saw a terrible sight. Only 8 months after Earnhardt's death, NASCAR mandated use of the HANS device. Why wasn't this done prior to 2001? Adam Petty was killed in similar manner early in 2000 and nothing was done, Kenny Irwin, Jr. died the same way later the same year. Again, NASCAR did nothing. The big question is why did Dale Earnhardt have to die before NASCAR took action? The number of drivers killed in the NASCAR Cup series since 2001 - ZERO.

My favorite memory of Dale Earnhardt was Sonoma, California in 1995 when Mark Martin slipped in some oil and Earnhardt win his only road course. Second memory , the 1995 Brickyard 500.

Doyle.. Watch the original broadcast footage.. (Which is available on here btw) there was absolutely an on car camera. The only day it was rver shown was during replays directly after the race, before the severity of the crash was even thought about.. The footage is on KZread and easy to,find. Even tho it was only shown once

I'm glad that Michael and Dale Jr stood up for Sterling. There's people who will look to fix blame on a specific person in the wake of any tragedy. In this situation, blame was placed at the wrong person here. It's the last lap of the Daytona 500.

@@ccx806 they were already working on them. Same with the hans device already existed. I dont really know of any specific thing that was made or implemented because of him. It just sped up the process. NASCAR was already trying to figure it out as adam and kenny both died the year before. they knew they had safety issues, but their biggest star dying really sped that up a lot. They poured a lot more money into it than they probably would have had he not died.

@@anthonykernich1035From what I have gathered, the skull fracture happened not because of whiplash. It happened because his belts broke and he got sent face first into the steering wheel at 165mph. I can only imagine the condition Dale was in when Schrader looked in the car. His autopsy is brutal. Even his ankles were broken.

Nascar die in turn 4 at Daytona with Dale Earnhardt. That car was at the university of Nebraska they have the or 1 of the best testing rcr donated a couple of cup cars and at 40 mph they turned that car on its side it had all the breaks and marks and they did to a reg monty carlo off the show room and wrecked it it had the same breaks that dales race car had you can find it go by Nebraska university takes a look at dales car i know i know a guy that was schooled on that car they show pictures of the car and they show a dummys they put in the car and at 40 mph they show what happens it like 2 hrs long that where that no 3 car went to university of Nebraska and the went threw that car by every inch like i said they wrecked a couple of vars they set every thing like what dale was sitting it very interesting how they wreck it at 40 or 45 mph and its had the same marks that happen at Daytona show his head hitting the stering wheel look it up maybe you will learn something then what got me they hooked a dummy inside the car and put the hans device on the dummy and full face helmet yes he would have been alive today

There is another camera view of the crash, it was behind the driver's seat, I don't know where it is, but it shows the top of his helmet and after the crash, you can see where his helmet is titled to the side, and I know from seeing a family member pass away in front of me, showed once he hit the wall, he died instantly.

You’re very wrong. There’s is no camera in car. FOX wanted Earnhardt to have one of the several in car cameras for the race but Earnhardt declined. Thankfully that was a great choice considering what happened. No clue what we would of saw if he did have the camera...

I apologize, it was a very difficult time for myself back then to see that sort of thing happen to Dale. That day was a blur, I don't really remember much all I remember was being very depressed to the point of skipping school the next day. That footage may have been for a different crash.
